SCO to Darl: “You’re FIRED!”

Ars Technica reports a bit of news for which I cannot but help a measure of schadenfreude: Darl McBride, architect of the “sue Linux” strategy that’s put SCO in the crapper and destroyed its international reputation, has been ousted as CEO. And yet, the zombie shambles ever onward, continuing the present litigations even though they’ve reorganized half a dozen times already and still haven’t managed to settle all their debts or close all their outstanding grievances.

Even after SCO’s deception was exposed and the company effectively lost its case, Darl McBride continued to insist that the company has evidence of System V code in Linux. No such evidence has been presented and McBride’s argument directly contradicts testimony given by other SCO executives. McBride’s stubborn detachment from reality has made him a subject of ridicule in the Linux community.

The SEC filing indicates that SCO COO Jeff Hunsaker and CFO Ken Nielsen will assume the responsibility of managing SCO in collaboration with the trustee. The company does not intend to name a new CEO. Additional details of the restructuring plan are said to be forthcoming, but the company says that it has undertaken several cost-cutting measures including a “a modest reduction in SCO’s workforce” and the sale of additional assets.

In a statement issued by SCO’s new leadership, the company indicates that it plans to continue its litigation efforts and will move forward with the appeals process. The company also says that it plans to continue supporting its UNIX products. This potentially indicates that SCO has given up on trying to unload its UnixWare assets, a plan that has fallen through several times now as various proposed deals have evaporated.

PJ at Groklaw will have to hold off on putting on her red dress a little while longer.

RCimT: About the Public Option

The Republicans and teabaggers are so entrenched in their position against any sort of health care reform that they’re just completely losing their shit over everything and anything they can. Your compatriots and fellow Americans are fighting the good fight and working to increase awareness of the reality behind the situation. I can but point you to them.

Stephanie Zvan has a post at Quiche Moraine wherein she explains why the Ultra-Leftist Lefty Left Liberal Moonbats are tearing themselves away from supposed MegaSocialist Barack Lenin Obama. Probably because he’s not delivering any of the change he promised. He may be better than the other guy, Oldy McBomb, that would have dragged the world screaming toward World War 3 (and probably 4), but he’s reaching across the aisle too much, accomodating the 25% that would prefer that the insurance companies go on killing you for profit. Amy Klobuchar doesn’t escape her wrath either.

Bill Moyers, and more importantly, DanJ, are also fed up with this fundamental lack of leadership coming from the White House. And he minces no words:

That’s right, Mr. President, and all the others on Capitol Hill. I’m going to hold each and every one of you personally responsible from the fucking mess that you’re perpetuating. You’re not just continuing it, either: You’re making it worse. You’re entrenching it even deeper as the status quo, and the next time it will be even tougher to dislodge the scum from the health care and health insurance industries.

Meanwhile, Greg Laden posted a few videos, of Obama debunking the pearl-clutching about health insurance reform in a fireside chat, and of a homemade commercial presenting both sides of the issue in a totally impartial and absolutely correct manner.

DuWayne Brayton relates his experience with universal health care — the emergency room. The scope is different but the results are the same. Imagine the system the emergency room uses, only where preventive care is also covered, reducing the traffic the emergency room sees. Imagine also that the people who do have to pay in, don’t have to pay nearly as much, because it takes less money to keep the whole system running. That’s what you get with single payer. And a public option is a pale shadow of that, but at least it’s SOMETHING.

All I can do is rabble-rouse from the sidelines. Get out there and make your voices heard!

Advice to geeks planning on getting married

There’s a post up on Slashdot regarding how to navigate a geek marriage. One of my favorite comments on the thread:

Marriage is like a static group in any RPG. The same basic facts apply.

1. You need goals to achieve anything. You need to achieve things to be happy. If one or more of your group is unhappy, the result will inevitably be dissolution of the group. Set goals early, set them often.

2. Whenever undertaking any task it is important to understand each group member’s role. Though not strictly necessary, it is good to have a leadership position to orchestrate any support roles. This position may be shifted around the group based on whatever the scenario requires.

3. Eventually you will reach conflict, it’s inevitable. Practice care in participating in conflicts. Attempt to understand all party’s grievances and complaints and effect a useful resolution. Submit the proposed resolution to the group and hope for a diplomatic reception.

4. Keep the channels of communication open. Be sure all group members understand and approve of any actions prior to taking them. Nobody wants a Leeroy Jenkins in their group!

5. When you wish for your group to grow, the most important prerequisite is always preparation.

6. As your group grows in numbers, avoid favoritism. All members should be treated with respect and given the assistance they need to become fully useful participants.

7. Members of your group are unlikely to be so exclusively! They may still have close ties to the group or groups that nurtured them. Be sure to respect those ties and even assist in maintaining them.

8. That said, members of the group must understand their priorities. Most successful groups have prioritized with their own goals in mind.

9. Finally, you are not the group. And the group is not you. Sometimes you must focus on your own goals. Always take time to solo and be understanding of the need of others to do the same.

Those are just a few tips on successful grouping in World of Wedcraft. Good luck!

There’s also another one recommending lots of sex. I highly endorse this, but I haven’t checked in with the rest of the guild yet.

Blogging the election, part 1

I’m going to try something I haven’t ever done before, so bear with me while I try to put together as comprehensive an article as I can manage on the NS provincial election and info about my current riding. In order to make this a little more feasible for me, as this one already grew mammoth and it’s just covering the basics, I’m going to split this up into parts. Battle cries are for when you’re about to do something really stupid, so with that in mind: “FOR SCIENCE!!!”
