Trans panels at FtBCon 2!

This year’s FtBCon, running from January 31 through February 2, will have three trans panels on awesomely diverse topics. These include:

Between A Rock And…: Non-Binary Gender in Atheism (February 1, 11 AM – 12 PM)

When women started talking about women’s issues in the skeptic and atheist movements, it created an incredibly charged atmosphere within those communities. A couple years later, we’re still having this heated discussion. In talking about gender-related issues, how well do people within the community address trans* people, particularly non-binary-identified individuals? Is there an overlap between misogynistic attitudes and transphobic attitudes? Is non-binary erasure a problem for the atheist/skeptic communities? What place do binary and non-binary trans* people have within the community, and what are their contributions?

Trans* Representation in Video Games (February 1, 8 PM – 9 PM)

The few transgender characters in the video gaming world are problematic, if not outright dehumanizing. But are there representatives that aren’t complete stereotypes or foils for transphobic narratives?

Trans Men and Trans Masculinity (February 2, 1 PM – 2 PM)

The transgender male and trans masculine community includes people with a wide range of identities and lived experiences. Panelists will answer some common myths and questions and share their lived experiences. We will also address some of the similarities and differences between our experiences and those of trans women and cisgender people.

These panels feature some of the brightest minds in the trans and secular communities. Be there!

Thank y’all for this! The last two in particular interest me a great deal.

Although I work in the video game industry and would identity as a gamer, I’ve generally steered away from anything that was potentially problematic for my own well-being. To which, I don’t think I can name a trans character beyond Birdo/Birdie originally in SMB2(also: not human). At the time, I didn’t even notice.

The exception to that might be the modern independant games movement. There are several trans people producing games online that, even if they don’t explicitly have a trans character, deal with trans issues.

    Looking forward to these!

    Very fascinating discussions!

I was wondering if any of you could give me some links to consider? I’m looking for places where any and all of the persons with non-traditional sexualities and means of identifying themselves gather to discuss their experiences and try to figure out what all of this means as a group.

I moderate a discussion board on a website and we have had trans individuals (and people who thought they might be trans and were not sure) come over before for discussion and questions. I have tried to be really supportive and done what I could to make sure the conversation was well moderated, but I’m always interested in learning more. I tend to learn best by watching the folks in question talk among themselves in a place where I can ask them questions.

So far the general story that I tell people is that we have different software possibilities and hardware possibilities. Attraction (presence/absence, and direction), gender self-identification (male, female, both, neither) are basically things with many options. I’m also pretty good at doing literature searches so I have done some looking around, but I don’t have a good sense of how effective I have been.

    Any recommendations?
