Second McCain aide quits over DCI ties

The second McCain aide in as many days has left the campaign over ties to a public relations firm that once represented the Burmese junta.

Doug Davenport, one of McCain's 11 regional campaign managers, quit his post today, a McCain spokeswoman said in response to an inquiry.

"Doug has tendered his resignation and we have accepted it," Jill Hazelbaker wrote in an e-mail.

She said Davenport quit this morning for the same reason that spurred McCain's hand-picked convention manager to resign yesterday: connections to the DCI Group.

As reported yesterday by Newsweek, the Republican-heavy PR firm was on retainer for the repressive regime in Burma in 2002.

Doug Goodyear, who would have been McCain's man at the St. Paul convention, was the target of Michael Isikoff's story.

But the report also put immense pressure on Davenport, who had run DCI's lobbying practice before signing on with McCain last month to run Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Kentucky and West Virginia for McCain.

"I have long supported John McCain and do not want anything in my past business career - whether properly depicted or not - to distract the Senator's campaign," Davenport said in a statement.

  3. Cant wait to hear the spin on this one. O yeh: John Mccain sought and is proud to have the support of these men: Parsley his spiritual advisor believes America was put on this planet to eliminate Islam. So by that reckoning 2.8 million Americans should be murdered because it is an American birthright? Jerry Falwell yep the same person Mccain described as an agent of intolerance?now? He sought and got the endorsement of a man that right after 9/11 blamed the horror and murder on American citizens? John Hagee, Mccain sought out and went after this man?s endorsement. Hagee believes Katrina was an act of god to punish homosexuality?mm ok so all the people that died in that tragic disaster are gay? Say what??? O and for the cheery on despicable hate pie he believes Catholicism is the whore of religion? So please explain to me why it is honorable, or straight talk to take the support of these repugnant nutjobs?

  4. Notice Obama has said nothing about this. He won't stoop to that type of "gotcha" politics, attacks by association. Should this surprise us? Republicans have had ties to fascist regimes for ages, just remember Rumsfeld's friendly visit with Saddam pre '91.

  5. McCain had no idea Hagee had say those things. McCain had no money and barely any staff back then to vet endorsers like Hagee. Giuliani was endorsed by Pat Robertson. Does Giuliani believe everything Robertson has ever said of course not. The media won't talk about McCain's real pastor Dan Yeary who preaches kindness and redemption. No that wouldn't fit their story line. McCain has never been to Hagee's church or Rod Parsley's church. He doesn't know these people.

  6. *For every Rezko, we have a Keating Five.

*For every Wright, we have a Parsley, Hagee and a Falwell (I ponder the consequences would McCain repudiate them as Obama did with Wright).

*For every Ayers, we have a Liddy (and trust me, there are a LOT of Liddy's)

*For every revelation of Michelle, we have revelations of Cindy McCain.

If the Republicans want to play this game, it's easy. But they need to understand that they are outmatched in numbers and the Zeitgeist of the nation has shifted somewhat to the left. I don't think the Obama camp is so naive to believe that the Republicans will play on the issues-field. I think Obama anticipates the Rovian politics.. but does the McCain camp?

From what I've seen, McCain's camp will cry every single day untill November. It's nice to know that Lieberman is there to check McCain's "bearings".

  12. McCain lead the investigation against Jack Abramoff. McCain knew many gop members would go to jail and he still lead the investigation against Abramoff. McCain took the side of the little guy in the native american indians against Abramoff. Without McCain no one would have ever found out about Abramoff. But the media doesn't report that because it doesn't fit the story line they want to show. McCain showed great courage doing this. McCain's money dried up and he went broke last year because the lobbying industry doesn't like him. McCain goes after drug companies and tabacco companies. Big business does not like McCain. This election has become all about distortions.

  14. McCain is a maverick. He supports importing prescription drugs from canada. He is for stem cell research. McCain voted against the bush-cheney energy bill giving tax breaks to oil companies in 2004 and 2005. Obama who blasts McCain on energy voted for the energy bill in 2005 and Clinton voted for the one in 2004. McCain critics point to him not being a maverick because he spoke at a graduation ceremony at Liberty University and he hugged Bush. It is a shame to see the way a great man like McCain is being smeared.

  15. I certainly don't want to see McCain elected as president, but on the issue of Burma a bit more reflection might be in order. Trashing the Myanmar/Burma government and promoting a boycott has been a republican cause: Why, Laura Bush herself published a heartfelt op-ed piece in support of the boycott in the Wall Street Journal on October 10th of last year. It may be sheer coincidence, but October 10th is the nationalist National Holiday in China, the BIG Celebration of CCP domination and Han chauvinist ascendancy. It is not sheer coincidence, however, that the boycott plays Burma perfectly into the outstretched and waiting arms of Bejing's totalitarian regime. However bad the military government might be, it would be worse if China was running the show (by some accounts they already are). The Burmese need more, not less, contact with nations other than China. It's unclear to me whether those who support the boycott do so because they are witless or because they would like to see Burma become another Tibet. I don't know Doug Davenport or Mr. Goodyear, I don't know the DCI group, and I don't need any more reasons not to support McCain. I hope the occasion of this tragedy allows relief supplies to pour into the country without strings. It may tip the balance in favour of more contact between Burma and a plurality of other interests.

  20. Yes, you did well in the special elections, Alex. You'll almost certainly pick up more seats in Congress this fall, too.

But the presidency's a little different, isn't it?

In the past 10 presidential contests Dems have only won 3.

In 2000, a year in which by all measures Al Gore should have won in a landslide...he snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Even if you actually believe Gore barely managed to get a few more votes in Florida (and there's no good evidence that was the case), it shouldn't have been by such a narrow margin.

In 2004, you put up John Kerry, thinking his war record made him bulletproof. Were you one of the ones who were surprised after following all the exit poll data on Election Day, Alex?

How do we keep doing it? Is it all just dirty tricks? Some of you think we put a tampered microphone in Howard Dean's possession that day he lost in Iowa, so that it made his scream seem high-pitched and girly. Do you believe that too, Alex? It's all nonsense, of course, but in that paranoia you can sense the frustration, the inability to find the real answers...

At any rate, we do have a way to turn these elections in a way that surprises you liberals, don't we? It maddens and boggles you as to how we're able to make a connection with the voters.

I wonder how you liberals will be surprised this cycle? To paraphrase ol' Rummy, it's not the known unknowns but the unknown unknowns you have to worry about...

  21. Jason; McCain is being smeared because of everything you just said. Importing prescription medicine from Canada

    1) Does not guarantee the quality of the drug only that Canada copied the chemical value formula back-engineered from it's discoverers here in the US.

2)Drug companies in the US spend millions not only in R&D but trying to get the drug through the FDA and on to market. Only then can they begin to recoup their investment. For a foreign country to under cut this process would put drug companies out of business. So what? They charge too much anyway? Who's going to find the cure for Alzheimer's Jason, something you may need someday. Canada? That's why McCain is smeared.

Stem cell research and stem cell research on the federal governments dime are two separate issues. Do you know the difference Jason?

The oil company tax breaks of 2004 gave those companies an incentive to explore, especially off the coast but that $750M savings (on their part) is all for naught if we can't drill.

I found it terribly ironic that the greatest opponent to stem cell research, Ronald reagan, could have been the one to have actually benefitted from such research....it could have cured his Alzheimer's disease!! But, he died the same way as the rest of AD patients....death, the greatest equalizer. btw, Im seriously starting to wonder whether McCain has some form of early Alzheimer's. 33. Jason: I'm glad you responded, I'd like to get something straight. I can't back John McCain for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that I threw my vote away on George Bush twice. I'm tired of voting for the lesser of evils especially since McCain already has one foot in the enemies camp.

I said that to say this. I freakin hate Obama. He's a piece of turd the system missed on the first flush. I thought I hated HiTlary till this guy showed up. He's crap. I think I made myself clear.

Back to McCain. What makes you think McCain will nominate conservative judges Jason? This guy runs right but governs left. He's almost point my point a mirror HiTlary Clinton, in drag. Let's say he does nominate a constitutionalist. He has absolutely no coat tails and since 17 republican congressman are calling it quits (two dems) we're going to lose seats in the House while the Senate may become veto proof. That means only a liberal judge is going to be confirmed no matter what McCain or anyone else does. Our best shot here is to change the complexion of congress in 2010 hoping the entire Supreme Court doesn't retire by then.

You're assuming of course Jason that John McCain is a conservative or even a republican, he's neither. Will he nominate conservative judges? More so than Obama for certain but how's he going to get those through congress? Will Obama cut and run from Iraq? Don't kid yourself Jason, no democrat wants to be saddled forever with losing this thing. He'll do just as Bush.

My big concern is illegal immigration. McCain has already demonstrated is willingness to cave, no jump across the isle. He'll not only sponsor liberal legislation, he'll sign it when it originates from congress. Make no mistake, this guy is a lib.

What amazes me is that with the uproar over illegal immigration two years ago all three of these candidates are for it. That's premeditated treason. I'd rather see the libs get the blame for the next four years than the right, than one of our own. The slide toward the left is too slippery to allow our own side to take us down. At some point we need to turn and fight. We need to send a serious message to the GOP, no more George Bush's. McCain validates Bush.

Obama is SO bad he'll scare us straight. Remember Carter? He lead to 12 years of republicans in the WH and it would have been 20 if not for Ross Parrot. Obama will do that again. And BTW Jason, I apologize for being hash with you in your first post. When I first wrote that I thought it was to Jesse. I can't stand that cow.

Obama's problem is that his deep, personal connection with Rev. Wright and Tony Rezko shows a shocking lack of judgement. Obama is running on his judgement because he has no experience - well it appears he has no judgement either.

  44. Basically all of us support stem cell research. Stem cells can be obtained from several sources, but they can't be triggered to do the things that embryonic stem cells can. John McCain supports EMBRYONIC stem cell research and the bulk of us who are pro life are against the use of embryos for scientific research.

While embryonic stem cell research holds a lot of promise I think that the statement that it can or will cure alzheimers is a little bit premature. Without the research, we can only hope and guess about what it can do, not make firm statements that it will do it. There has been some pretty remarkable work done though enticing regular stem cells to do the work that the embryonic stem cells can do, so there is still a lot of hope on that front too.

It really just kind of amounts to whether or not you can personally support the use of embryos in scientific research.

Even if we passed laws that said those embryos would be put up for adoption and changed treatment guildelines to involve creating less embryos we would still have hundreds left over every day.

As for Hagee he may not have attended his church but the trail of phones calls and invites to events some accepted and some not, are numerous. McCain did in fact know of both Parsley's and Hagee's comments prior to accetpting and stating himself "with great honor and pride he accepts Hagee's support and endorsement" WoW, even if it were true that he did not know them or their comments, are you that desperate for money? That is scary on may different levels. He would get into bed with these guys just for money? Cindy is a billionaire many times over why didn't they sell one of their nine houses? or couldn't she lend him money like Hillary is doing her campagin? or they are that clueless at the McCain headquarters that they did not know,(not). Who does he listen to? Certainly not his personal pastor or does his pastor teach things like swearing in the Senate at fellow Senators and threatening them, or do they sing Bomb, Bomb,Bomb Iran at his church (he said that was his favorite Beach Boy song), or maybe his pastor teaches womanizing and cheating on your wife (at least 7 documented affairs)and then deserting her after she was permentantly disabled in a car accident. I guess thats okay if you marry your drug addict, anorexic (she has been treated for both) mistress who steals drugs from her own charity only one month after divorcing the mother of your children. Way to let them heal, big guy. Selfish and self absorbed. Or one my personal favorites from the straight talk express "There are neighborhoods in Baghdad where you and I could walk through those neighborhoods today." --prior to visiting a Baghdad market while being flanked by 22 soldiers, 10 armored Humvees, and two Apache attack helicopters. Or another crazy fron his closet Pat Buchanan said that "McCain will make Cheney look like Mother Teresa" from his own camp.

  56. Posted By: Politricks In Florida | May 11, 2008 at 07:17 PM "Do people know that the Keating Five scandal eventually cost U.S. taxpayers $2.6 billion dollars? I think that's a lot more significant than some guy doing Obama a favour because he likes him. _______________ Do you know anything about this? If so, you would know Robert Bennett, the attorney for the Senate Ethics Committee for Keating 5 (and also Bill Clinton's atty), recommended that McCain not be prosecuted because he didn't interfere with the regulators once he learned of the formal investigation. However, since he was the only Rep., the Dems on the committee wouldn't let him out. You can actually thank the Dems for that $2.6 Billion. And try to read up on these things before you post next time.

  57. Jesse, you are simply too ignorant to address but in the name of what's right and what's clearly stupid: "WE" don't toss embryos away. Here in the US, those embryos are the property of the woman who donated the egg and/or the man who donated the sperm or both or the company who has purchased the rights to them. "WE" have very little say in the matter at all other than thus far its illegal to use them for scientific research. In the few cases when the courts have required that the embryos be destroyed, it is the egg and sperm donors who should decide the method of destruction; not you and certainly not that idiot, John McAncient. Those embryos are often the 'children' of citizens of the US. There is more than enough dispute right now over the rights to human tissue in the United States without you spreading your usual stupidity and trying to mislead people into believing that the US government is 'tossing' away frozen embryos. Unless "Uncle Sam" has an "Aunt Sarah" stashed away somewhere having her eggs harvested regularly, the US government isn't doing much of anything with frozen embryos.
