Pride Month 2017 looks like it’s going out on a good note. With 393 for, 226 against, and four in abstention, Germany’s Parliament voted to legalize same-sex marriage!

Germany’s parliament has voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage, joining many other western democracies in granting gay and lesbian couples full rights, including adoption.

Norbert Lammert, president of the parliament, said 393 lawmakers voted in favour, 226 voted against and four abstained.

Of course, at least one bigot had to make her opinion known. You know, bc they always have to let the world know how they feel. One last reminder from Chancellor Angela Merkel that she doesn’t think gay people should have the same rights as heterosexuals. Like so many others, she has an incredibly restrictive idea of marriage. I kind of wonder on what basis she opposes SSM (i suspect its for the age old reason of “imaginary being in the sky gets a major case of the sads when gay people get nice things”). I also wonder how much she knows about the many different types of marriage that have existed around the world:

The chancellor, Angela Merkel, said she voted against the move because she believed marriage was for a man and a woman. She said the decision for her was a personal one, but she hoped the result would lead to greater social peace.

The election-year bill was pushed by Merkel’s leftist rivals, who pounced on a U-turn she made on Monday in which she softened her stance against gay marriage, a manoeuvre that left many conservative politicians fuming.

The lower house approved the law on Friday, hours before the Bundestag begins its summer recess.

Next time you have a bigoted personal position, you ought to keep it to yourself, rather than working to impose your views on others, thus restricting their freedom.

The law will most likely take effect by year’s end.
