#mencallmethings: “fat ass,” “bitch,” “rot in hell”

Content note: misogynist, homophobic, ableist, sizeist harassment

Asshole in email (no, Im not going to name him), replying to my recent essay on AlterNet, 7 Things People Who Say They’re ‘Fiscally Conservative But Socially Liberal’ Don’t Understand:

How the hell are you qualified to write ANYTHING about conservatives? You should pull your head out of your fat ass before touching a keyboard. Conservatives that support the removal of the gay marriage restrictions do so only because the government should not discriminate against any group, no matter how deviant. Since homosexuality is merely a “behavior” (show me the gay gene that doesn’t exist, therefore your are NOT born that way as you libtards like to claim – of course without any scientific proof as usual). But many consrvatives are syill willing to change all the rules for a “behavior”. You make me sick. Not surprised you don’t believe in God – you libtards are way too smart for that. So I am encouraged to know you will rot in hell. Hope that day comes soon and is full of suffering for you and your entire famly bitch

#mencallmethings

Note 1: Yes, this is definitely going to make me re-think my position on fiscal conservatism. I hadn’t considered the possibility that I might be a fat-ass deviant libtard bitch who will rot in hell, and that therefore conservative fiscal policy might be more sound than I’d previously thought. /sarcasm

Note 2: Re “I am encouraged to know you will rot in hell. Hope that day comes soon and is full of suffering for you and your entire famly”: Why, precisely, should my entire family suffer because I’m queer and/or an atheist?

Note 3: It’s interesting to note that I actually said very, very little in this piece about homosexuality, and nothing at all about same-sex marriage. The piece was mostly about poverty and race. It’s interesting how people with passionate hatred will zero in on the object of their hatred, even when it’s entirely tangential.

Note: The #mencallmethings hashtag does not say #allmencallmethings, or #mostmencallmethings. If you want to learn more about the history of this hashtag and why people started using it, please read But How Do You Know It’s Sexist? The #MenCallMeThings Round-Up and Why Are You In Such A Bad Mood? #MenCallMeThings Responds! on Tiger Beatdown, where the hashtag originated. And please do not start a “but not all men are like that, so the #mencallmethings hashtag is reverse sexism!” argument. That has been addressed, at length, in the comments in the #mencallmethings: “FUCKIN HOE,” “FUCKIN FEMINAZI SLUT” post, as well as elsewhere. Please read Why “Yes, But” Is the Wrong Response to Misogyny if you’re wondering why I will not take kindly that that particular line of conversation.

I really wish we could give these people 10 minutes in the Hell they so pornographically fantasize about and lust after. It might give them some perspective. It seems like some people are so completely lacking in basic humanity that they only learn through pain…

If you never write another bit of snark, you will achieve sarcasm sainthood for this line alone: ” I hadn’t considered the possibility that I might be a fat-ass deviant libtard bitch who will rot in hell, and that therefore conservative fiscal policy might be more sound than I’d previously thought.”

Not surprised you don’t believe in God – you libtards are way too smart for that.

Is… is ‘too smart for religion’ supposed to be an insult?

Excellent reply, Greta. You made your point very clear, and given the reactions, I think most critics didn’t even bother to read it.

RE: “Unnamed Conservative Who Likes To Respond To Article Titles”

How the hell are you qualified to write ANYTHING about conservatives?

Good question! The first step toward removing ignorance is asking questions.

To be “qualified to write ANYTHING” on a political stance you don’t hold yourself generally involves actually reading and/or listening to those representing it. Given that it doesn’t look like you’ve actually read Greta’s article before responding, I’m not sure you’re up to this task and thus you think others aren’t able to either.

    But, hold on, there’s this:

therefore your are NOT born that way as you libtards like to claim

    and:

you libtards are way too smart for that

So, you have been reading and/or listening to “libtards” enough to determine not only what we “like to claim”, but also enough to deduce our intelligence level. It is interesting that you feel qualified to do so.

I don’t buy any of this for a second. As evidenced by your response, it’s clear your sexist ego is all sorts of damaged over the fact that Greta is given a microphone that you aren’t given because of a simple, stone-cold, apolitical, hard fact: Greta is an exceptional writer and you aren’t.

Ophelia Benson has bandied around the term: ‘whataboutery;’ which I think covers this one pretty well.

Maintaining a constant level of indignant fury, endless puffery can be generated. Since it will all lead back to some vague, unexamined stupidity.

Jeebus, anti-gay ‘squick’ generated by propagandists, The Free Market, Monsanto, ‘Truferism’ in any of its forms, Zionist-Orientalist-Enlightenment-Hegemonic-Narrative…

Almost any position, even ones that one has partial agreement with, can be turned into a pit of toxic vomitus.

I really enjoyed reading your article “7 Things People Who Say They’re ‘Fiscally Conservative But Socially Liberal’ Don’t Understand” and it’s sad that you get flooded with backwards thinking conservatards’ responses.

I have always been impressed with the fiscally liberal policies of the Scandinavian societies who seem to have struck a nice balance between socialism and capitalism. Everyone has access to healthcare and education. Yet there is a criticism of welfare societies that I don’t have an adequate answer to. There is an argument that in the Scandinavian model there is little room for innovation. That is, the Swedes too enjoy their iPhones and iPads which are produced via Apple in capitalist USA. There is no Swedish or Finnish equivalent of Sheryl Sandberg or Steve Jobs. Doesn’t high taxation of say a company like Apple unmotivate them to create new products that even the enlightened Swedes crave? Doesn’t too much state control kill off innovation?

ragdish @ #10. Thanks for the kind words and interesting thoughts. But can you please not use the suffix “-tard”? Using “retarded” or related words as an insult is a slur. Please don’t do it. Thanks.

    Radish @ 10

A slightly longer answer is that as long as innovation is even slightly profitable it will occure. You don’t have to leave ALL of the wealth at the top for there to still be motive to invest. If the government takes 50% net profit, there is still 50% left. What it may do is reduce risk taking as the net returns would be lower allowing less risk. In some markets that would be an excellent thing.

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracks ships by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships, AIS base stations, and satellites. AIS was invented by Swede Håkan Lans.

The HIV tracker is used for mapping out and detecting the spread of HIV and other viruses. It also can detect extremely low concentrations of poisons, viruses or other substances in liquids which makes it potentially valuable for fighting bioterrorism. It was invented by a team at Lund University in Sweden.

The PowerTrekk fuel cell charger is a Swedish innovation.

That’s the results of 30 seconds with Google. It appears you’re incorrect about Scandinavian innovation.

About the “rot in hell” part: don’t worry about it. You wouldn’t want to be in heaven. Hell is where all the good people are.
