Oh noez! Conservative Americans are losing their rights!

Conservative Christian business owner Brian Klawiter (pictured above) is irate.

He’s not angry about the horrific levels of gun violence in the U.S. or wealth inequality. He’s not worried about Congress being incapable of doing their job or the President ordering drone strikes in other countries. Nor is he worried about cuts to government assistance programs that keep millions of citizens afloat or ongoing efforts to erode the rights of women to exercise control over their reproductive anatomy.

The Grandville, Michigan owner of Dieseltec (an automotive repair company) is also not mad about the country’s dependency on fossil fuels, the threat of climate change, the erosion of the separation of church and state, soaring college tuition costs, crumbling infrastructure, the school-to-prison pipeline, Rape Culture, Citizens United, or the Patriot Act.

No, Klawiter is mad about more important things, and recently posted a rambling tirade on Facebook. In his message, he whines about how the rights of conservative USAmericans are being squashed:

His whiny, barely coherent rant is like something straight out of FOX “News”. There’s so much I could say about this, but I think this response from bankruptcy attorney Jeffrey Maples is a far more amusing and eloquent reply than anything I could manage:

DEAR DIESELTEC:

This evening I was reading the news online and came across this story about Dieseltec, a local business that posted a message on their Facebook site proclaiming that homosexuals were not welcome and would be refused service. Our slogan is “Helping Good People through Bad Times” (for this let’s just say “Helping People through Bad Times” ) and boy oh boy Dieseltec, you are in for some bad times and will need my help. So here is my open letter to Dieseltec.

Dear Dieseltec:

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Jeffrey Mapes, and I specialize in bankruptcy law — helping individuals and corporations when things go wrong. I noticed your post on Facebook where you decided to alienate most of the general public by stating that you will refuse service to openly homosexual people. This is certainly an unorthodox business strategy, and perhaps it will work for you, but I get the feeling you will need a bankruptcy attorney pretty soon and I wanted to offer my services. Like you, I am white, male, Christian, a business owner, and a gun owner. Unlike you, I provide services to everyone regardless of their sexual orientation because it doesn’t matter to me — I hope this won’t be a deal breaker for you.

If that upsets you, let me tell you a little bit more about our office to try and persuade you, The first thing you will notice is how friendly and compassionate the office staff is. Despite your inane, incoherent and just plain dumb comments, we know that everyone makes mistakes and we want to help you overcome them. They will also be more than willing to help you with some basic grammar that you seem to struggle with.

If you still need more convincing, let me assure you that we will make certain that your bankruptcy petition is filed correctly and there are no errors. You stated in your post that you would incorrectly assemble a vehicle in order to prove a point. I want to let you know that despite the fact that I would love to prove a point to you about tolerance, I won’t compromise my standards of quality to do so. After all, I have to look in the mirror at the end of the day and if I didn’t do my best for everyone, I would have trouble sleeping. Perhaps you could give me pointers on how you sleep at night?

Just a few other housekeeping items. While I certainly don’t encourage people to bring guns into my office, so long as you have the proper permit and handle it responsibly, you can bring your gun along. I would only ask that you refrain from menacingly stroking your weapon while you quietly sing David Allen Coe songs to yourself. I also think you have a deep and fundamental misunderstanding of the first amendment and how it works, but that is a long discussion and we should save that for when we meet in person.

Well Dieseltec, I hope I’ve convinced you that Mapes Law Offices is the right place for you to file your bankruptcy. I would like to leave you with some words of inspiration from the dramatic film Billy Madison and I hope that you will take them to heart:

“What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”

Sincerely,

Jeffrey D. Mapes

Priceless!

Klawiter says that as a result of posting his screed, he has received threats to himself, his family, and his business.

Criticize his ideas.

Mock him.

Shun him.

Boycott his business if you choose.

But do not threaten the man or his family.

Neither violence nor the threat of violence should be used in the pursuit of equality.

Oh noez! Conservative Americans are losing their rights!

Empowering youth through skateboarding

No child should have to spend her days begging or working the streets to support her low-income family. Nor should he be denied access to education. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what Australian Oliver Percovich discovered in 2007 when he took to the streets of Kabul, Afghanistan on his skateboard. Surrounded by poverty-stricken children captivated by his skateboarding skills, Percovich was inspired to empower the lives of children in countries ravaged by war. To make this goal a reality, he created Skateistan, a non-political, inclusive NGO that uses skateboarding as a tool to empower* youth.

As soon as Australian skateboarder Oliver Percovich dropped his board in Kabul in 2007, he was surrounded by the eager faces of children of all ages who wanted to be shown how to skate. Stretching out the three boards he and a former girlfriend/aidworker had brought with them, “Ollie” began dedicating himself to the creation of a small non-profit skate school in Afghanistan.

A group of Afghan friends (aged 18-22) who were naturals at skateboarding shared the three boards and quickly progressed in their new favourite sport—and so skateboarding hit Afghanistan. The success with the first students prompted Ollie to think bigger: by bringing more boards back to Kabul and establishing an indoor skateboarding venue, the program would be able to teach many more youth, and also be able to provide older girls with a private facility to continue skateboarding.

On October 29, 2009, Skateistan completed construction of an all-inclusive skatepark and educational facility on 5428 square meters of land donated by the Afghan National Olympic Committee. The indoor skatepark was graciously built by IOU Ramps.

Skateistan has emerged as Afghanistan’s first skateboarding school, and is dedicated to teaching both male and female students. The non-profit skateboarding charity has constructed the two largest indoor sport facilities in Afghanistan, and hosts the largest female sporting organization (composed of female skateboarders). Skateistan believes that when youth come together to skateboard and play, they forge bonds that transcend social barriers. Furthermore, through creative education classes the youth are enabled to explore issues that are important to them.

For those still wondering how skateboarding can lead to youth empowerment:

Youth come for skateboarding, and stay for education. This program offers regular, structured weekly skateboarding instruction alongside an educational arts-based curriculum. In the skate park, children of all backgrounds find a valuable platform for self-expression, creativity, goal setting and personal development. In the classroom, students use fine arts and multimedia to explore geography, world cultures, history, human rights, environmental studies, hygiene, storytelling and more. Lessons focus on giving youth tools to express themselves, think critically and solve problems in their local and global communities. Special community events and international multimedia and art exchanges with peers around the globe expand the students’ personal worlds. Accessible to all levels of literacy and education, classes provide a forum for youth to develop friendships that overcome deep social barriers.

All of that sounded nice, but as I continued reading, I wanted specific examples. What exactly are children learning? What specific skills are they being taught? In what ways are they expressing themselves creatively? I needn’t have worried. There are numerous examples, including a 10-week nutrition and hygiene course:

In September, after several months of attending weekly skateboarding classes alongside taking part in various art projects, students at Skateistan Mazar began their first complete semester unit.  Alongside their peers in Phnom Penh and Kabul, students in Mazar will be focusing the next several months on nutrition and sanitation.

The 10-week curriculum covers food-related topics from across the board, ranging from food groups to planting seeds, hand washing to the history of food. After each weekly one-hour skateboarding session, students then come to the classroom to participate in interactive lessons that teach them about good nutrition, health, food safety, sanitation, and more.

After learning about germs, how they spread, and how to prevent food contamination, students spent two weeks learning about food groups, the components of a healthy meal, and how various local foods benefit their bodies. Once students developed an understanding of healthy food, the time came to grow their own.  The students learned about what plants need in order to grow, and set about imagining, drawing, and planning their dream garden. Everyone then got a chance to plant their own seed.  The seedlings are just now sprouting, and in several weeks, they will be big enough to be transplanted to a larger recycled-container garden of the students’ design.

A woodworking course for Afghan students:

Among the traditional Afghan arts, wood carving has its own place. The students at Skateistan believe that a nation stays alive if their culture is alive. Therefore, in this semester the students worked on wood carving as a way of sustaining some of their Afghan culture. The technique used was to draw a design on plywood and then cut it out with a special saw. The design which has been cut out is then glued onto another piece of plywood and coloured to add more detail.

Their carvings include Afghan famous figures such as Ahmad Shah Durani, the first Emir of Afghanistan, skateboarding, landscapes, and birds.

At first the students found it difficult to cut out the designs, however because of their keen interest in the craft, they gradually made some impressive carvings. One of our curriculum goals is to help these children discover their own identity through the creative process. By allowing the students to produce artworks, they are given the opportunity to understand their individual differences and talents.

And lessons in world geography and regional history:

After finishing the 11th semester on colours, Skateistan Kabul started the new semester on mapping. This semester included different activities, games, fun, online learning, drawing, spray painting the walls of Skateistan, and many more things that we can’t say in one or two pages.

During the first six weeks of the mapping semester, the students were introduced to the power of maps and mapping by studying a globe and a map of the world. The students studied all the elements that make up a world map – understanding the many oceans, defining country borders, identifying how many countries exist in the world, and how many famous mountains and rivers are in the world.  The students were also shown pictures of the world’s nicest and most famous places.

Then came the map of Afghanistan, where the students learned the history and geography of their country. Did you know that Afghanistan has existed for five thousand years?

[…]

The students also learned about the minerals, rivers, and mountains of Afghanistan, its nicest places, and most famous royalty. Then, the students were allowed to paint a map of Afghanistan on the wall of Skateistan with spray paint!

[…]

After that, the students studied a map of Kabul. They learned about directions, and how they can find a place in Kabul even if they don not know anything about it. The activities were fun and involved many games, in one the students went into pairs and would ask one and other how to travel to and from locations across the city, “How can I get to Skateistan from Shahr-e-Naw?”. Using the map of Kabul the students would then give detailed directions allowing the other to arrive safely at their desired location.  The students then looked at Google maps online, which enabled them to see Kabul from a birds eye view. From this viewpoint they made personalised street maps of their city and even painted Skateistan from above!

Afterwards, the students made map legends out of paper, cartons and sticks. The legends included different symbols for schools, rivers, mountains, streets, safe and unsafe places, mosques, and more.  The symbols were then pressed onto boards.  During the activity, the students learned about which places are more secure for walking and playing, and which places are unsafe, and also how to decide which route is the most secure to get to a destination.

These examples demonstrate that in addition to being a nice idea with a great hook, Skateistan is an organization that lives up to its mission statement.

I hope Aydian Dowling wins the ‘Ultimate Guy’ contest

Fitness magazine Men’s Health recently began this year’s ‘Ultimate Guy contest. They’re looking for an active, well-rounded, health-conscious, and thoughtful man to appear on the cover of their November 2015 issue. Aydian Dowling (the sexy guy pictured above) is currently in the lead with slightly more than 20,000 votes, which is more than two and half times the number of votes for the guy in second place. Dowling stands out from his competitors though. He is an out and proud trans man:

Dowling has skyrocketed to the top of the leaderboard with the help of the trans community and allies turning to social media to bring awareness to Dowling’s efforts. A Tumblr post calling for votes has racked up over 100,000 notes, and tweets supporting Dowling keep pouring in.

“It’s been crazy and amazing. I definitely was not expecting all the support, but I’m so happy and proud of the community for using its loud voice and realizing that we really could do it,” Dowling toldThe Daily Beast. “We’re banding together and this is us. We exist and we should be represented in some way in mainstream.”

The magazine’s “Ultimate Guy Search” is looking for the guy who best fits the ideals of Men’s Health: being physically fit, living a healthy lifestyle, giving back, and professional success.

Guys hoping to be the face of the magazine for a month answer four questions pertaining to the Men’s Health mantra and upload a couple of pics. There are judges, but there’s also a “reader’s choice” component to the competition.

Last year the Men’s Health crowned Noah Galloway, a soldier who lost his left arm and leg after an IED went off. This year, Dowling may be the first trans man on the cover of Men’s Health (or a mainstream magazine in general), redefining and expanding what it means to be a man.

“It would be so affirming to just know that the man that I set out to be is somebody that people think is a good man,” Dowling says about possibly being on the cover of Men’s Health. “To break those stereotypes, but still be a man. Feel pride in masculinity, but not putting down femininity. That would be so important to me.”

As you can see from that Tumblr page, many people are rooting for Dowling to win (the post has more than 149K notes). I’m one of those people (just voted in fact). Why? For one thing, I think he deserves it. Just as important though, such a win can help chip away at the stereotypes and myths about trans people held by far too many folks. So if you support transgender equality-and you damn well should-head on over to Men’s Health and vote for Aydian Dowling.

Swedish musician Robyn is hosting Tekla, a one-day festival aimed at girls 11 to 18 with an interest in tech. The festival will include workshops on game development, electronic music, programming, and more. As a bonus for visitors, the singer will also perform at the festival, which will be held April 18:

The festival is being thrown in partnership with the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, which awarded Robyn its Great Prize in 2013. Recipients are required to hold a seminar at the university, but Robyn is instead choosing to throw this day-long event. “I thought of KTH’s motto, ‘science and art’, and wanted to do something to inspire girls who are curious about technology, while at the same time highlighting that too few women are applying to KTH programs,” Robyn says. KTH says that only about 34 percent of its new students are women. Google, Spotify, and other tech firms are partnering for the event. It’ll be held April 18th. It’s not stated whether the event will recur in the future.

Tech isn’t the area you’d expect to see Robyn working in, but KTH still views her as an important figure in the industry because of what it calls her use of “new technology in IT, audio, and video in innovative and exciting ways.” And throwing an event like Tekla is important. An interest in these subjects too often isn’t fostered in girls throughout school, and introducing it to them through a dedicated festival could help to change that — even if it starts with a small number of people.

Taylor Swift makes it onto Forbes’ list of the “World’s greatest leaders”

Taylor Swift didn’t become the highest-paid woman in the music business by accident. Pop’s savviest star has crossed swords with Spotify, embraced corporate sponsorship, and moved to secure dozens of trademarks (including phrases like “This sick beat”)—plus she has proved shrewder at honing a brand in the social media age than virtually any other person or company. And she’s done it without resorting to dumbed-down salacious gimmickry. (Swift, ahem, is arguably the anti–Miley Cyrus.) With 1989, the top-selling album in 2014, Swift’s efforts to ensure she gets paid for her music could have a huge ripple effect on the way artists are compensated in an era of free streaming.

No slight against Swift, but I fail to see how any of the above justifies her placement on a list of the world’s greatest leaders.

UK audiences tell broadcasters: “we want more real and older women on tv”

There needs to be more “normal” and older women on the news and the radio, according to a new survey commissioned by the BBC.

The findings of the Blurred Lines: Contemporary Attitudes to Gender Portrayal in the Media revealed that viewers believe that news and radio lacked high profile names compared to other areas.

The corporation’s detailed and wide-ranging study also revealed that well-known presenters like Clare Balding and Gabby Logan are improving sports coverage. Comedy, too, was getting a boost from female stars like Miranda Hart and Sarah Millican.

The survey found that people want less scantily clad women on reality television shows as well and that audiences did not think that they were good representations of real people.

Interestingly, the study also showed that audience perception of gender balance is better than the reality, with two men to every one woman.

Walmart refuses to sell Ronda Rousey’s book in stores

Walk into just about any Wal-Mart and you’ll find a whole section filled with  MMA gear and accessories. You’ll have a harder time, however, finding UFC champion Ronda Rousey’s new memoir, “My Fight/Your Fight.” The store confirmed to Jezebel this week that it will not display the title on its in-store shelves, but instead only offer customers the opportunity to purchase the tome online.

Why? ESPN and the New York Post both reported last week the content was considered “too violent” for the store, which displays and sells copies of “American Sniper,” “Walking Dead” graphic novels and, oh yeah, shot guns. This is just the story of an Olympic athlete’s life and career. What could possibly be so offensive?

Of note in this story-ESPN, NY Post, and the Washington Post all fail to cite their source for the claim that “Walmart deems the content of the book (or Rousey herself) too violent”. A Walmart spokesperson refutes this assertion in a Jezebel article:

Walmart spokesperson Danit Marquadt tells us that’s not correct, that Walmart has been “preparing for the release” of Rousey’s book since September 2014, and that they’re pre-selling it online now. (That’s true: it’s right here.) She told TMZ virtually the same thing.

“When the book is officially released on May 12, customers interested in purchasing it can use the ‘site to store’ feature and pick it up at a local store, “ Marquadt added.

I asked if the book’s content had anything to do with Walmart’s decision to sell this book in this way. Marquadt responded: “There’s a variety of factors that we look at when determining what items to offer our customers. At this point we’ve chosen to offer this particular title to our customers online. We’ll continue to watch how customers respond.” She added that Walmart’s website sells millions of items versus the 150,000 sold in an average Walmart Supercenter.

I asked again if the book’s content was one of those deciding factors; at this point, Marquadt could presumably have said “No,” or “I don’t know” or “We’re saving space for more in-demand titles” or something. Instead, she told me: “I’ve shared with you what I have to share. In terms of the factors that we look at, there are a lot of different factors that we look at when determining what items to offer our customers.” This information—and not one iota more—was all repeated in an email that she sent to me after we hung up.

I wonder what those factors are and if sexism played a role in Walmart’s decision.

Last year, a 9-year-old Massachusetts girl emailed President Obama to inquire about the absence of women on paper currency in the U.S. Back in February, she received a response from the President:

“I think there should be more woman on a dollar/coin for the United States because if there were no woman there wouldn’t be men,” she wrote, adding that there are many women that deserve to be featured on U.S. currency because of the “important things” they’ve done.

Included on her list of suggestions were Rosa Parks, Betsy Ross, Abigail Adams and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Sofia told Time she “sort of forgot about” her letter when months passed without any response from the president. But in February, she received a letter from the White House.

“This is a belated note to thank you for writing to me with such a good idea last summer. The women you listed and drew make up an impressive group, and I must say you’re pretty impressive too,” the president wrote, according to a copy of the letter obtained by Time.

“I’ll keep working to make sure you grow up in a country where women have the same opportunities as men, and I hope you’ll stay involved in issues that matter to you,” Obama wrote.

Sofia might be happy to know that the online campaign Women on 20s shares her concerns. The non-profit campaign aims to get a woman’s face on the $20 bill by 2020.

Women On 20s, with your help, aims to compel historic change by convincing President Obama that NOW is the time to put a woman’s face on our paper currency. With over 256,000 voters casting ballots over the last 5 weeks, Americans have chosen which of the 15 inspiring American women heroes will go on to the Final Round of voting. And now we reveal that Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks are the people’s choice and will advance to the final ballot for your consideration. In addition, Cherokee Chief Wilma Mankiller has been added to the final ballot by popular demand in order to include a choice of a Native American to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.

Susan Sarandon is also excited about this campaign. Writing for The Daily Beast, the actress says:

A few weeks ago, I came across a short video entitled, “Where Are the Girls on the Money?” on the website womenon20s.org. Women on 20s is an online campaign to put a woman’s face on the $20 bill. I was excited to see that there was a positive mission afoot to bring attention to some of the greatest women in American history.

As the Women on 20s website points out, “the year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment that granted women the right to vote. So it seems fitting to commemorate that milestone by voting to elevate women to a place that is today reserved exclusively for the men who shaped American history. That place is on our paper money and that new portrait can become a symbol of greater changes to come.”

I liked how it was reframing the conversation about gender equality in a whole new way and decided to post a photo on social media that championed the cause and urged others to vote for one of the 15 incredible candidates on the Women on 20s website.

As Sarandon notes in her article, Turkey, Mexico, the Phillipines, and Syria are among several countries that recognize female leaders on their paper currency. Why is the “world’s greatest country” lagging behind in this respect?

It was the only way out

For many supporters of a woman’s right to an abortion, the issue is not “are fetuses sacred” or “do fetuses have a right to life”. Rather, it is about a woman having the right to decide whether or not she wants to continue her pregnancy. Her body, her choice. Bodily autonomy, in other words. The vast majority of stories I’ve read about abortion rights involve attempts by anti-abortion advocates (many of whom are men-though not all) to rob women of their right to make decisions about their bodies (yes, I’m aware they don’t view abortion in this way, but they ought to and this is one of the reasons their position is fucking awful). This is usually accomplished through legislation in the form of onerous and medically unnecessary requirements for abortion providers, fetal personhood laws, mandatory ultrasounds (aka rape by the state), ridiculous 48 or 72 hour waiting periods, parental consent laws, or laws aimed at making late-term abortions illegal. Until recently, I’d never heard of anyone violating the bodily autonomy of a pregnant woman by forcing her to have an abortion. But that’s exactly what one man in Norway recently did:

A man who induced his ex-girlfriend’s miscarriage in her twelfth week of pregnancy by tricking her into taking abortion pills he had slipped into a smoothie, claims his actions were “the only way out”.

Prosecutors are vying for a seven year sentence for the 26-year-old man, who has pleaded guilty to both inflicting serious bodily harm and terminating a pregnancy without the mother’s consent at a court in Trondheim, Norway.

The man told the court that he “had a bad conscience and felt remorse” over his actions but that he believed it was “the only way out”, the Norwegian broadcaster NRK reports.

“The only way out”? That’s B.S.

If this guy didn’t want to be a father, he should not have had unprotected sex. Surely he is aware of the existence of condoms?! Barring the use of a rubber, what about a vasectomy? Some men choose that route so they don’t have to worry about getting their partner pregnant. He had other ways out, but chose not to exercise proper judgment. Instead, he opted to violate his ex-girlfriend’s bodily autonomy by forcing her to have an abortion against her will.

“He had tried several times to convince me to have an abortion but it was not an option for me,” the 20-year-old woman told the court.

Lacing the smoothie with abortion pills was the man’s second attempt to make is ex-girlfriend lose the child, The Local reports.

The man had purchased the pills over the internet and attempted to induce a miscarriage early on in the pregnancy by telling the woman they were painkillers.

When this did not result in a miscarriage, the man purchased a second batch of pills, claiming he was concerned after reading online that an unsuccessful abortion attempt could lead to a child being born with deformities.

After the woman drank the smoothie she experienced severe abdominal pain and later miscarried.

It was discovered by the woman’s doctor that her miscarriage had been induced by a high dose of abortion medicine.

The man told the court he felt “like a total shitbag” when the severity of his actions dawned on him.

Dude, you aren’t “like a total shitbag”. You ARE a shitbag.

It was the only way out

Charges against ‘Catholic Warrior’ dropped because she’s a Christian

Back in December, Susan Hemeryck walked into the state capitol Christmas display area, pre-apologized to two Florida Department of Law Enforcement Capitol Police officers, and then proceeded to vandalize a display erected by the Satanic Temple featuring the angel Lucifer being cast down from the heavens into hell.

But Hemeryck, like most intolerant conservative “Christians,” couldn’t handle the biblically-correct scene so she actively sought to destroy it. However, even though she is caught on camera handling the display, was caught red-handed by law enforcement officers, and freely admitted to the Associated Press that she “yanked that little devil off the fishing line” and “should have just done a better job and finished it off for good,” state prosecutors decided not to pursue the case.

As part of her defense, Hemeryck’s attorney accused the state of “basically putting an attack on Christians,” and prosecutors apparently backed down afterwards. Their lame excuse? Lack of evidence.

“The defendant is simply carrying the display,” prosecutors said in a statement. “No damages are apparent — it is simply disassembled.”

Yeah, tell that to the the Satanic Temple and all of the organizations and people who fought so hard to place the display on state grounds to symbolize true freedom of religion and religious tolerance.

I bet if a Muslim did the same thing, prosecutors would pursue the case. But since it’s a Christian, and they’re all so good and wholesome, she gets let off the hook.

Hmmm, is there a commandment about not vandalizing?

Thanks to ‘religious and cultural reasons’, primary school students in London banned from watching solar eclipse

According to The Telegraph, students at North Primary School were only able to observe the rare eclipse from inside the school, watching it on video screens.

Located in area known as “Little India,” the community is considered diverse, but with a large a large Hindi population.

Headteacher Ivor Johnstone said the decision to bring the children inside was based on “religious and cultural” reasons

“The school made this decision when we became aware of religious and cultural concerns associated with observing an eclipse directly,” he explained. “Although we are sorry for any disappointment, pupils were still able to watch the eclipse on screens in classrooms.”

What about the students who aren’t Hindu? Are there any other Hindu rules and strictures they have to follow?

Some Hindu scriptures state that an eclipse makes believers impure, with fundamentalists saying believers must bathe immediately after an eclipse and chant the name of God to overcome the forces of darkness.

Hogwash. Like astrology, the position of the stars and planets doesn’t affect our psyche. And like astrology, there is no evidence to support such nonsense. No flavor of theist should be able to dictate to others what they can and cannot do, nor should they have any influence over anyone other than their followers. Don’t want to see an eclipse? Take your child out of school that day. Hell, I wish it was more than that. I wish theists had to offer evidence for their beliefs–most especially when they directly impact children.

Also, I have to laugh at the idea that it’s not ok to directly observe an eclipse, but viewing it indirectly is a-ok.

The series tells the tale of Sam Shepard, a happily out and newly married gay man whose life is changed forever after he is visited by an angel from heaven on his wedding night and is summoned to be the Hand of God on Earth.

Why was he chosen? How does his sexuality impact his role as a servant of the divine? And how does the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints react when it hears a gay man has been sent on a mission from the heavens? You’ll have to read the story to find out, but until then take a look at the eight-page preview below and then head over to the Stripling Warrior KickStarter page to lend your support to making comic book history.

Religious nonsense makes much more sense in a fictional comic book world than here in the real world.

Speaking of religious rubbish, Vatican officials apparently believe that supernatural beings walk among us:

“There are those who try to turn people into vampires and make them drink other people’s blood, or encourage them to have special sexual relations to obtain special powers,” said Professor Giuseppe Ferrari at the meeting in Rome, which heard that the number of such possessions is rising globally. “These groups are attracted by the so-called beautiful young vampires that we’ve seen so much of in recent years.”

Professor Ferrari, who heads an Italian occult watchdog, The Group on Research and Socio-Religious Information, said exorcisms should only be conducted by properly trained priests. Although the Vatican regards genuine demonic possession as rare, with many suspected cases proving to be people with mental illnesses, Pope Francis has urged dioceses to ensure that they follow Catholic law and have at least one trained exorcist each.

Swiss exorcist Father Cesare Truqui told The Independent that this week’s course, attended by exorcists, priests and lay people, was vital in order to raise awareness and hone priests’ skills. “The ministry of performing exorcism is little known among priests. It’s like training to be a journalist without knowing how to do an interview,” he said, noting that dioceses in Italy and beyond were experiencing a surge in reports of symptoms of “possession”.

I’ve heard some say that it is harmless to believe in demons or demonic possession. These people are ignorant of the cases where people have suffered or died as a result of being “treated” for their so-called possession. Here is the latest, tragic case:

Police in Texas  are searching for the parents who starved their “demon possessed” toddler to death before fleeing to Mexico following a failed resurrection. Acting on an anonymous tip that a two-year-old had died, and that the death had not been reported.

According to the tipster, a “rising ceremony” was held on March 22 to “attempt to resurrect Victim from the dead.” When that failed, the child was wrapped in a blanket and “taken back to Mexico,” for burial, according to a search warrant.

“We don’t know if this was to try and resurrect the spirit of he child and we don’t know if this was to try and resurrect the child themselves or what exactly that service or ceremony encompasses,” said Lt. Mark Maret.

The child died inside a Balch Springs home that functioned as Congregacional Pueblo De Dios, a church that was formed in 2007. The church is affiliated with Georgia-based Pentecostal denomination, the Hispanic Conference of the Congregational Holiness Church, according to NBC.

According to a woman who knew the boy’s mother, it was believed that the child was possessed by demons — and they attempted to starve the corruption out of the little boy, who was not fed in 25 days.

Video of the “rising ceremony” shows church secretary Aracely Meza babbling incoherently while praying for the toddler’s body, which she anoints with oils. Numerous congregants were present for the ritual, yet the crime was not reported until four days after the child’s death.

Meza breaks down crying when she fails to bring the little boy back to life with magic.

Detectives have thus far been unable to locate the child’s parents or other congregants who fled to Mexico to bury the abused and neglected child. However, Meza has been charged with injury to a child by omission.

A young boy is dead now thanks to his parents’ belief in superstitious nonsense.

As an atheist, I dislike religion for reasons just like this.

I’m a bad, bad person

I woke up today and found out that I’m a bad person. I’m just as bad a rapist or murderer. Granted, I’ve never raped anyone, nor have I ever murdered anyone. Nor do I have thoughts about raping or murdering anyone. I’m deeply opposed to violence (though I do think there are cases where the use of violence is justifiable, such as self-defense) and I respect the bodily autonomy of others.  So how am I like someone who exerts their power over others by having non-consensual sex with someone? How am I like someone who takes the life of another individual?

D’oh!

Now I get it.

You’ll have to forgive me, I just woke up. My brain is a little fuzzy. Now that I’m more alert, I realized how it is that I’m such a horrible person.

It’s because I’m gay!

At least according to Dr. Steven Hotze:

In audio recorded by the Texas Freedom Network, Dr. Steven Hotze,  head of Conservative Republicans of Texas, engaged in a back and forth with state Rep. Sylvester Turner (D), explaining how Texas should subvert the Supreme Court — should they approve same-sex marriage — the same way the state undermines the right to legal abortions.

Saying the state should only enforce laws that are “morally right,” Hotze explained how that determination is made, stating, “First you look in the Bible.”

“There are ways around the law. We have legalization — the Supreme Court, even though I believe it was completely wrong, said it is constitutional to kill a baby in the womb,” Hotze said. “I think it’s a horrible injustice and it’s unconstitutional. But, let me just say this, in Texas we said ‘We don’t believe that’s right. So we’re going to do everything we can to protect the unborn that we possibly can,’ and we’ve done that. And that’s the same thing.”

He added, “If they were to come out ruling that marriage between two individuals is legal, I would say let’s do to stop it just like we stopped abortion. Cut off funding for it, that’s all I’m saying.”

Told by Turner that he respects people no matter how they live their lives, Hotze claimed that sexual preferences  is a choice homosexuals make, just as murderers and rapists choose to commit “immoral acts.”

“If you make that a standard, that it’s a person’s chosen behavior, no matter what it is, it gives them minority status? You’ve got to be kidding. Where do you stop?’ Hotze said incredulously. “Look, if people are involved in activities that are immoral and wrong, you can love them, but you don’t respect what they do and you try and help them find a way out. Whether they’re alcoholics, whether they’re murderers or adulterers. Whether they’re perverts, pornographers or whatever. You want help them. Or homosexuals, you want to help them out.”

Turner again stated that people should be respected, no matter their differences, to which Hotze replied, “Then we can get rid of all the laws against people that do immoral acts, like murder and rape and embezzling. Cause you want to make them feel good, don’t you? You don’t want to make them feel bad about their actions because they might be born that way.”

Does he really see no distinction between rape or murder and embezzling, homosexuality, pornography, or adultery?  Or is this asshole just pandering to religious bigots? In the end, it doesn’t really matter if he believes that horseshit or not. What matters is the effect of his words, homophobia. Whether you believe your words or not, Dr. Hotze, you are a bigot.

I have a fondness for Godzilla (thanks dad). A huge fondness (seriously, thanks dad). Toho Pictures’ 1954 film depicts the awakening-via nuclear testing-of a prehistoric creature that subsequently ravages Japan. Gojira (or Godzilla, as he is typically referred to in USAmerica) is a suspenseful film that invokes the horrors of nuclear testing, and serves as an allegory for the deadly forces that might be unleashed when humans tamper with forces beyond their control. Despite the mixed to negative reviews the movie garnered in Japan, the film was financially successful and paved the way for a host of sequels. All told, Godzilla has appeared in 28 Toho Co., Ltd films, as well as several USAmerican ones (including Godzilla 1985 which was a heavily re-edited version of an earlier Japanese Godzilla movie; the 1998 Roland Emmerich-directed abomination of which the less said the better, and last year’s Godzilla movie from Legendary Pictures). In 2004, following the release of Godzilla: Final Wars, Toho Co.,Ltd decided to put the Godzilla franchise on hiatus for 10 years. The box office success of 2014’s Godzilla convinced Toho that it was time to dust off everyone’s favorite King of the Monsters:

“Neon Genesis Evangelion’s” Hideaki Anno and “Attack on Titan’s” Shinji Higuchi will co-direct “Godzilla 2016,” the first Japanese film in the long-running franchise in 12 years.

Anno will also write the film’s script, while Higuchi will oversee special effects. Anime News Network notes the two have been close friends for decades, and previously collaborated on Studio Ghibli’s live-action short “Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo.”

“Ever since Hollywood announced that ‘Godzilla’ was to be resurrected, the expectation for another Japanese Godzilla grew,” Toho said in a statement. “And if we were to newly produce, we looked into Japanese creators who were the most knowledgeable and who had the most passion for Godzilla.”

Janusz Grünspek is an artist who uses little more than glue and tiny wooden dowels to create scale replicas of everyday objects such as a laptop, chandelier, or power tools. Hmmm, I wonder if he could construct a scale replica of Godzilla (and how many dowels would that take). Check out more of his work here.

Over at TV Insider, Oriana Schwindt gives a list of the Top 5 Fight Scenes That Pack A Punch:

#5 Arrow vs Flash:

#4 The Real Housewives of New York City: Aviva vs Everyone

#3 Game of Thrones: The Mountain vs The Viper

I won’t spoil which fight scenes made the top two (you’ll have to click the link to find out) other than to say neither one of them is King Kong vs. Godzilla.

As a kid, the idea of being a superhero greatly appealed to me. Actually, it wasn’t so much being a superhero as having super powers. Being able to walk on walls like Spider-Man seemed like a really cool idea to me. Or being able to create any object I wanted with Green Lantern’s power ring. And being able to run like the Flash or lift one of the Great Pyramids like Superman? Can’t beat those powers. Unlike many kids, I didn’t have much appreciation for Batman growing up. To me, he was just a normal guy. Yeah he was the world’s greatest detective, was mega rich, had lots of cool gadgets, and could fight really well, but at the end of the day, I wanted to be one of those heroes who had cool powers. I do know that many people love Bruce Wayne. This next link is for all the kids and adults who wish they could be the Dark Knight (and for anyone else who simply thinks this is rather cool). A real-life Batman suit has been created:

Made from Kevlar, quarter inch Kydex plating and impact resistant foam, Armatus Designs created a real life version of the Batman suit. It won’t stop bullets or make you Bruce Wayne but it is stab and slash resistant while still being pretty lightweight and flexible. I wouldn’t recommend you putting it on and becoming a vigilante or anything.

I must stress that last part. Don’t become a Batman-like vigilante. Everyone knows the police don’t like vigilantes (and for heaven’s sake, definitely don’t become one if you’re a Person of Color). They don’t like anyone using brutal or excessive force unless they have the sanction of the government.

That suit is pretty nifty though. I bet it wouldn’t offer much protection from Godzilla’s atomic breath (now I want to see a Batman/Godzilla battle).

Speaking of Godzilla (oh, wait, I have been already)…have you ever wanted to stay in a King of the Monsters-themed hotel room?  Come April 24, you’ll be able to, provided you live in (or have the money to visit) Tokyo, Japan.

Opening April 24, the 30-story Hotel Gracery, which sits atop the Toho Cinema in Shinjuku, boasts three themed rooms: two Godzilla View Rooms, which overlook the 39-foot head of the King of the Monsters that erupts from the roof of the theater below; and the Godzilla Room, which, as the video shows, boasts its own statue, a gallery of movie posters and an enormous claw that looms over the beds. The hotel of course also offers Godzilla memorabilia and special sweets.

The Godzilla Room costs between $334 to $417, depending on the night, while the Godzilla View Rooms go for a more reasonable $125.
