Sunday Link Roundup

  1. From Identities.Mic comes an article about sex related myths and lies that need to stop being taught to girls.
  • No, not all women are born with vaginas,
  • no matter what is bought for you, you do not owe sexual favors to anyone,
  • sexual harassment is not commonplace,
  • women are not responsible for men cheating (men are)

  1. Iowa Republican Steve King-the same smugnoramus (a portmanteau of smug and ignorant)  who declared that the female body has a way of shutting down pregnancy from rape-claims that the Ferguson Police Department didn’t engage in racial profiling. His reason bears no resemblance to what we on Earth call logic.
  2. Stereotypes of masculinity are confusing.  Hey people?!  Communicate with your partner(s).

  3. The militarization of the US police has been going on for some time and far too many people have been ignoring it.

  4. More examples that racism still exists. The numerous examples are found in the responses to the Tweet.

  5. New Jersey school officials will not let a transgender girl return to school.  They tell her she must use the name on her birth certificate.  So much for schools fostering an environment conducive to children learning.

  6.  Comic Book Resources has a regular column written by Brian Cronin entitled ‘Things That Turned Bad’.

In this column, I will spotlight plotlines by writers that probably weren’t a good idea at the time and have only become more problematic in retrospect. I’ll try to stick with stuff that’s more ill-conceived than flat-out offensive (like racist stereotypes of characters during the 1940s).

Today, based on a suggestion from reader Tony (although my pal Michael also mentioned it to me awhile back), we look at one of the most disturbing Superboy stories of all-time. You can’t truly prepare yourself for the messed-up stuff that happened in 1977′s DC Super Stars #12 by writer Cary Bates and artists Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson, but you should at least attempt to ready yourself for what you’re about to see.

He is not kidding when he says you won’t be prepared for what you’ll see.  If you click the link, be warned.  It may be triggering (content note: contains images and discussion of violation of autonomy, rape, ambivalence by Superboy himself about someone else being violated, and women being treated as vehicles to tell others’ stories).

  1. Congress is going to review the transfer of military weapons in the wake of the events in Ferguson, MO.  It’s about time.  The militarization of police forces in the US has been going on for years, and largely going under the radar.  The police are not supposed to function as an army.
  2.  The fraternity of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has offered to pay the full funeral costs for Michael Brown.

  1. A heartbreaking image.
