Cubes of coffee? You have cubical coffee cups? Excellent. This is a good place to visit. Unless… You aren’t suggesting coffee should be adulterated, are you?

  2. 7

I think I might need to hire a barista 🙂
I’m more familiar with serving alcoholic beverages. So if you want a Long Island Tea, Long Beach Tea, or Tokyo Tea, I’m your man.

  3. 10

So then I was walking down the street and HEY! There’s my favorite bartender! What happened to your old… shut down? Management threw a wobbly? That’s actually how you use “wobbly”? Great! Glad to see you, and hopefully a few of the old regulars. Serve me up a Cuba Libre, and keep the change!

  4. 23

By the way, if anyone is able to contact other Lounge regulars (or anyone who might be interested), feel free to throw ’em this link. I’ve contacted Portia, Esteleth, Dalillama, Lynna, and morgan already.

  5. 30

    Heya
    I missed you all!
And I think I’ll take a single malt. Make it a double.
Apparently there’s been a problem with some of my college credits they knew about for years but didn’t tell me until now…

  6. 31

One Hendricks martini, straight up, with a twist please. And damn, wouldn’t you know it, the one and only clique I ever belonged to went and closed down. Nice spot ‘ya got here Tony.

  7. 39

Drinks are good. Too many drinks? Not so much. 🙂

Is there a name for rum mixed with Coco Rico? I drank at least a gallon of that in Puerto Rico earlier this year.

  8. 41

Anyone have contact info for Ogvorbis, opposablethumbs, and Saad? I feel kinda squicky dropping into the Between me and my mind thread at Pharyngula to mention this space, but if it came from someone else, would that be better?

  9. 43

    Helen Heels:
Good luck at the job interview. And I wish I could go to a Sanders meet up. Boy that would be good.
As for the divorce, is this something you’re wanting (I just don’t know if I should say congrats or offer my sympathies)?

  10. 44

Tony, this may be way out of line, but perhaps PZ could let folks know about this new alternative to the Lounge. Someone who has previously corresponded with him might send an email and find out if he would be averse to the mention. Just a thought.

  11. 45

That might be a good idea. I don’t know. It won’t be something I would do. Anyone else is open to.

On a different subject, I just had one of my friends (a cab driver I’ve used in the past) bring me some food over to the house bc he knows my cupboards are bare. he brought some frozen chicken breasts, some canned beans, some rice, and a whole chicken. It was awesome timing bc I was running low on proteins.

related to the job search, I haven’t heard back from Seville Quarter (the place I interviewed with last week). I sent out two resumes today, so hopefully I’ll hear something soon.

  12. 49

The problem with shouting directions to this place anywhere at Pharyngula is that, even as it would inform the people you want to reach, it’ll tip off the endless hordes of others you don’t want; and then, you have the Moderator’s Nightmare.

  13. 50

A FB friend was kind enough to order me two bottles of Siesta Key rum-one silver, one spiced. I’d never had either before. They’re quite nice. I’m drinking some rum punch at the moment.

I forgot, if anyone can get in touch with carlie, bluentx, and awakeinmo that would be great. That reminds me I need to get in touch with CD.

  14. 53

Hi everyone! (I’m here without an invitation, I hope that’s OK)

    [edit-Tony]
On the other hand, even free WP blogs are easily exported (the export function can also be used to backup the site).
I saw that the webmaster for Atheism+ was willing to host a new lounge. Maybe they’ll be gracious enough to host your site in full (naturally server space can be an issue, but hosting a blog, or multiple blogs, can generate a bit of ad revenue, though it almost never covers the costs).

    P.S.
I’m in a nostalgic mood so I’m going over old Dome/Lounge threads. Plenty of people who aren’t here have posted their emails. Should I contact them? I’ve never emailed any of them before, but they might be interested in this place.

  15. 54

And another thing – I wasn’t able to add any links in my above comment. Don’t know if that’s reversible or not, but it’s definitely changeable in an out-side hosted WP blog.

  16. 55

you should be able to. Cicely does it frequently. Maybe it had something to do with your comment being in moderation. Try it again when you have time.

  17. 56

For the time being, given how things are going at FtB, and how I’d like to keep this area friendly and relaxed, I think its best to not discuss the events going on. Please?

  18. 57

Both are appropriate, Tony. It’s difficult, but for the best. Some things are best put behind us. Kinda like the situation that brought us here. Thanks for giving us a place to visit. It’s good to be in touch.

  19. 69

    Dalillama:
I feel you. I had to have both canines pulled due to crappy bone density. On the plus side, they used cadaver bone for the repair grafts sooooo….. ZOMBIE MOUTH

  20. 71

    Tony:
I picked up the latest Ms.Marvel (excellent on all points), Gotham Academy (also excellent), and Squirrel Girl (sadly, the art just ain’t doin it for me or The Kiddo).

Also, one of Kiddos BFFs is an Egyptian-expat and had no idea there were female Muslim superheroes. She is super excited at that and is wanting to read more comics now.

  21. 73

    Good morning
I can shoot CD a mail.
In other news, according to my records, my college credits are all correct. Folks, never make the assumption that people paid for doing a job are actually competent in doing so…
I also have a repair date for the washing machine…

  22. 75

    Helen
Wishing you the best in both endeavours. May the outcome be favourable for you.

I know I’m a bit self-absorbed at the moment, I’m sorry. Reality is throwing lots in my general direction at the moment.

  23. 77

I’m glad I have a lot of clothes. Because my washing machine that died months ago has not been replaced. Good luck with your Giliell.

  24. 78

    IJoe:
    I missed you as well.

    Helen:
    Best of luck

    General:
Because the medical transportation service recorded my address wrong and failed to record my phone number, I am missing my appointment as I speak. I am astonishingly angry about this, especially since I called yesterday, which would have been a great time for someone on their end to notice they hadn’t got my number.

  25. 79

    Tony:
That list is hilarious. Thanks for the link.

    Dalillama:
Oh that is harsh. My commiserations.

    Giliell:
Managing (and stressing about) the slings and arrows of life is very different from being self-absorbed. Focusing on yourself sometimes is both appropriate and necessary especially when the slings and arrows are firing full volleys.

  26. 80

    Dalillama:
    wince&hug

I lucked into a complete lack of wisdom teeth—[insert the usual joke here]—but I’ve had enough other molars pulled or cut out; you have my sympathy/empathy.

hugs for giliell. Reality bites. I figure that that is where all those unused wisdom teeth go.

    🙂

    iJoe!

Yeah, Tony! is super-awesome for letting us all come hang out at his place.

    Hear that, Tony!? You’re Super-Awesome!

  27. 81

slowly walks in stands off a bit, shyly

    Erm… hello?

Tony? Tony! Hey! How are you? You need a barrista? Tea is my specialty. I can even bring along various different teasets for various different kinds of tea…

Also… could I bring sipping rum to add to the bar? It could use some Ron Zacapa, Zaffra, and Zaya… 😀

  28. 82

    HUgs you all right back

    Dalillama
Fuck, that sucks. I hope you can reschedule soon.

    Tony
The machine is just a little over 4 months old. They’re going to get that thing in order at their expense.

  29. 83

Hiya Tony! Thanks for providing a space. (And I really should have bookmarked you blog before now, anyhow.)

    Chocolate Angel Food cake, anyone?

PS I can contact opposablethumbs. I will be putting up my hotmail address at PZ’s last mention of the Lounge, though I don’t know if I’m the most trusted person therefore I cannot guarantee I will be contacted.

    Tony
If you’re going through old Lounge and ‘Dome threads, let me know if you happen upon the Lounge thread ca. early August of last year. This is an archival question.

Speaking of questions, what, no questionnaire? For ANYONE??? weeps as the old questionnaire archive is swept into the blazing fire I worked so hard on that…

  32. 93

Tony, if you don’t mind, I’d like to re-establish the pillow fort in a convenient corner. And here is a lovely overflowing basket of hugs for everyone.

    Tony
I apologize – because this shows up all funny at work, I mixed up you and AlexanderZ. Please refer previous comment first sentence to AlexanderZ.

In other news, I can contact carlie and bluentx. I can’t remember if I have awakeinmo’s email.

  34. rq

    YOB
Any suggestions for new questionnaire questions? I’m assuming we’re dropping the ban on horses… right? Right?

  35. 98

    Welcome newcomers!

@Dalillama – That’s so typical of small-minded bureaucrats. Fuck them. Hope you still get the treatment. Pulling out wisdom teeth aren’t as bad as they say. I had one pulled this year, it was in such a bad state that it quite literally crumbled in my mouth a week before the appointment. All the doctor had to was some relatively minor cleaning/stitching up. I could eat solid food two hours after the surgery (chewing with only one half of my mouth, obviously, but still chewing).

@rq – you mean this thread?

  36. rq
    100

    AlexanderZ
Nope, right from the beginning of August, preferebly sometime around the 9th… but I guess that’s close enough and I can work from there on my own. Thanks!

  37. 102

    AlexanderZ:
I’m not ignoring any of the blogs. I’m still reading the email updates I get when PZ posts something new. I just need to get over some stuff before I can go back to that space. Other than I’m not going to comment any further on this.

  38. 109

No, I’m not sure if I have her mail.
    I mailed CD.

    hmmm, a new questionaire?
    Favourite kind of alcohol?
    Peanutbutter or Jam?
Weirdest word in your native language?

  39. 111

    Giliell:
Perhaps ‘favorite beverage’ might be better, since some people don’t like alcohol.

Hmm, and what about thunk? Nick Gotts?

  40. rq
    114

    Thanks, AlexanderZ.

I may have an email for Beatrice, but I don’t know if it’s still active or regularly visited by her.

  41. 116

    AlexanderZ:
Ok good. You were able to create a link. I worked on stuff last night since you pointed out the problem.

  42. 118

@Tony – I was able to create the link to the Lounge, but not the Tdome. All the links to the Tdome are broken, they attach the desired address to the address of this thread, creating a mess. I also posted a link without html tags, but it’s probably in moderation right now.

    @Chigau – greetings!

  43. 120

OK – the embed links properly you MUST use the full address, in the case of all FTB links it means adding the “http” and “www” thingies with all the proper dots and slashes.

  44. 123

I wasn’t going to say anything, but since the topic has been broached, I also have a wee spot of difficulty reading light on dark. BUT! It’s your blog and I’m just very thankful that you’ve offered it up for this thread.

    Questionnaire ideas:
    Favorite nighttime/evening beverage?
    Peanut butter or jam?
Weirdest word in your native language?
Favorite non-dirty word that sounds kinda dirty (in your native language).
General attitude towards table top gaming?

    Peas?
    Miracle WhhhiP?

    YOB, chigau:
If I can figure out how to I’ll see if I can’t switch the colors (to others: would that be a problem for reading). It may take me some time bc I’m still learning everything WordPress can do.

    Oh, and ajb47, and FossilFishy!

  46. 125

Is this something better? I’m not fond of the layout, so I’ll probably change it, but if this color scheme works better, I’ll keep looking for similar.

  47. 127

Colour scheme looks good to me. Friendlier on the eye.
I see that Alexander has contacted folks, as the mail was forwarded to me

    Can I vent something?
I hate it when people tell me “you’re smarter than that” in an attempt to make me agree with them. It’s so fucking condescending.

But FINE, we can add others, too.

grabs a few pillows and a blanket and curls up

Dog got a tooth removed today, he has to eat his food dissolved in water to an oatmeal consistency and I don’t see that going over well.

And then we went to get the oil changed in our car only to find out the camber of the tires was too severe from the last alignment and now we need a full set of new tires. The inside edge is bald, but the outer edge looks like it still has plenty of tread left (hence me not noticing a problem as I check these things). This set should have had another 10K miles on them which, at the amount we currently use the car, should have lasted us another year or two. I’m pretty upset, because it means that the tires weren’t rotated and aligned the last time I’d paid for it to be done.

  50. 130

Much better for me, Tony, thanks.
Can you find a Preview button in your WordPress toolkit?

    YOB
What do you mean “peanut butter or jam”?

  51. 131

Oooh, Baskerville. Fancy. I like how the links now have their own colors (before that they looked like regular text).

    @YOG-
    Favorite nighttime/evening beverage?
    Kompot.
    Peanut butter or jam?
    Varenye, which is like jam.
Weirdest word in your native language?
Shmakodavka (=tiny person/creature, dismissive), but the weirdest name isn’t Russian, but only Russians would think calling their child that (true story, I knew a guy): Synchrophasotron
Favorite non-dirty word that sounds kinda dirty (in your native language)
Can’t think of one for English sounding words, but there are lots (LOTS!) in Hebrew that sound like cuss words in Russian. For example: Pis’ga is Hebrew for summit. Pizda is Russian for cnt. Many places in Israel are called summit-something. Most of them are settlements or otherwise non-central places. Which are exactly the type of locations where the numerous immigrants from former USSR were placed, thus changing the pronunciation of the location ever so slightly. The Israeli locals were not amused to learn that their Holy Summit-of-so-and-so is now unofficially known as cntville.
Also, whenever English speakers say blah-blah-blah to mock something, Russians hear slt-slt-sl*t.
General attitude towards table top gaming?
Can’t remember when was the last time I played any. Probably in high-school. I do remember that people liked playing Risk with me because I would always roll less then my opponent. However, I do play chess sometimes online, so it might be my answer. (Then again, I played pretty much every available table-top game on my computer, so make of it what you will).
    Horses?
Never! My parents decided I should learn to ride when I was 5. That fucking horse nearly killed me.
    Peas?
Sometimes, in Olivier salad (but I prefer canned corn instead).
    Miracle WhhhiP?
I don’t even know what that means.

  52. 133

@chigau – Preview is an installable widget. Tony doesn’t have access to those. Also comment numbers can be activated through wp-includes/comment-template(dot)php, but he’s probably denied access to that as well.

  53. 134

    AlexanderZ:
Thanks for those bits of knowledge. I was going to check around, but it’s out of my hands for now. Drat.
I do like how the links are different colors now as well.

And I’ve got to change this format (obviously I’ll keep the color scheme) The front page is not to my liking and I noticed at the bottom of the pages categories, recent posts, and recent comments are appearing twice.

    Giliell:
Ugh ‘you’re smarter than that’. New word: it’s a complinsult.

While I’m not certain what the weirdest word in Latvian is, some that may qualify: puķe (flower), karote (spoon), šķiņķis (ham), nūģis (a blob akin to a piece of dry snot), etc.
As for words that may sound dirty in English, I will only leave you with the inimitable phrase ass nazis (sharp knife) and the word neaiztiec, which, when said in a moment of heated emotion, sounds a lot like ‘nice tits’ but means ‘don’t touch’.

    Always, always, the cheese.

  55. 137

Miracle Whip a “salad dressing” that is often substituted for mayonnaise. Tasty stuff!

The spelling “WhhhiP” was me trying to riff off of Stewie Griffon from the Family Guy. He over enunciates the “h” in whip and ends with a hard P.

What do you mean “peanut butter or jam”?

That is one of giliell’s questions.

  56. 140

Thanks for hosting, Tony. I thought about doing something at my site, since I named it a pub, but as mostly a lurker in the Lounge, I wasn’t sure about how to go about announcing and inviting, etc. Plus, I’m a bit lazy.

  57. 141

@giliell – Yes, I sent an email to everyone whose address I had and who weren’t here already. Only three people wrote back. I fear that others have used only a one-time address which they don’t check, so I doubt they’ll see my email, but I hope they’ll get the word eventually. Somehow.

Re: “you’re smarter than that” – I can see how that’s condescending but I think it applies to a few people lately.

@chigau – Not only that, but some characters can act unusually. Asterisks only appear sometimes, for example.

    @YOB – thanks!

She posted up that people are welcome to contact her at her blog just after I re-posted my email on the Between thread. So…?

In any case, I emailed carlie, still to email opposablethumbs and Lynna, if no one has done so yet.

  66. 160

I just got a FB message from a friend who owns a bar in town and she’s looking for a part-time bartender/server for the day shifts. I’ve known her a long time (used to wait on her at a previous job), and while we’re not bestest buddies, I know enough to know she’ll consider me. She suggested I swing by tomorrow and talk to her. Hopefully this will pan out.

  67. 162

I apologize for bringing something serious in here but I’m not sure where else I will get group attention and advice from people with the information I need. I will be as vague and brief as I can.

I have a rather serious situation and may need some advice from a real person. Someone I know has committed a sexual assault against someones else that I know. I am now in the position of providing direct support for the people most directly assisting the victims. While I am confident that I am using a lot of of the information that I have learned from FTB and connected sources to be actual help and not just well-intentioned help, sometimes I just need a conversation with someone who can connect me to what I need and tell me if I am doing the right thing.

Does anyone know who I can email for this?

  68. 163

Shoot. I’m not sure who to direct you to.

  69. 166

Brony, go to RAINN, and also do what Morgan said.

So Tony, I brought with me a whole lotta rum for the bar. Multiples bottles of:
    Ron Zacapa Solera 23
    Zaffra Master Reserve 21
    Zaya Gran Reserva
    Ron Zacapa XO
    Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva

That’s all sipping rum, though, not for mixing. So I also brought various different Captain Morgans, Sailor Jerry’s, Krakens, and Bacardis.

I also brought along a whole bunch of these glasses for the rum and also any whiskey and/or Scotch people wanna sip. Oh… and multiple spirit aerators. They do wonders for bringing out flavors in spirits.

I can also get my hands on some great scotch for the bar if people want… like… the McCallan Replica series, for example… 😀

  70. 171

Ok, I’m over on FB in the silliest mood, so I thought I’d share. Comics typically have alternate takes of classic stories or divergent takes on characters. So I thought to apply it to movies.
What if the characters and plot of Fury Road were set on Waterworld (none of the Waterworld characters, just the world itself)?
What if Exorcist were set in space on a ship (ala Alien)?
What if Christian Bale Batman met Michael Keaton Batman?
Battle of the Jokers: Jack vs. Heath.

  71. 172

    Hi peeps!

@YOB: Well naturally its Peanut Butter and Peas, though not necessarily in that order or even on the same day.
(Okay, I just made myself sick with that one.)

    @Hi Tony,

    Ooh,ooh, pick me!

Fury Road vs. Waterworld- the acting would be a lot better, everybody would have wet hair and it would be really difficult to play the fire guitar while chasing people on Jet Skis.

Batman vs Batman: Well obviously there would have to be a Growl-Off. Hard to say who would win that one. I’m rooting for Keaton, though.

Joker vs. Joker: Acidic flowers vs. Pencils and Nicholson wins, but then he would lose because the acid set off Heath’s explosive vest.

I’m trying not to think of that Excorcist /Alien combo, but ya know what? It’s probably been done. Somebody is possessed by a horrible mouth monster that makes him kill his co-workers, after some religious taunting.

  72. 173

    Ikeke35:
    Keaton? Whoa.
I hate to break this to you, but in a growl-off, Mr. American Psycho is the winner.

Oh and the thought of peanut butter and peas is not sitting well with my dainty, delicate constitution.

  73. 177

Heath!Joker vs Jack!Joker: I may be biased, but I’m going with Heath!Joker here. Jack!Joker might have the acid flower and all that fun stuff, but frankly I think Heath!Joker would (rather ironically) out-plan Jack!Joker. Heath!Joker is way less predictable, as well (which I know is contradictory, but that’s the point). His plans are known only to him (not even to those working for him). And unlike Jack!Joker, Heath!Joker actually won. He actually beat Batman in the end.

Remember: Jack!Joker wanted revenge on Batman. Heath!Joker just wanted to watch the world burn.

Keaton!Batman vs Bale!Batman: well of course we have to compare both Batman and Bruce Wayne. In terms of Bruce Wayne, I think Bale!Bruce is better. Bale just played a much better Bruce overall. As for Batman… I can’t choose. Batman and Batman Returns were, for me, definitive until Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy came out. Now I am one of those rare people who actually doesn’t mind Bale’s Batvoice. I will grant that it was horribly overdone in Dark Knight, but that’s actually Nolan’s fault as he had it (I think) triple-tracked, whereas it was just single-tracked in Batman Begins (in Rises, he would do whatever he could to support Bale’s voice, which was straining under the effort; so that means at times it was triple-tracked, while at other times it was just Bale himself, single-tracked). So that was not Bale’s fault.

With the growl, Bale was trying to imitate the voice as it was described by basically everyone who wrote Batman, in the comics and the books. The animated Batvoice was actually a stray from the comics!canon, which always described the voice as a guttural growl. So, if anyone did the Batvoice wrong, it was Kevin Conroy (which is hilarious considering he’s thought of as the definitive Batman… which I get, because he does an amazing job, too). Bale is actually the only one to get the Batvoice right… so far.

Fury Road on Waterworld: All I know is, I want to see this movie.

Exorcist in Space: That would either be amazing (ala Alien), or absolutely terrible (ala Jason X, or Dracula 3000, or… well… you get the idea).

Want to hear something funny? There is a short in dashboard wiring of my mom-mobile. Because of it, the last CD I popped in the player is stuck forever playing. I can turn it off, but not change it. I was going to get it fixed this week, but I had other more pressing repairs to pay for. I can’t stand to drive in silence. So, for a month now ABBA’s Greatest Hits has blasted every time I turn the key. The kids don’t even care. (Yet) We all just sing along to ABBA everywhere we go. There are days when I am in and out of the car all day. I’m starting to hum ABBA when i’m not in the car. I don’t even know i’m doing it.

Jack!Joker was fun (much closer to Cesar’s version) but Heath!Joker was a super super-villain (closer, I think, to the comic version).

    Keaton!Bruce Wayne – best
    Bale!Batman -best
Kilmer/Clooney!Batman – didn’t happen. Any rumors that such abominations did happen are false, and I refuse to accept any evidence to the contrary.

The bat voice – keep in mind that it is his “disguised” voice. Someone trying to alter their voice to avoid identification is either going to go up or down. Up, unfortunately, is less likely to strike fear into the hearts of evil doers.

Exorcist In Space = Event Horizon

Fury Rooad on Jetskis? Epic Win!

    Tony…

Neither Val Kilmer nor George Clooney ever played Bruce Wayne or Batman. Neither has Joel Shumacher ever directed any Batman films.

I think they’d agree with me, as well.

    Also… I don’t know how Wilson!Batman, Lowery!Batman, West!Batman, and Animated!Batman would fit in to that, but it’d be interesting to think about…

I didn’t have to worry about comments reaching 50 so I never went back and adjusted the number. Early yesterday when I saw that we’d reached 50 in no time, I changed it to 200. I just changed it to 400. May let it carry over to a new page after that.

I think for some people, setting up a new post all the time might be beneficial – I’ve heard that some hand-held devices do not paginate at all, thus long threads are a chore for loading/reloading.

well crap. Maybe it’s only something I can do. Bummer. I do like being aware of some of the limitations to this platform. I suspect if I ever upgrade (I still use the free WordPress application), I can eliminate these minor things.

  89. 218

    Tony:

The HTML tag for putting in a line is < h r > without the spaces and it’s called a horizontal rule. I’m sure there is some typographical reason for why it’s called a “rule” instead of a “line”, but I don’t know what that reason might be.

I am distressed (in a low-wattage kinda way) by the inability to have asterisks show up within italicized comment-bits. The pouncehug loses some of its impact without the asterisks.

    Following YOB‘s questionnaire suggestions:

    1) Favorite nighttime/evening beverage? Generally the same Diet Rite Pure Zero that I drink all day. For alcoholic purposes, probably a screwdriver…or red wine.
    2) Peanut butter or jam? Jam. Preferably blackberry.
    3) Weirdest word in your native language? I’m gonna go with syzygy—also my All-Time Favoritest Scrabble Word.
    4) Favorite non-dirty word that sounds kinda dirty (in your native language). I have no real favorite, here. I’m still shopping for a signature quasi-swear, though, so I hope to see lots of others’ favorites.
    5) General attitude towards table top gaming? Far better than sliced bread. Beaten out (in the Non-Sex-Related category, that is!) only by reading—which inevitably feeds right into the tabletop gaming.
Everything feeds right into the tabletop gaming.
    6) Horses? +gesture of aversion and loathing+
    7) Peas? +sound-effects of nausea and vomiting+

    8) Miracle WhhhiP? Miracle Whip™ would be the Condiment of the Gods…if there were gods.

Tony!, I also prefer this color scheme; it’s much easier on the eyes!

Is there any way you can get some numbers for these comments? It makes it so much easier for me to keep track of where I left off.

    2) Peanut butter or jam?
    Jam. Peanuts are not sweet
    3) Weirdest word in your native language?
Difficult. German has so many. I go with “fremdschämen”: when you feel ashamed because somebody else makes an ass of themselves in public
    4) Favorite non-dirty word that sounds kinda dirty (in your native language).
Geil. Which can mean horny, but usually means cool/awesome

  96. 229

This is a rather more expansive questionnaire.

    Questionaire:
    1) Favorite nighttime/evening beverage?
    Bourbon or rye.

    2) Peanut butter or jam?
I agree with an above answer, why “or”? I don’t put them together anymore. We have a local jam-maker who makes an awesome strawberry-Grand Marnier jam.

    3) Weirdest word in your native language?
As cicely said, syzygy is weird, and I would add rhythm — neither one has any vowels in them.

    4) Favorite non-dirty word that sounds kinda dirty (in your native language).
    Masticate.

    5) General attitude towards table top gaming?
Is this just RPGs or does it count all games played around a table? Not that it really matters, since I find them all fun.

    6) Horses?
I don’t worship them, but I don’t mind them unless they are in a slow-moving trailer ahead of me on the road.

    7) Peas?
Not a fan, but I’ve not had them any way other than boiled from frozen. When I finally had brussels sprouts cooked the right way, I loved them, so I don’t deny that could happen with peas.

    8) Miracle WhhhiP?
    Yeeeaaaaah, no.

On another note, I have a Mystery Tech person (my blog has an all-powerful Oz!) who has been working to get this blog off the WordPress platform to another location where there will be a much smaller chance of any problems occurring. I’m being intentionally vague, but when it happens, I’ll explain more. From what xe tells me, it will still be a wordpress style blog (if I’m reading hir correctly, and I may very well NOT be), but it’ll be my own domain. Xe said there shouldn’t be any problems with people switching from here to over there (which I was worried about since I just got this set up and people are getting accustomed to it). Xe told me to go ahead and let everyone know this was happening soon. Probably in the next few days, I believe.

Hamsters are happier when they have toys:

Biologist Emily Bethell at Liverpool John Moores University and her colleagues wanted to test whether comfier living conditions would boost hamsters’ emotional states. It’s impossible to say what a hamster is actually feeling, but they, like other animals, definitely have emotional states that researchers can measure indirectly.

For the experiment, Bethell and her colleagues gave all her hamsters an initial taste of luxury: a cushy layer of aspen chips, two plastic hamster huts, a tiny hamster hammock, a wooden ledge, and a quiet plastic wheel with a solid floor. They also threw in four gnawing sticks for the hamsters to enjoy.

The researchers gave the hamsters a week to get used to their nice lifestyle, then changed things up. Half of the hamsters had a few more bonus items added to their cages. The other half reverted back to the default for lab hamsters: a thin layer of chips, a squeaky metal wheel, and a pair of cardboard tubes. After a few days, they switched.

    Optimistic Hamsters

The question that researchers wanted to answer, then, was what effect these housing conditions had had on the animals.

Scientists already know that environmental enrichment causes several other animal species to make more optimistic choices in so-called judgment bias tests. These tests present the animal with ambiguous information and measure whether they respond optimistically or pessimistically.

For the hamsters, the ambiguity came from a new drinking tube. In the weeks leading up to the experiment, the hamsters had been provided two tubes: one held sweet, delicious sugar water, while on the other of the enclosure, the other held an unpalatable liquid called quinine hydrochloride. Quickly the hamsters learned to drink from just the tasty water tube.

Then, Bethell and her colleagues replaced the familiar tubes with a third option, somewhere between the other two tubes. Would hamsters approach the new tube, assuming it held sugar water (optimistic) or avoid it because it probably held something unpalatable (pessimistic)?

It turned out that hamsters that had spent the prior week in an enriched cage were more likely to approach the empty drinking tubes than those who had their enrichment taken away. The results were published this week in the open-access journal Royal Society Open Science.

    Questionaire:
    1) Favorite nighttime/evening beverage? Beer.
Actual beer. Not that watered down pee so many americans seem to like. But I’m totally not a beer snob.
    .
    .
ok, fine. I’m totally a beer snob.

    2) Peanut butter or jam? Both. At the same time or alone, either is fine.

    3) Weirdest word in your native language?

    4) Favorite non-dirty word that sounds kinda dirty (in your native language).
Moist. (especially if you really draw it out.. mmmmooist)

    5) General attitude towards table top gaming?
Bestest thing EVAH! Sadly, I don’t get to do it as often as I would like. Which would like all day, every day.
(I’ll play anything. Poker, D&D, Warhammer, Munchin, Sorry, Monopoly, Apples To Apples, etc.)

    6) Horses?
I grew up on a cattle/horse ranch, so I love’em. For many years, instead of a dog, my best friend was a horse named “Booger”.

    7) Peas?
    Only if they are whirled.

    8) Miracle Whip?
I can’t say I love it, but I can’t stand actual mayonnaise so that is a good substitute.

  104. 241

gilliel: I stuck with rums I’ve tried. I’ve yet to try Havanna Club. Looking to change that, though…

    Questionnaire:
    Favorite nighttime/evening beverage?
So I’m obsessed with tea, and tisanes. I got a whole bunch of dried flowers (chamomile, rose bud, lavender, jasmine, Camelia sinensis flowers) and some vanilla honeybush that I blended together, and that makes a damn good non-alcoholic night-cap with added honey.

    Peanut butter or jam?
    Both. Together. On white bread.

    With Cape Cod potato chips.

Weirdest word in your native language? and Favorite non-dirty word that sounds kinda dirty (in your native language)
I have no idea. Never thought about it. Hm…

General attitude towards table top gaming?
Cool enough. I enjoy Blackjack. More of a puzzle person, though.

    Horses?
    Wonderful animals.

    Peas?
    Nah. I’m good.

    Miracle WhhhiP?
I hate mayonnaise and miracle whip. Admittedly, I’ve never had homemade mayonnaise, but still… the store stuff in nasty.

You know what’s screwed up, though? I lost my taste for mayonnaise because of a movie. Ever heard of Undercover Brother? If you can watch that film and still like mayonnaise… I don’t know… they do a great job of making it out to be the grossest, most disgusting thing in the world. And it worked… on me, at least…

I’m talking about a real tea counter, featuring a variable temperature tea kettle and authentic Japanese and Chinese looseleaf teas with the right brewing sets and such…

  105. 244

Nathan, I would love a tea counter!

    Questionnaire:

Favorite evening beverages – decaf tea, preferably Irish Breakfast, Lady Grey, or chai, or for alcohol, Beringer white Zinfandel, usually. Sometimes beer (Trader José or Corona) or a gin & tonic.

PB or jam? Orange marmalade, and that but rarely. The rest of the family eat all the PB&J so I don’t have to.

Weirdest word? I’ll have to think about that.

Table-top gaming? Not for me, I burned out on that years ago, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Horses? Lovely to look at, scary to get too close to.

Peas? Canned are an abomination, frozen are for emergencies, fresh are okay, I prefer sugar snap or snow pea pods

Miracle Whip? An abomination unto Nuggan, to be shunned.

Anything else you want to know? I’ll be in the pillow fort with Hobbes if anyone needs me.

  106. 247

One cold dish that’s like staple on buffets in Germany is “ham rolls” They can be delicious. A good cooked ham, a little mayonaise and fresh aspargus. But the standard variety is the cheapest ham of all, lots of mayo (sometimes even Miracle Whip (that’s btw a word my brain will always pronounce German) and canned aspargus.
But I will confess that I have a soft spot for canned peas. But you must not heat them.

Anyone ever try canned potatoes? They’re actually slightly more than edible (but quite a distance from ‘good’). The main drawback is the amount of sodium.

    8) Miracle Whip?

As far as I’m concerned, pretty much the only time eating canned vegetables is appropriate is when one is on a long ocean voyage or similar.

What if the characters and plot of Fury Road were set on Waterworld (none of the Waterworld characters, just the world itself)?

But that’s the best part of Waterwold! Imagine every character in Mad Max played be Kevin (Acting? What’s “acting”?) Costner. That would be hilarious. (BTW, I still haven’t seen Fury Road).
What’s funny is that Waterworld was intended as a Mad Max rip-off with the opportunity to create a water-park like Disney does with its franchises. That didn’t happen (Costner, you’re batting a thousand), but imagine if that was crossed with Mad Max – you’d see a kid with inflatable cartoon-themed armbands screaming “I live. I die. why sometimes I seem to capitalize weird things

I was wondering. Never got to ask you.

    i prefer P&P

D&D or DSA? I’m occasionally play German CRPGs, and I really liked the older DSA rulesets. At least the portions that were in the manuals – the full English translations for DSA started coming out only in the mid-2000s, when the game was changed to be more similar to D&D and later made more similar to other CRPGs (which in my mind ruined the uniqueness of the earlier rulesets).

I don’t care much for broccoli, but cauliflower can be delicious when brushed with the mixture of whites and yolk (don’t know if it has a separate name), covered in bread crumbs and put into on oven. Easy, quick, filling and tasty.

Ok, so we’re getting a lot of rain…again. We’ve been getting drenched for an hour or two for the last several days. We’re currently under a severe thunderstorm warning. I’d really like it to see this weather go west. Maybe hit up Texas and cool things down so that pool water doesn’t feel like swimming in pee. Then maybe head its way to the NW region of the US.
One good thing though-when the rain is over, things will have cooled off considerably and I can walk Krystal.

  123. 271

@YOB- mind if I inquire what part of Texas? I grew up just south of the Metroplex and am likely to move back to somewhere that isn’t Houston eventually.

Grrrr…just saw this ad on Craigslist:

-that does not drink behind the bar/nor does drugs
-knows how to clean bathrooms and knows how to sweep/mop
    -lives in Pensacola
-has experience in the bar world
-knows how to talk to customers
-looking for someone long-term & who can work busy dayshifts
    -females only
    -not anyone younger than 30

So I just sent an email to whoever put that ad up (presumably the manager or owner of the bar) informing them that it’s against Florida law to discriminate based on sex. I hit send before I reread it and saw the age discrimination too. It’s fucking hard enough to get a job without people blatantly discriminating like this.

A story from the neverending nature documentary in my backyard: This evening, I went out to investigate a lot of noise and discovered that it was –

A Cooper’s hawk in the jacaranda, perched on a branch over the bird feeders, who was being scolded by a mockingbird. I got a good look before the hawk finally decided it had had enough and took off for points south, but wow, what a sight. Seriously, between the cars, the birds and Squirrel Nemesis (who tried to climb the feeder pole this morning), it’s all drama around here.

  131. 291

@YOB, well it was three states, a wedding and two jobs ago, but only 5 years, give or take a bit. 🙂

@Anne, it’s all sparrows here, but I got lucky and saw a peregrine falcon in the eves of my building once (and yes I live in a high rise, only thing affordable around here) I kinda miss the blue jays vs the mockingbird vs the squirrels. Made for decent after dinner entertainment.

  132. 294

Rawnaeris, from what I understand, peregrines do quite well in big cities – there’s at least one pair nesting on a tall building in downtown LA, and some in New York. They’re encouraged because they help keep the pigeons under control. In fact I believe some cities are introducing peregrines for that reason.

I just checked, and peregrine falcons are cliff nesters, like the pigeons (rock doves) that inhabit cities. That explains why they do so well around tall buildings.

Sorry about the data dump – the Elder Daughter’s bird enthusiasm is apparently catching.

As I said back in the winter to east-coasters, I’d love to take some of your temperatures and put them up here. The winter was too warm, and this summer is too cold, and all the while I’m listening to people elsewhere have unusually cold winters and unusually hot summers. This place is getting all too temperate – though we’ll probably have some lovely weather in September.

I don’t think I ever filled in the old questionnaire. So here’s my attempt at the latest one:

    1) Favorite nighttime/evening beverage? Beer for most occasions, but single malt for special ones.

    2) Peanut butter or jam? Jam, but usually I’d have honey.

    3) Weirdest word in your native language?
Cleave – it means itself and its opposite.

    4) Favorite non-dirty word that sounds kinda dirty (in your native language).

I’ll go Python and say Wankel Rotary engine. (I know it’s a phase rather than a word but 😛

    5) General attitude towards table top gaming?
Used to play, but don’t have the time now.

    6) Horses?
I have ridden one many years ago. They’re pretty, but stupid.

    7) Peas?
    My least favourite vegetable

    8) Miracle Whip?

No! No! No! I’m not a fan of vinegar based sauces full stop.

BTW, I think I have FossilFishy’s email. Should I drop him a line in case he wants to join us? Or has someone else let him know?

Maybe one day I can play again, though I doubt I’ll ever get a group like this again. My most favourite part of the DSA universe is the Goddess Raja, goddess of lust, pleasure and excess, though always consensually.

    Weather
This far, June and July were either heat waves or cold spells. And thanks to the heat wave part we have a wasp plague. Usually the fuckers only bother folks in late August/SEptember, when they need meat to feed their young. June/July they usually find food out in nature, but since everything got burned into hay, they come to us for food.

Palestinian infant burned to death in West Bank arson attack; IDF blames ‘Jewish terror’

A one-and-a-half year-old Palestinian infant was burned to death and three of his family members were seriously wounded late Thursday night after a house was set on fire in the village of Douma, near Nablus.

According to reports, settlers were those who set the house on fire after targeting it with firebombs and graffiti. The Israeli military called the attack “Jewish terror,” while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials echoed the claim, vehemently condemning the attack.

6 stabbed at Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade by ultra-Orthodox Jewish assailant

Meet the first new canine species in 150 years.

The golden jackal, which lives in East Africa and Eurasia, is actually two distantly related species—and one of them is a new species of wolf, a new study says. (Also see “Wolves Identified by Unique Howls, May Help Rare Species.”)

Dubbed the African golden wolf, it’s the first new species of canid—a group that includes wolves, coyotes, and jackals—discovered in 150 years. Africa is also home to two other wolf species, the gray wolf and Ethiopian wolf. (Read “Africa’s Last Wolves” in National Geographic magazine.)

Though golden jackals look mostly the same—the Eurasian animals are slightly smaller than the African ones, with a narrower skull and slightly weaker teeth—in-depth analysis of their DNA revealed two species that have evolved separately for millennia.

I love the more realistic mechanics of DSA. In D&D higher level characters effectively become gods that can only be harmed by other gods. In DSA you remain vulnerable. Not as much as a new character, but you can’t charge into fights without thinking.

GOP is proposing a bill to protect student accused of sexual assault:
Do students get a fair hearing? An effort to change how colleges handle sexual assaults.

Some key elements of the House bill:

    • Students alleging sexual violence could decide whether to report the incident to law enforcement or not. If a serious crime were alleged and the student preferred not to involve police in an investigation, campus officials would not launch an internal investigation. But they could provide protections to the student, such as requiring the accused to avoid the accuser.

i.e. the old “if it happened, why didn’t you go to the police defense?” will now be the law of the land.

    • All students involved, both those reporting an assault and those defending themselves against the charges, would have the right to hire lawyers at their own expense. Both sides could ask questions of witnesses.

GOP looking out for the rich. I mean, we can’t have the spoiled brats of some billionaire be subjected to the same justice as the hoi polloi.

    • Those accused would have the right to know the charges they’re facing, and see the evidence against them.

    • Colleges could choose what standard of evidence to use. For several years, a federal directive has held such campus proceedings to a “preponderance of evidence” standard, less stringent than would be required in a judicial proceeding and less than many colleges had previously used.

Essentially erasing all previous attempt to make sure the burden doesn’t fall squarely on the victim.

    Biped’s Broccoli-Potato-Onion-Cheese-Ham Soup

Okay, off the top of my head… Rough chop the onions and saute over low heat in a bit of butter/olive oil until translucent. Add some fresh garlic if you have it and saute with onion. Do not brown. Rough chop the potatoes and broccoli and put in soup pot. Add the sauteed onion. Add water just to cover veggies. If you have some veggie stock on hand, use that instead of water. Add salt. Potatoes absorb salt. If you didn’t use fresh garlic with the onion, add some powdered garlic now. Not garlic salt. Also some thyme, either fresh or dried. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer until the broccoli is soft when poked with a fork. The potatoes should also be soft. Remove from heat and allow to cool a bit so you don’t scorch you paws on the next step.

Using a blender or whatever tool or appliance you have, puree the soup.

After the soup is pureed and returned to pot add grated cheese. Simmer to melt cheese. Stir frequently. You don’t want cheese sticking to the bottom of the pot. This will thicken the soup. You can add water or milk to thin if it gets too thick.

Chop the ham and add to the pot. When it is heated taste for seasonings. You can add pepper if desired and spice it up at will.

    Enjoy!
