I’m back home and wanted to share some of the food I find only in Puerto Rico.

Cornmeal for sorullos

The cornmeal with added water to make it into a dough.

Grandma Judy’s Sorullos
2 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups cornmeal

Directions:

Boil the water and add the cornmeal until you’re satisfied with its consistency. You’ll want the dough to be thick and pliable.
While you heat the oil for frying, lightly wet your hand your hands well and scoop some cornmeal, roll the dough into a ball, then shape into sticks.

Repeat the process with the remaining dough. Remember to wet your hands as needed. Fry the sorrullos until golden brown.

For the mayo-ketchup sauce used for dipping you’ll need to mix mayonnaise, ketchup, garlic powder or Grandma Judy’s garlic sauce in a small bowl. Set aside for dipping once sorullos are cooled.

Annatto seeds. Grandma uses these to add color to her food.

To make the achiote, heat annatto seeds in oil until oil has become red. Drain. Grandma saves the seeds because she can reuse them several times until they’ve lost all their color.

And finally, every morning grandma would make cream of wheat. We call it Farina, which is really a brandname of corn wheat. A small bowl of this and some coffee, and I’m taken back to my grandma’s house. Food is memory, food is love.

These are just some of the foods I had when I visited grandma. I hope you enjoyed reading about them as much as I enjoyed eating them all.
