Welcome to the Saturday Song at En Tequila Es Verdad! Every other Saturday, I share a song and a theme with you, and if you’ve got a song that fits, share it in the comments. Next week, I’ll post a playlist we’ve all made together. It’s pretty neato! You can sample previous Saturday Songs here.
This Saturday’s theme is Entrancing. You know those songs with an element that just nestles right into your brain and puts you into almost a trance-like state? Those songs that alter your mood and make you a little dreamy, or are just a little ineffable? This song is one of those for me:
First time I heard it, the thing echoed in my head for weeks. Positively haunting!
What song entrances you?
“What song entrances you?”
Off the top of my head, and really the first one I go to for that mood:
Sirenia – In Sumerian Haze
Seeing as you want only the one song, I had to leave the Delerium collection alone. And you’ll still get two! haha…
Up first, James Blake’s cover of Limit to Your Love, because of the silences. He really makes the spaces work.
Second, Enigma’s Silent Warrior – pretty much the whole album I found entrancing, but this is the song (not Return to Innocence) that really sticks with me.
VNV Nation’s Saviour, the non lyric version.
This one’s a slow burner, from a truly remarkable musician (and a remarkable voice): Mark Hollis, ‘The Daily Planet’
And just because its my birthday, here is a real gem – starts of slightly nervous and wistful, changes tempo halfway, and then descends into complete, captivating madness: Kila, ‘Luna Park”
This is the opening track to my favorite Jazz album, Sketches of Spain by Miles Davis. I have a lovely 180 gram copy on vinyl and I put it on whenever I have one of those ‘Calgon take me away” moments…

For folks too young to get the reference…

This song. I have to be in the right mood for it, but when I am, it sucks me in forever. It has a very dark, sensual, ragged edge to it.
Mine’s Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. Sometimes the original, sometimes the London Philharmonic’s orchestral version (which unfortunately seems to have been taken down from YouTube).
Monkberry Moon Delight by Paul and Linda McCartney. I remember hearing it for the first time in the middle of the night back in 1971 on my first am/fm radio, which I would put on the floor next to my bed at night (near an outlet since it needed to be plugged in). It took several days before I managed to hear it again.
I’m not sure how much is memory from that first time hearing it, but it still gives me the dream-like waking-up in the middle of the night not sure if I’m asleep or awake feeling when I listen to it today.
nina simone’s feeling good …

The inside of my head is an odd place to be, so anything that entrances me has to be a bit strange. I’d have to go with Godspeed You Black Emperor – Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, particularly track 4 Antennas to Heaven Fair warning, its 19 mins long.
And can’t forget… Congrats on the new place!
I’ll be entranced by anything Paco plays (R.I.P.)
Pink Floyd – so many of theirs but particularly :

Learning To Fly but also plenty of others. I’d probably be pretty easy to hynotise really, a lot of music entrances me.
Arrgh! I know, I know, only one song but, well, I just can’t resist mentioning Lindsey Stirling here too :

Among so many of her other songs. So hard to choose just one.
For me it’s been Translatlantic’s latest album, particularly the opening track Into the Blue. I suppose I should warn listeners here that they lyrics have some religious themes and this might actually be a Christian Rock Band. But whatever, it’s still great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOkwsvKO2tM
In terms of dreamy trance-like ineffable somethingness it’s hard to beat Vangelis.
