Canadians complicit in Afghanistan torture

In 2007, Amir Attaran, law professor at University of Ottawa, famously wrote an opinion piece that stated his belief that the then-new Canada-Afghanistan detainee agreement left a loophole open that would allow for torture of prisoners. Turns out, he was practically prescient even without evidence of such, and yet nobody heeded his words.

The bombshell dropped last week — a former Canadian diplomat to Afghanistan stated as much, saying “[a]ccording to our information, the likelihood is that all the Afghans we handed over were tortured. For interrogators in Kandahar, it was a standard operating procedure.”

This coupled with the fact that Canadian operatives were “taking six times as many detainees as British troops and 20 times as many as the Dutch”, and “did not monitor their conditions; took days, weeks or months to notify the Red Cross; kept poor records; and to prevent scrutiny, the Canadian Forces leadership concealed this behind ‘walls of secrecy.'” This indicates not only were Canadians complicit, they were criminally negligent in handling detainees. They were, in essence, rounding up large masses of people, turning them over to Afghan authorities, and allowing widespread torture of probably innocent people. They relied on two oversight bodies that had no jurisdiction and no power to provide oversight, specifically the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission and the International Committee of the Red Cross, and as neither body had any real power, major abuses including apparently electrocution, open flames and extreme temperatures happened as a direct result of our actions.

You can understand my outrage over this. Canada is known internationally as primarily peacekeeping specialists. I point the finger squarely at those unnamed government officials that set these precedents, discussed these actions openly, and covered these actions up. No matter which side of the political spectrum they are on, they MUST be held accountable.

That non-partisan outrage notwithstanding, there’s a familiar refrain being played from — and this should come as no surprise to those that have been paying attention for the last three years — the Tories.

Conservative members of the committee attacked his credibility and even suggested he was playing into the hands of the Taliban by undermining Canada’s military effort in Afghanistan.

“This entire exercise of attempting to draw a link between the Canadian Forces and prison treatment without a shred of evidence is playing right into the hands of the insurgents,” Tory MP Cheryl Gallant (Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke) said.

Because weeding out the evil scumbags responsible for these abuses is obviously equivalent to “lending aid and comfort”.

I weep for my country, especially where we were once on higher ground with regard to our handling of the wars Bush dragged Harper into. Now our politicians are as blood-stained.

From this article at World Socialist Web Site:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other senior Conservative ministers have claimed that they knew nothing of Colvin’s reports—although he sent them to senior officials at the CAF, the Foreign Affairs Ministry, and the Prime Minister’s Office—and had no reason, prior to Spring 2007, to believe that Afghan authorities were abusing detainees handed over to them by the CAF.

These claims have never been credible. The UN, the Afghan Human Rights Commission, an Afghan government body, and the US government had all said that they had evidence Afghan security forces routinely abused prisoners, including torturing them.

Regardless of this site’s political skew, I have no reason to doubt that the Conservatives in office presently and at the time of the wars would deny knowledge of these reports, despite this information being available pretty much everywhere.

Harper in March smeared his political opponents and pretty well everyone that dared to mention the brewing scandal over potential abuses:

I can understand the passion that the Leader of the Opposition and members of his party feel for Taliban prisoners. I just wish occasionally they would show the same passion for Canadian soldiers.

Mr. Harper, you are directly responsible for war crimes as Prime Minister while these war crimes were being discussed and subsequently covered up. You and your cabinet, and anyone who was complicit in these actions, must resign immediately. Especially in light of your trying to question the patriotism of those who would prefer Canada not become torturers. People who would prefer our fundamentally good nation not descend into the rabbit hole that is sacrificing our higher moral ground in the pursuit of a theocrat’s religious crusades.

I only hope we Canadians are a better people than those that allowed George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney to walk away from the bloody mess they created in the Middle East with nary a repercussion. And people wonder why I call him Bush-Lite.

Our planet and its resources

It’s a common theme among conservatives and theists that our planet’s natural resources should be exploited with little regard to either the environment, the finite nature of those resources, or the sustainability of that exploitation. In some cases it is pure greed — the profit motive of grabbing and selling and using everything in sight ASAP is extraordinarily high, with the downside only becoming readily apparent in future generations. In other cases, as with the theists enraptured with the Rapture, those “future generations” aren’t going to be around anyway, because of some repeatedly-hypothesized judgment day that has yet to materialize.

Foxaganda Vs Olbermann/Maddow

Would that I could wave a magic wand and turn Fox “News” into an actual news station, one that doesn’t actively distort reality and organize protest marches against their home country’s government in order to undercut gains made toward providing health care to everyone by cutting out the profit-motive health insurance racket. After being explicitly targeted by Fox, along with her compatriot Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow lays the whole charade bare, and explains exactly what the difference is between a news organization with a political tilt, and a political organization with the intentionally crafted veneer of being a news organization.

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

Make no mistake, Fox is not a legitimate news organization. It’s a well-funded way of disseminating only the most basic aspects of the news, packaged in such a way as to not offend the conservatives that watch it, while at the same time attempting to foment dissent against the Democratic party and the current government. I’m SO glad the Obama administration is calling them out on their disingenuity and their true status as propaganda arm of the Loyal Opposition. Maybe now they’ll either be held accountable (*snicker*), or eventually go out of business (*HAHAHA*).

Hat tip to Greg Laden. And Rachel Maddow, of course.

RCimT: Catch-up

I told you last time I still had a ton of crap in my tabs. It’s exploding again, so here we go, one more time. (I really gotta stop ctrl-clicking on everything interesting!)

First up and above the fold, Stephanie Zvan got good-but-complicated news with regard to her biopsy, suggesting the lesions she has on her cervix are not invasive cancer and can be treated. The blogosphere heaves a collective sigh of relief.

Much more below the fold.

In the beginning, God… separated the heavens and the earth?

I know, I’m way late on this. But, here you go. A Christian Bible scholar and devout theist believes she’s found a mistranslation in the Bible, and it’s a whopper.

Van Wolde, aged 54, will present her thesis at the Radboud University, in The Netherlands, during a conference. This is the same institution where she teaches, The Telegraph reports. She says that the accurate translation does not imply that the Earth started with God. The beginning of the book of Genesis is merely the introduction in a narration, she reveals. “It meant to say that God did create humans and animals, but not the Earth itself,” the expert explains. Christian scholars currently teach that God created everything around us, including the stars and the planet. This no longer seems to be the case, according to the new translation.

“Something was wrong with the verb. God was the subject (God created), followed by two or more objects. Why did God not create just one thing or animal, but always more?” “There was already water. There were sea monsters. God did create some things, but not the Heaven and Earth. The usual idea of creating-out-of-nothing, creatio ex nihilo, is a big misunderstanding,” the expert says.

Will that end creationism? Considering there’s a movement overlapping creationism called “conservatives”, and they’re in the process of rewriting the Bible themselves over at Conservapedia, I have my doubts. In fact, I fully expect some armchair scholars that were breast-fed by Ken Ham, to show up and debate against this being a valid retranslation.

Did I really just say “breast-fed by Ken Ham”? Oh my. I’m going to go pour Dran-o in my eyes to get that image out.

The nexus of politics and religion

Neal Gabler at the LA Times has this exactly right — the party that kowtowed for too long to the Religious Right has successfully converted the entire conservative movement into a fundamentalist religion with all the trappings of radicalization and irrationality.

Religious groups may have found a community of interest with a political party to further their aims; they have not, by and large, sought to convert the political system into a religious one. Until now.

The tea-baggers who hate President Obama with a fervor that is beyond politics; the fear-mongers who warn that Obama is another Hitler or Stalin; the wannabe storm troopers who brandish their guns and warn darkly of the president’s demise; the cable and talk-radio blowhards who make a living out of demonizing Obama and tarring liberals as America-haters — these people are not just exercising their rights within the political system. They honestly believe that the political system — a system that elected Obama — is broken and only can be fixed by substituting their certainty for the uncertainties of American politics.

As we are sadly discovering, this minority cannot be headed off, which is most likely why conservatism transmogrified from politics to a religion in the first place. Conservatives who sincerely believed that theirs is the only true and right path have come to realize that political tolerance is no match for religious vehemence.

Unfortunately, they are right. Having opted out of political discourse, they are not susceptible to any suasion. Rationality won’t work because their arguments are faith-based rather than evidence-based. Better message control won’t work. Improved strategies won’t work. Grass-roots organizing won’t work. Nothing will work because you cannot convince religious fanatics of anything other than what they already believe, even if their religion is political dogma.

I shouldn’t pull that large a blockquote, but the entire damned piece deserves a read. If we’re to understand why fundamentalists are now dominating the discourse in America, and pulling the nation further and further into the rabbit hole, we need to understand why, and how, religion has perverted the Loyal Opposition.

RCimT: Sexuality

It’s Saturday night, we all have big days ahead of us tomorrow for various reasons, and I need to trim back on my ballooning tab session, so allow me to rapid-fire-style link a bunch of stuff I have open presently. First, stuff to do with sex and sexuality. As usual, with anything intrinsic to human nature, there’s going to be some overlap with religion. I’ll try to keep it relevant though.

First up, Discover Blogs has a fascinating article about the brain and how it processes sexuality, as well as how we figured out that, like most other aspects of your body, it’s mostly brain-centric. There’s even a video! (Of the brain. Sorry to disappoint.)

Apparently Jesus isn’t a contraceptive. Who knew?

The ever-hilarious website The Gaytheist Agenda has posted a revealing video suggesting that religious crazies in Iowa are not only against gay marriage — they’re apparently also against marriage in which the couple are infertile or otherwise can’t produce more babies that are born into the faith.

Stephanie has recently pointed us all to this post at Vagina Dentata, though I’ve sadly only gotten around to actually reading this now. It’s about the feminist movement, being able to express sexuality without an implication of consent to harassment, and EA Games booth babes, among other things. Brilliant read.

In the meantime, one out of thirty-three female churchgoers are targeted for sexual harassment by their faith’s leaders. Considering how many faithful women there are, that’s a shitload of sexual advances by people that are supposed to be celibate. Celibacy works just as well as abstinence-only education, apparently.

And finally, Blag Hag covers an anti-porn event run by religious conservatives, and covers the lying-for-Jesus in great detail. She also wrote a letter to Purdue University, who hosted the event, and got nothing but a form-letter in reply.

Zdenny’s Greatest Misses

Zdenny has 22 comments in a holding pattern at the moment, and I continue to anxiously await any sort of reasonable attempt at re-earning his commenting privilege — though I’m starting to think it’s a lost cause, and I should simply let him languish in his holding pen. However, many of the things he’s posted are so utterly laughable or enraging, that I figured I should share it with you, gentle reader. If you have no stomach for this sort of thing, I strongly advise you not click “continue reading.”

The scary confluence of religious fervour and political brainwashing

There’s a very disturbing trend going on in America at the moment. In the face of mountains of evidence to the contrary, there’s a fraction of right-wingers who get all their information from OneNewsNow, Drudge Report, Fox News and their local churches. None of these news sources care about the truth — they all have their respective agendas. ONN wants to make sure everything is viewed through the filter of evangelical Christianity, the Drudge Report is more concerned with making money and getting scoops than verifying the truth through independent research, Fox News profits directly from the downward spiral of the Republican Party by playing to the fearful conservative low-information base and reinforcing their already crazy ideas, and their local churches of course care only about reinforcing their leaders’ religious beliefs, no matter how antithetical to their foundational teachings these beliefs actually are.

These folks are the common, salt of the earth folks. Folks that are easily swayed to believe they are right and good and just.

ONOES OBAMACARE KILLS GRANNIES

Seriously, can the wingnuts get any more shrill? Mike Haubrich over at Tangled Up in Blue has posted a letter by wingnut extraordinaire Gordon James Klingenschmitt, author for the conserva-rag Human Events, and you can practically measure the level of insanity on the Timecube scale if for no other reason than the sheer amount of text-decorations that are used. Yes, THAT Klingenschmitt, as though there were any other — the same guy that violated naval code by attending get-out-the-vote events in full uniform.

Can a government-run hospital still allow Christian chapels, or pay Christian chaplains, or permit Christian doctors to pray Christian prayers with their willing patients, or even allow Christian parents to c ontrol the health care options forced upon their dying children?  Just ask Florida Hospital Chaplain Danny Harvey, fired last year from Leesburg Regional Medical Center because he prayed “in Jesus name” at a public memorial service.   Ask Christian Pharmacists who Washington has already forced to dispense “Plan-B” abortion pills against their conscience, or doctors denied a “conscience clause” to opt out of abortions when Obama refused to renew Bush’s pro-life executive orders.  Ask Nurse Catherina Lorena Cenzon-DeCarlo, who recently was forced to participate in a second-trimester abortion against her will, and is now suing Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan for “blatantly” violating her rights under a 35 year old federal law that protects health care workers with religious objections from being forced to assist in murderous abortions.  Ask Pentecostal Ministers Dale and Leilani Neumann, who were charged with second-degree murder of their 11-year-old daughter, because they refused to trust the power of a government hospital to heal their little girl who tragically died with diabetes.  Can you say mandatory godlessness in “health” care?  If government has power to dictate your health care options, they also have power to seize your children when you refuse. Think about it.  Will you dare refuse the H1N1 vaccine when ordered to poison your children?  No religious exemptions for doctors, patients, or parents are readily apparent in the current Obamacare bill. So take action with me…

And people wonder why us atheists consider the stakes so high. It’s people like this that we worry about getting their hands on children and indoctrinating them into the feedback loop that is the religious wingnutosphere.

Mike on this paragraph:

The next most disturbing paragraph is the one in which he claims that the gubmint wants to take over all the catholic hospitals so that the atheists can shut down chapels and take down all the crosses. Perhaps Klingenschmitt is just sore because the DOD has not allowed the Crusaders to turn the US Military into God’s Army, whose mission is to kill or convert all the Muslims. He is still smarting because the VA, a secular institution, removed crosses from shared facilites in respect to the First Amendment’s establishment clause.

Mike goes on to break the rest of the argument down with surgical precision and skill.

If there is nothing in writing, the hospital has to make a decision for the patient. The family’s expression of the patient’s wishes will be taken into account, but can’t be used as a final decision maker. If that person had a directive to state hir wishes clearly that he or she wishes to remain alive awaiting a miraculous cure, then the hospital can at least refer to that. This is not so hard, is it?

Nobody knows what Terry Schiavo wanted. In the end result, her husband and her parents waged a prolonged expensive legal battle to make a decision for her. Yes, the same fucking lying hypocrtical conservatives used the power and the authority of the government to step in to make a decision for a patient; taking sides in a battle that should have been left to the family. They even voted without quorum to specifically make a law that would prevent the hospital from removing the machines that kep Terry Sciavo’s brain-dead body alive. This could have all been avoided had Terri Schiavo created an Advance Care Directive. And this is what the provision does. It prevents the government from making a decision contra the patient’s wishes.

But, instead, the insurance lobbies who want no sort of insurance reform, choose to scare the bejabus out of senior citizens by claiming that Obama wants to kill old people. That murdering, lying fascist socialist Nazi bastard!

Thanks for keeping a civil discourse, Gord.

If you’re an American and you’re concerned about health care or what the government has planned, you owe it to yourselves to go read this post, in which both sides of the story — both crazy and rational — are laid bare.

Equal access to health care is a right you should demand as part of your social contract with your government. Stop listening to the lying murderous bastards that control the health care industry and would murder you for an extra dime. Stop listening to the fear-mongering coming from the Bible Beltway. Throw off your yokes, and demand the same rights that, were conservatives in other countries to suggest these rights be abridged, would result in every conservative being run out of town on a rail.
