I’m so glad I knew about fat Thor before watching Endgame. Otherwise I would have probably been triggered.

I saw Endgame today. It was a great movie with great moments. (Everybody coming back, while the whole theatre cheered was among the highlights).

However one thing that made the movie outing unpleasant was the treatment Thor and his new look received. I’m going to assume you’re familiar with the MCU, so I won’t take long but to summarize; Thor has lost his home and a lot of his people. He saw Thanos murder Loki and Heimdall. He’s still grieving the loss of his mother, Frigga. In short, he’s in mourning.

So he’s turned to alcoholism. He’s gained a “beer belly” and his hair and beard are long and unkempt.

Here’s where it gets fucked. We’re expected to laugh when his fatness is finally revealed. That’s the literally the joke. His fat belly. Oh how funny, he doesn’t have a ripped bod anymore. I mean they didn’t hint at his new body in any of the promotions or trailers. His belly was the big reveal. Hilarious.

Ok, but you do realize why that is fucked, right? I shouldn’t have to explain it, right?

Hearing a theater full of people laugh at Thor when he explicitly says he’s having a panic attack hurts.

He’s in pain; grieving for his family, friends and home. Excuse me if he stopped working out and just “let himself go”. Go fuck yourself if you think that was remotely funny.

I liked Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal. I loved that he was still worthy of Mjolnir and suited up as a fat person. I love that he didn’t magically slim down and buff up for the final battle. I hope (although I highly doubt) they keep Fat Thor.

I’m so tired of being the butt of the joke. Lol he’s fat and depressed. It’s funny! Lol

When you laugh at depressed Thor, you’re laughing at me and people like me. When you laugh at his drunkness, you’re laughing at a serious disease. (Yes, alcoholism is a disease.) When you laugh your head off when they reveal his new belly you’re laughing at the physical manifestation of his pain.

The other Avengers were just horrible. Rocket was more insufferable than usual. Rhodey was just an ass. (Haha cheese whiz is coursing through Thor’s veins ’cause he’s a fatty)

When Thor was talking about getting the Reality stone back; yes he was drunk but rather than fucking address that and say “hey let’s get you some help”, they want to rush him off “the stage” as it were. They want to make him stop talking because he’s maybe ruining the mood or making everybody uncomfortable.

They didn’t want to deal with Thor being sick. So they either ignored it or made jokes.

He sees his mom, who he is also fucking grieving, (which is why he’s looking the way he is) and he finally gets some sort of closure in that regard only to have it ruined by “eat a salad” Yeah. I see my dead mother and that’s what I wanna hear. Sure.

And to add what a friend of mine pointed out; they send him back in time to the home he lost (the loss which is fueling his current state) with fucking Rocket. You know because Rabbit Rocket is so sensitive.

Fat Thor isn’t the problem. They had an opportunity to say something meaningful about mental illness and grief. But no. They took the easy way out and made a joke. And in the process hurt a lot of fans who otherwise love the franchise.

The A shouldn’t stand for “ableism”
