Utah State University gets bomb threat for hosting Anita Sarkeesian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist, video game critic, and author of Feminist Frequency (a critical web video series that explores the representations of women in video games). She is often the target of harassment, rape threats, and threats of violence to herself and her loved ones.  She received a bomb threat earlier this year:

Feminist and pop culture critic Anita Sarkeesian has revealed to Kotaku that she was the subject of bomb threats in March of this year. Anonymous members of the gaming communtiy threatened to detonate an explosive device at the Game Developers Choice Awards (GDC) in San Francisco, where she was scheduled to appear.

The SFPD Explosive Ordinance Disposal Division was called in to deal with the threats, which targeted the Moscone Center during the convention. The threat, delivered via email to numerous GDC staff, was an attempt to blackmail the awards into rescinding Sarkeesian’s award:

“A bomb will be detonated at the Game Developer’s Choice award ceremony tonight unless Anita Sarkeesian’s Ambassador Award is revoked. We estimate the bomb will kill at least a dozen people and injure dozens more. It would be in your best interest to accept our simple request. This is not a joke. You have been warned.”

She has done absolutely nothing to justify such horrible threats (hell, I’m not sure what someone would have to do to justify these threats). All she’s done is criticize fucking video games.  For that, people call for her to be raped, brutalized, and killed.

And it’s happened again.  She was to set to speak at an event at Utah State University tomorrow.  In response, a murderous, misogynistic shitspigot wrote to several member of the USU staff:

As a result of this, she has chosen to cancel her speech.

I don’t blame her.  Her personal safety and the safety of the students and staff at USU are important. I just hate that such terrorist actions worked.  They’ve silenced a woman from speaking out. I look at the above letter and I’m disgusted.  The murderer is no hero. He took the lives of 14 people because he was a deeply hate filled man. There’s nothing about feminism that is a threat. It’s about gender equality. It’s not about tearing men down. Yet there are some men, like the murderer referred to as “hero” in the letter, as well as the letter writer, and people like Elliot Rodger who think feminists are the scourge of the Earth and must be eliminated. These people are twisted and disgusting. They’ve become so mired in a cesspool of hatred and misogyny that they’ve lost touch with reality. They have no regard for human life and are dangerous. What’s frightening is that there are men out there who think like this. Men who would gleefully engage in a killing spree.  All because women want to have full political, social, and economic equality.

I don’t know whether to cry or puke I’m so disgusted.

It’s not a ridiculous crusade to improve the treatment of women in video games.
And the threats are very real. They were sent to staff of the college.
