Marvel releases their Phase 3 movie plans, which include Black Panther and Captain Marvel

Guess what? Marvel’s cinematic universe is about get to get an infusion of some much, much, much needed diversity!

They’re planning on Captain Marvel!

And Black Panther!

Woo-fucking-Hoo!

During a “secret” event for fans and press today in Los Angeles at Disney’s El Capitan theater, Marvel Studios melted fans’ brains when it revealed titles and release dates for all nine Marvel Phase 3 films.

Following Avengers 2, the studio will be releasing:

  • Captain America: Civil War (May 6th, 2016);
  • Dr. Strange (Nov. 4th, 2016);
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (May 5th, 2017);
  • Thor: Ragnarok (July 18th, 2017);
  • Black Panther (November 3, 2017);
  • Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1 (May 4th, 2018);
  • Captain Marvel (July 6th, 2018);
  • Inhumans (November 2nd, 2018);
  • Avengers: Infinty War, Part 2 (May 3rd, 2019).

The presentation began with a deliberate and hilarious bit of misdirection, as it was first announced thatCaptain America 3 would be subtitled “Serpent Society.” Obviously, that would have contradicted all recent rumors suggesting a battle between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers influenced by Marvel’s Civil War crossover event. However, midway through the presentation, Marvel corrected itself, revealing “Civil War” as Robert Downey, Jr. and Chris Evans were brought out on stage for the announcement.

Meanwhile, 42 actor Chadwick Boseman was announced as the lead in Black Panther, introduced to fans formally by Robert Downey, Jr. and Chris Evans during a skit in which Downey, Jr. and Evans pretended to fight, then demanded Boseman pick sides. Cue wild speculation on how Black Panther will* officially debut in the MCU during Cap 3. It’s worth noting, by the way, that in the comics, Black Panther is from the fictional African nation of Wakanda, notable among other things for being the source of the Vibranium used to make Captain America’s shield.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wasn’t familiar with Chadwick Boseman, and I imagine others might be similarly in the dark, so here he is:

IMDB has a list of his movie and tv appearances to date.

Oh, and of course this means that Marvel will be putting one of its biggest black heroes on the screen before DC’s Cyborg in 2020. Yes, the fanboy in me is squeaming right now!

Someone was wrong and ignorant on the internet

I recently wrote about the comments to Ashley Miller’s post How the Morehouse Football Team ruined Dear White People and proved its point.  In that article, she spoke about her experience watching the movie Dear White People and how her experience was ruined by the homophobic comments of various members of the audience who turned out to be members of the Morehouse football team.  I already wrote about the multiple commenters who made excuses for the players, or those who engaged in their own homophobia, or those who dismissed the concerns of LGBT people.  A recent commenter really took the cake for me though.

Commenter ‘Crystal says:

The comments which compare LGBT community’s struggle to civil rights for Blacks, are deplorable and a slap in my face as a black woman. The LGBT struggle doesn’t compare in any way shape or form to the struggle for black civil rights. If you do not believe me, you need to invest in a lot of literature addressing the history of the TransAtlantic Slave Trade and the Civil Rights Movement. My skin color can NEVER change. It is apparent when I first walk into a room full of my white colleagues and peers. I do not have White Privilege or protection for my protection and can never “pass” for white. There are many blacks who are like me, and there were much more during the civil rights movement. Btw, there is a great article on Yahoo about a white father raising his bi-racial son and he discusses the things that he will never experience as a white man, yet his son will. Check it out because it illustrates, in a nutshell, why the struggle of gay persons and black persons, are not the same. Being gay is not something that is always noticeable or apparent, even in so called effeminate men or masculine women. Granted some people can pass for white, but that is not common to all black people as many of us simply cannot. Some effeminate men may look like and dress as women and more masculine women may dress as and look like men. However, all gay men and women are not transgender or transsexual, who admittedly, are a group of people that still face a lot of discrimination in terms of employment and housing and are historically relegated to finding jobs and housing in certain areas. The fact that many gay people and advocates choose to not accept this and ignore this is ignorant and shameful. How dare you compare civil rights struggle of blacks of to that of gay rights. Homosexuals have NEVER been subjected the terror that scores of blacks faced in terms of the lynchings, brutal beatings, maimings, and unjustified killings that blacks endured during slavery and after. And guess what blacks are still experiencing a modern day form of slavery and racism, known as institutional slavery. This fact evidences that one’s supposed sexual identity based on outward or physical appearance is something that CAN be changed if necessary. You CAN blend and appear straight although you may not be because many times a gay person’s outward appearance (the way they dress and talk, etc.) is the same as a straight person. Most black people can NEVER do that. BTW, in case some commenters missed it, the Morehouse football team were cheering at a racist man beating a gay man who planted an unwanted kiss on him. Not at the fact that a black man was being beaten. The only thing the football team saw was that the man was gay. The team did not see color. Yet, the OP is incensed by the fact that the football team were not aware and disturbed that it was a gay man being beaten?! Why would they? This is what some of the commenters are calling out. In their view, the struggle of straight black people during slavery and civil rights is inherently different than theirs. And I get that. My issue with the blog, is that I wonder what would the OP have preferred instead? That the team yelled racial slurs and showed their outrage at the beating by antagonizing any white person, like herself, viewing the movie or crossing their paths once the movie ended? I don’t get what she want or expect them to do. Arguing with folks about why they are so wrong about homosexuality is almost like me arguing with someone who is racist. I cannot change their views, but I can as an intelligent human being pick and choose who I debate. In others words I choose not to engage with those that I feel are uneducated, ignorant, and not on my level. You can be racist, just stay in your lane and don’t put your hands on me.

I was struck by her remarkable inability to empathize with the plight of LGBT people.  She finds the comparison of the struggle of LGBT people to the Civil Rights Movement to be deplorable. Clearly she doesn’t understand the underlying reason for the struggle for LGBT rights, which is to achieve equality; the same damn thing as the Civil Rights Movement! Does she not realize that LGBT people have only recently begun to have the right to marry in the United States, which parallels the struggle to legalize interracial marriage?  Does she not realize how often black people have demanded to be represented in music, media, and literature, and how that is a similar struggle of LGBT people?  Is she clueless that LGBT people, like black people, have been subjected to bullying, harassment, and violence simply because of who they are? The efforts to include race as a category in anti-discrimination laws mirrors the efforts to seek protection for LGBT people in the workplace…does she not realize that? There are so many more parallels.  You know what they all have in common:

Discrimination and oppression of a group of people because of who they are.

When she speaks of her skin color never changing, she hints that sexuality can be changed.  Where is the evidence of this?  She provides none.  As I said in the comments at Ashley’s blog, I never woke up one day and decided I’ve love to start sleeping with men. When puberty hit, my hormones went one direction. My first attraction to a man that I can remember is my gym coach when I lived in El Paso, TX back in 1987. I was around 12 years old. I had never heard the word gay or homosexual. I didn’t know anyone who was gay. I had no role models. I couldn’t talk to anyone about how I felt.  Do you have any idea how lonely that can be? How isolated an existence that was? To not be able to share your thoughts with anyone for fear of being labeled a freak? That’s part of what homophobia is like.  This lasted for around 8 years. I tried to be “normal” and date women. I tried to fit in and be what society said I was supposed to be. You know what?

It. Didn’t. Work.

Why?

Because I’m gay.  I was trying to fit into a narrow box that society dictates for people. This narrow, unyielding box couldn’t accommodate me bc it wasn’t for me. I couldn’t fit into something that I wasn’t. This is one of the many problems with patriarchal gender roles.  They set these rules up for the way men and women are supposed to act and anyone outside the confines of those walls is a deviant. Those deviants are subjected to harassment and oppression.  Not for doing anything to anyone. Not for causing harm. Not for causing destruction.  Simply for existing on their own terms.

Existing on your own terms…heh.

That sounds mighty similar to the efforts of black people to be recognized as full human beings with all the attendant rights. It sounds similar because it is similar.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to claim that the Gay Rights Movement is exactly like the Civil Rights Movement. I know they’re not identical.  But there are strong similarities.  The desired outcome is extremely similar:  equality for each group and recognition that they have the right to exist in society on their own terms.

This is one of many things Crystal needs to learn.

There was one other thing that really pissed me off about her comment.

Homosexuals have NEVER been subjected the terror that scores of blacks faced in terms of the lynchings, brutal beatings, maimings, and unjustified killings that blacks endured during slavery and after.

She’s speaking from a position of incredible ignorance.  Part of my response to her included a link to the University of Minnesota’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies:

In the 1930’s, there began in Germany a persecution of male homosexuals that was, like that of Jews, the worst in their respective histories. Lesbians, since they could contine to breed children, presented no practical reproductive problems to the Nazi state.

The Nazis’ murder of some homosexuals started earlier than that of the Jews with the murders of Ernest Roehm and other brown shirts in his paramilitary group known as the SA, although the major reason for these murders was to eliminate a potentially rival force to the SS. Roehm was a major Nazi leader, second only to Hitler as they rose to power in the 20’s and early 30’s. He and his cadre of “brownshirts” were homosexuals, which was not a problem at the beginning for Hitler, but later did prove an embarrassment and a threat. Roehm and other SA leaders were murdered without warning in a famous blood purge which was led by Himmler and other SS officers at the instigation of Hitler and began on June 30, 1934, which has been called “The Night of Long Knives.”

In writing about the Holocaust, the “gay genocide” has often been either a taboo subject too delicate to touch upon, a topic obscured by other issues, or simply omitted. However there are wellresearched books  for example, John Lauritsen and David Thorstad, The Early Homosexual Rights Movement: 18641935 [New York: Times Change Press, 19741; Heinz Heger, The Men with the Pink Triangle [Boston: Alyson Publications, 19801. Richard Plant’s, The Pink Triangle: The Nazi War Against Homosexuals is one of the most outstanding, clearly and eloquently written.

Controversy surrounds every aspect of this genocide, even the label “genocide.” Since gays could “pass” (unlike Jews or Gypsies), most survived the war. If they remained celibate or “in the closet,” they could elude the Nazis and survive. Because they were difficult to detect, a considerable number were never rounded up. Thus, there are strong arguments not to call this a genocide.

On the other hand, there are strong arguments for this to be seen as a genocide: first, the stigmatization of homosexuals as “vermin,” “plague,” “cancerous ulcer,” and “a tumor’ is racist and the kind of dehumanization that enables genocide to occur. Under Himmler’s direction, the ferocity of attack gained impetus to seek out and destroy or sterilize every homosexual the Nazis could find. By the United Nations definition, these acts of sterilization fall under the category of limiting births, thus genocide. It is not an easy decision, but overall I personally adopt a nongenocide label, though it could fall under the rubric of what I would call genocidal acts. As for a planned, systematic genocide, I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that there was none. Gays were victims of the Third Reich and therefore belong in any Holocaust museum, but I would conclude that gays were victims of a genocidal mentality, and not of outright genocide. [See DEFINITION OF GENOCIDE for more on controversies in defining genocide, including the differing opinion of the editor of the EncyclopediaEd.]

Overall, we can estimate the number of males convicted of homosexuality from 19331944 at between 50,000 to 63,000. The number of homosexuals incarcerated in the Nazi concentration camps is not known, much less the number who died there. Rudiger Lautmann in his Gesellschaft und Homosexualitat: Seminar [Frankfurt: Suhrkamp, 19771, whose figures are used by Plant and other writers, estimates that somewhere between 5,000 to 15,000 homosexuals perished behind the barbedwire fences. These were victims who were labeled and processed as homosexuals. A figure of about 10,000 homosexuals is the one accepted by most scholars (although figures are thrown about wildly and estimates run as high as Jean Boisson’s one million dead.) Gay leaders and writers insist on higher figures in order to legitimate their claim of special pleading. Yet, why indeed are 10,000 killed less tragic than one million? In the aftermath of the Holocaust, numbers themselves seem to lose their significance. In any case, the major Holocaust institution in the USA, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, recognizes the “gay genocide.”

Did Hitler despise homosexuals? Was he ashamed of his own homosexual or asexual identity? These are areas of psychohistory that are beyond known knowledge. My own feelings are that Hitler was asexual in the traditional sense and had bizarre sexual fetishes. All these things were of course kept highly secret from the German people. But there were other political considerations. Perhaps Hans Peter Bleuel [Sex and Society in Nazi Germany, New York: Lippincott, 19731 summarizes the issue best: “Hitler’s misgivings about homosexuality stemmed primarily from selfinterest. His objection to it as a vice or symptom of effeminacy was only secondary. The main danger, as he saw it, was that it would infiltrate the political leadership and constitute itself a secret Order of the Third Sex. He was also concerned at the thought that population growth might be curbed by the heterosexual abstinence of those affected.”

The Nazi purge of homosexuals from their own ranks was only the beginning. On June 23, 1935, the first anniversary of the Roehm killings, the Nazis began a legal campaign against homosexuals by adding to paragraph 175 another law, 175a, which created ten new criminal offenses including kisses between men, embraces, even homosexual fantasies. The Gestapo and the SS, under the notoriously antihomosexual leadership of Heinrich Himmler, became involved in a steppedup campaign to work gays to death in the camps. Himmler is quoted as follows: “Just as we today have gone back to the ancient Germanic view of the question of marriage mixing different races, so too in our judgment of homosexuality  a symptom of degeneracy that could destroy our race  we must return to the guiding Nordic principle: extermination.” Reich Legal Director, Hans Frank, commented on the new penal code: “Particular attention should be addressed to homosexuality, which is clearly expressive of a disposition opposed to the normal national community … Homosexual behavior, in particular, merits no mercy.”

If anyone can read that and still claim that gay people haven’t suffered from the kind of terror that black people did during slavery and after…they are a vile, disgusting human being with a shattered moral compass. I want nothing to do with them.  But wait, that’s hardly the end of the discrimination faced by gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender people.

What about the homophobia embedded in the country of Uganda, where the government has tried to pass a Kill the Gays bill? This is a country where

Being gay, gay “touching,” discussing homosexuality and broadcasting material that sways public opinion about the current state of homophobia are all offences punishable by sentences up to life in prison, leaving queers legally powerless and socially silenced.

What about the brutal, bloody horror of gay life in Putin’s Russia?

Ever since virulently homophobic Russian President Vladimir Putin pushed through a law effectively outlawing openly gay people, the country’s LGBTQ community has, predictably, been plagued by violence.  Now a study published in Harvard University’s Health and Human Rights journal confirms what myriad horrific anecdotes suggest: Gay people in Russia are being beaten, raped, and murdered at record rates—and the government is doing little to stop it.

What about the fact that a disproportionate amount of hate violence in the United States is directed at trans women of color?

2012 saw the 4th highest murder rate of LGBTQ and HIV-affected people (LGBTQH) in history, according to the annual Hate Violence Report released by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP). The report analyzes statistics collected in 18 states about survivors and victims’ age, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, and type of violence experienced in order to track trends in the violence directed at the LGBTQH community.

The overall LGBTQH homicide rate decreased by 16.7% from 2011, which had the highest homicide rate of all time. The overall rate of violence inflicted on LGBTQH people remained relatively consistent, with a 4% decrease from 2011. Some of the groups most likely to experience hate violence included transgender people (particularly transgender women), people of color (particularly transgender people of color), and gay men. Young people, homeless people, and people with disabilities were also disproportionately represented. In all reported homicides involving transgender people, the victims were women.

The only way one could make the claim that LGBT people don’t (or haven’t) face(d) the same kind of horrific violence faced by blacks is if you’re totally ignorant of what the fuck you’re talking about. In which case, you probably should just shut the fuck up and go educate your damn self.

Someone was wrong and ignorant on the internet

Mr. “I want to burn gays alive” believes in Ebola zombies. No, really, he does.

I have no desire, no urge, no fiber among all the fibers of my being (and there’s a lot) to burn anyone alive (I will admit, in my darker moments, to thinking violent thoughts.  Who doesn’t? It’s human.  But my thoughts stop there. I don’t wish harm on anyone, and I have no desire to bring harm to others).  Sadly, there are humans who not only wish violence on others, they want to be the ones who perpetrate those acts of violence. Russian actor, screenwriter, and director Ivan Okhlobystin is one such person.

Last year, in front of a packed audience, Okhlobystin stated “I myself, would shove all live gays into a furnace”.

A popular Russian actor who starred in a TV sitcom similar to “Scrubs” told a packed audience that he would be happy to burn all living gay people alive, by himself. “I myself would shove all live gays into [a] furnace,” Ivan Okhlobystin (image, above) told his audience in Novosibirsk, Russia’s third-largest city. “This is Sodom and Gomorrah, I as a beliver in God can not treat this indifferently, this is a live threat to my kids!” “I do not want my kids to think that faggots are normal,” Okhlobystin, who is 47 and a member of the Russian Orthodox Church and a former Russian Orthodox priest, said, according to Queer Russia. “This is lavender fascism. If a person can not choose someone of an opposite sex for procreation – this is an overt sign of mental abnormality, so they should be denied voting rights.” Attendees, according to Russian news site NEWS.NG.ru paid up to 2500 rubles — about $76 U.S. dollars — to hear the actor, director, writer, and one-time presidential candidate speak in what was billed as “Spiritual Discussions.”

(I wonder how he would react if he had a child who was LGBT. Would he throw them into a furnace? I’m sure he thinks he could never have an LGBT child, so its probably not even crossed his mind.)

There is so much to unpack here. From Okhlobystin’s belief that homosexuality is somehow harmful to children, to the belief that fighting for LGBT equality is fascism, it is clear he has no respect for human rights, nor a grasp of human sexuality. Homosexuality is not a mental abnormality (and even if it were an abnormality, that still wouldn’t be grounds to deny LGBT people the right to vote). It is a healthy, natural expression of human sexuality, which is far more expansive than Okhlobystin understands. His point about ‘choosing someone of the opposite sex for procreation’ is just bizarre. It reduces human relationships, so often founded on love, mutual respect, and a desire to spend life together…down to fucking for babies. A lot of people want to have children. A lot of people don’t want to have children. But even among both groups, there are people who enter into romantic relationships because they enjoy being a specific person. They want to build a relationship with that person.  And every adult should be free to pursue any consensual relationship they choose.  That is one of the most basic of human rights, and Okhlobystin would deny LGBT people that right. Simply because he believes his god is repulsed by two women kissing. His virulent homophobia is right at home with the culture of bigotry cultivated by Russian President Putin.

Not content to remain ignorant about human sexuality, it appears Okhlobystin wants to showcase his ignorance about basic human biology and epidemiology (admittedly, this isn’t something a lay person would necessarily know about, but it’s not too difficult to click the ON button on a computer and Google your way to some basic knowledge):

Okhlobystin, who served as a Russian Orthodox priest before being suspended from the Church at his own request in 2010, is notorious for his vocal intolerance of Russia’s LGBT community and his provocative statements on other topics.

Last week he suggested that some victims of the Ebola virus were turning into zombies, explaining that he had heard of many cases in which those who died from the virus were mysteriously resurrected several days later. In case there was any doubt, the actor added that he “was not joking” and that he had purchased a crossbow, “just in case.”

I wonder if he’s familiar with the term ‘credulous’?

Survivor Stories: Antonius Wiriadjaja

The United States has an epidemic of gun violence.  Each year, more than 30,000 people are killed by firearms.  More than half of those are the result of firearm related suicides.  Discussions about gun control often center on reducing the numbers of firearm related deaths.  Lost in that discussion, however, is that many people have had their lives irrevocably altered by firearms.  They may not have died, but they have been affected by the horrific levels of gun violence in the US. In an ongoing series at Rolling Stone, the survivors of gun violence speak out.  Today’s gun violence survivor is Antonius Wiriadjaja:

‘Margarita with a straw’ aims to combat homophobia in India

Until late last year, Section 377 of India’s penal code was a thing of the not-too-distant-past (the Delhi High Court suspended the law back in 2009).  Under that law, homosexual sex was punishable by up to 10 years in jail.  Effectively, the law criminalized sex between people of the same-sex. Unfortunately, the Indian government thinks it has the right to legislate consensual sexual encounters, and in December 2013, India’s highest court overturned the lower court ruling, thus reinstating Section 377. Following the ruling, activists took to the streets in protest:

To protest the decision, hundreds of activists and supporters donned black armbands protested in India’s biggest cities. Campaigners also urged people to write to the judges of the Supreme Court, expressing their feelings.

L Ramakrishnan, who works for a public health NGO and who volunteers with Orinam, a Chennai-based rights collective which organised the campaign, said they had received letters in English, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Gujarati, Telugu and Tamil. “We wanted to show how this decision impacted people without it getting lost in legal jargon,” he said.

He said many young people had taken the decision to come out in the aftermath of the 2009 decision by the Delhi High Court. Now they found themselves criminalised, he said.

Campaigners believe the decision will put up to 75m Indians at right of harassment. The threat of discrimination and harassment is particularly high in the country’s more conservative smaller towns and villages.

In this newly inflamed climate of homophobia comes ‘Margarita with a straw’, a movie that serves as an artistic protest of the draconian laws against homosexuality in India.

Modern India is walking slowly towards a general acceptance of homosexuals and lesbians. Shonali Bose in her new film,“Margarita, With a Straw,” tries to pick up the pace. The film, which premiered and won the NETPAC award at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this year, is about a teenager with cerebral palsy who is unabashed about her sexuality, much to the horror of her middle-class, conservative mother.

Bose, who identifies herself as a bisexual, says the film comes from two personal experiences – that of exploring her own sexuality and the experiences of her cousin, who suffered from cerebral palsy. Bose said she hopes that the film contributes towards the debate over Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which forbids homosexual sex, and eventually sexual legitimacy for homosexuals, bisexuals and lesbians.

“I am ready for right-wing protests when my film releases. Bring them on. As long as people can see the film and talk about these issues, I am ready to face it,” she said in an interview.

India’s Supreme Court has refused to decriminalize homosexuality. Last year, it overruled a decision by a lower court to declare sexual intercourse between same-sex partners as legal, saying it was up to the Indian parliament to repeal such a law.

Homosexuality is still considered taboo by most Indians, and that attitude is reflected in the country’s mainstream cinema, which hardly touches on these topics, choosing instead to focus on fluffy comedies and cheesy action flicks.

In “Margarita, With a Straw”, we see the story of Laila, a teenager with cerebral palsy who falls in love with another woman. This, said Bose, represents an attempt to understand the situation from all sides.

“In the film, Laila’s mother has great difficulty coming to terms with her daughter’s sexuality, and when the film screened in Toronto, I had so many Indians coming up to me and telling me they loved it, so I know I have struck a chord somewhere,” said Bose, who worked on the script for two years.

“We always look at the disabled with so much empathy, so hopefully when you are presented with a prickly topic like sexuality from their point of view, audiences might be more accepting than if it was told from the point of view of a normal person,” she said.

Here’s the trailer:

Hopefully ‘Margarita with a straw’ can help chip away at the cultural taboos and homophobia in India.

Florida man ‘lucky he didn’t kill somebody’ trying out concrete-piercing rifle ammo downtown

According to WESH, Orlando city leaders received video from a whistleblower of a man target practicing in a building that Crusader’s Contracting was hired to demolish. The whistleblower said that his boss “had many guns on the job site and would frequently shoot things in the basement and other areas in the building.”

Detectives were “working to figure out charges, if any,” an Orlando Police Department spokesperson told WESH. “At best, they will have Improper Exhibition. Punishable by up to 1 year in jail.”

Zach Hudson of Defensive Tactics Solutions, who spent 30 years as a police officer, pointed out that firing this type of weapon in an urban setting was extremely dangerous.

“[It is] very, very foolish,” Hudson remarked after seeing the video. “He is lucky he didn’t kill somebody.”

“This is a military grade weapon. This is a round designed to travel up to 800 meters. You are talking about a round that can go through concrete.”

Hudson also observed that the firing rate of the rifle suggested that it had been modified to be fully automatic.

“If those weapons has been modified in any way that becomes a federal crime,” he said.

I’d like to know how this guy obtained a military grade weapon, and why he thought he needed it. So many gun owners will claim they need guns to protect themselves or their families, but these people are not serving in the military or living in a warzone. They don’t need powerful equipment like this.  What’s the limit on weapons like this? The NRA wants no limits on the type of guns people can possess, but how far will they take that?  Should everyone be allowed to own their own ICBM? Should we all be allowed to own a tactical nuke?  That’s the logical implication of arguing that people ought to be able to arm themselves. If you don’t think people should be able to own a nuke, you need to explain why they can’t have it, but can have other weapons. This applies all the way down to a simple handgun.

Indiana dad cleaning gun shoots 9-month-old son in the head, and himself in the leg

WTHR reported that 31-year-old John Hambaugh, III, was in his kitchen cleaning his gun on Wednesday when the weapon discharged. The round traveled through Hambaugh’s left thigh and into his 9-month-old son’s head, who was thought to be standing next to his father.

Neighbor Dawn Crecelius recalled that she felt helpless when the child’s mother ran out of the home with the boy.

“She was screaming, ‘He shot my baby! He shot my baby!’ and she was cradling the baby,” Crecelius said. “What do you do? What do you do? Cause there’s– you can’t fix that. You can’t help that. If he’s choking, you can help that. If he’s cut, you can help that. You can’t help a baby that’s been shot in the head.”

Hambaugh and his 9-month-old son were transported to Community Howard Regional Hospital in Kokomo. Hambaugh was expected to make a full recovery, but the child was listed in critical condition on Thursday.

 A 3 year old Montana child is dead because of an irresponsible gun owner

NBC Montana reports that Galen Hawk was charged on Friday with negligent homicide after killing Lonato Moran-Allen on Wednesday night. Bail has been set at $100,000.

According to court documents, Moran-Allen was pretending to shoot Hawk with a toy gun as he ran away inside of a Ninepipes-area home. Hawk reportedly pointed his handgun at Moran-Allen in response and the gun went off killing the boy.

According to Hawk, he didn’t think his gun was loaded and that he and the boy had only been “playing.” Hawk told investigators that he had spent the evening drinking whiskey and alcoholic lemonade prior to the shooting.

Following the shooting, Hawk attempted CPR on the boy  before rushing him to a hospital in Ronan where he was later died.

That poor young boy. He’s dead because this asshole treated a gun like it’s a toy and irresponsibly failed to ensure it wasn’t loaded.  Sadly, our culture teaches people that guns are fun and they’re toys to play with. Plus there are no requirements to be trained in the use of guns before purchasing them.

“A young guy with a gun who doesn’t care about life.”

30 year old Perla Aviva and her husband had a regular every other Sunday routine.  Posole with the Raiders game. Tragically, this routine came to an end recently, after a gunman took the life of Aviva:

The tradition ended tragically this past weekend as the couple was returning home from Supermercado Mi Tierra on International Boulevard, about a mile from their East Oakland home. Police say an angry motorist sprayed gunfire into their black 1998 Toyota Camry, hitting 30-year-old Avina in the head as she sat in the front passenger seat.

Panicked, Gallegos drove the few short blocks to their Brookfield Village home to call for help, but Avina died in their driveway. A medical receptionist, Avina was the mother of four children ages 1 to 14.

“He was a coward with a gun,” 33-year-old Gallegos said with heavy eyes on Monday as he stared at the bullet-riddled Camry in their driveway. “A young guy with a gun who doesn’t care about life.”  As of Monday, police continued to hunt for the shooter and were trying to gather a description of the suspect and the suspect’s car.  The shooting happened about 12:30 p.m. as the couple drove in the southbound lanes of 98th Avenue, somewhere between the 400 to 600 blocks, police said.  Gallegos said details about what led up to the shooting were foggy, but he recalled another motorist not liking the way he drove and subsequent shots fired as the couple’s car was moving. When he realized his wife had been shot, he drove the short distance to their house, where authorities later responded and pronounced her dead, police said.

“I came to my home because I needed someone to call officers,” Gallegos said. A neighbor, Dwayne Jackson, 54, was standing outside across the street from the family’s home when Gallegos’ Camry sped by him.

“He pulled up really abrupt, halfway in the driveway and called to me,” Jackson said. “He said, ‘D, call 911. My wife’s been shot.’ We pulled her out of the car and I started giving her CPR, but I pretty much knew she was gone.”

This simultaneously saddens and angers me.  It saddens me because this woman, who was just trying to live her life and enjoy herself and her family, had her very existence snuffed out because of an irresponsible gun owner.  It saddens me because her husband and her four children will never know her loving embrace or hear her voice again. It angers me, bc yet again, someone had their hands on a weapon that should not have. It angers me, bc yet again, someone decided to take their anger and rage out on others through violent, and lethal means.  It also saddens and angers me bc this shit keeps happening. Again and again and again and again and again.  People are injured, maimed, and killed in tragedies like this. Lives are irrevocably shattered and lost.  Because of irresponsible gun owners. Because of a culture that glorifies guns. Because of a culture that fetishizes guns. Because of a culture that refuses to engage with the fact that gun violence permeates our society.

It’s depressingly easy to find cases of irresponsible gun owners.  The Florida man who shot his pregnant wife in the back of the head and claimed self-defense, only to reveal that he wanted to kill her is the latest example of someone who should never have been allowed to own a gun:

Investigators determined that an argument between Sinclair and his wife began at around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday in their bedroom. The suspect said that he had thrown his wife’s phone into the toilet, and she had chased him around the house with a kitchen knife.

But Sinclair said that the victim could not catch him, so she locked herself in the bedroom. He explained how he retrieved a gun from underneath a recliner in the living room, and went to the bedroom to confront her. The argument escalated, until Sinclair said that Argrett lunged at him with the knife.

He pulled the trigger, and she fell to the floor. But she got up again, so he shot her in the head, he told investigators. Sinclair then waited three hours before notifying police.

Detectives, however, said that Argrett had sustained a gunshot wound to the back of her head at close range.

After admitting that he wanted to kill his wife, Sinclair was charged with first-degree premeditated murder, murder of an unborn child and tampering with evidence.

I will say this though: that charge of “murder of an unborn child” is bullshit.  People get murdered. Fetuses do not.

Is this what they’re talking about when they say “Man Up”?

(via Supernormal Step)

I’ve worn flannel, have had multiple cats, and have worked out before.  That’s a pretty poor score. I guess someone needs to revoke my Man Card (along with my Gay Card, bc I hated Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and that’s apparently a cardinal sin in the gay world).

I kinda wonder if there shouldn’t be more. I mean, c’mon, there are plenty of other manly tasks and activities, such as mowing the lawn or working on cars. Then there’s food and drinks. Everyone knows men eat meat n potatoes and drink beer. They could so do a sequel to this.

I kinda want to see what they’d come up with for women. Actually, I can probably figure it out on my own: #1-shave your legs, face and armpits, #2-go shopping, #3-wear dresses and high heels, #4-get cock, #5-do yoga, #6-express your emotions*

*please be aware that I’m mimicking the sexist stereotypes from the above art. I don’t actually think of activities in terms of “this is what guys do and this is what women do”.  That’s some gender role bullshit that I wholly reject.

Is this what they’re talking about when they say “Man Up”?
