Padmini Prakash is India’s first transgender tv news anchor

The fight for equality is not easy.  It’s lengthy and harrowing.  It’s an ongoing process with peaks and valleys, where successes occur seemingly as often as failures.  Here is a success story.

Last week, on India’s Independence Day, Padmini Prakash became the first transgender woman to read the news on live TV, a great step for the country who legally recognized third gender citizens back in April.

Prakash, an accomplished classical dancer, TV actress, and activist for transgender and other sexual minority causes, joined Lotus New Channel, a station based in Coimbatore in the southern state of Tamil Nadu last month. She was so popular that she has already been promoted to the 7 pm prime news spot.

Congratulations Padmini Prakash.

Good job India. Don’t rest on your laurels though. This is a good first step, but further representation is needed.
