Monday's Maddening Meme 11.2.15

This is not a meme I agree with. I think it draws from the same mistaken assumptions that lead people to believe that Ben Carson cannot be an accomplished neurosurgeon and believe the things he does. The man *is* very intelligent. He was a neurosurgeon. As his Wiki entry states:

He was the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland from 1984 until his retirement in 2013. Among his achievements as a surgeon were separation of conjoined twins and a technique for controlling brain seizures. Both achievements were recognized in 2008 with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

All of that means he is extremely intelligent-in one particular field.
Dismissal of that is insulting and an badly aimed attack at the man.
One can be-and people demonstrate this all the time-intelligent and skilled in one area but have no clue in so many other areas. Dr. Carson is one of those people. He has his area of expertise, and he has a host of other faults, such as his homophobia, xenophobia, and racism.

In arguing against the Dr. Carson, one should ensure that the arguments are well-aimed. This one is awful bc it conflates all the asinine and bigoted things he says with his skill as a neurosurgeon and then dismisses all of it together. As if his comments negate his skills as a neurosurgeon. It doesn’t work that way. Everything he learned to be a neurosurgeon exists in the same brain that produces lovely bullshit such as “people go into prison straight and come out gay”.

Dr. Seuss would only be a more “credible”* doctor than Dr. Carson if Dr. Seuss were a superior neurosurgeon. Last I checked, Dr. Seuss was not a neurosurgeon, let alone one superior to Dr. Carson.
