Anyone know of anything good? I’m a total loss when it comes to this sort of thing.

Hmmm… I can suggest pretty rocks that a 4-year old might like (labradorite, granite, anything colourful or sparkly) and I can suggest other geology-related stuff, but I don’t know of any starter kit-type things. What I will recommend is The Magic School Bus. Maybe get the book where they go inside the Earth and read it to her… Seriously, I think TMSB is the reason I’m studying geology now at uni, although the computer games were really what converted me. They might have to wait until she’s old enough to read though (assuming she’s not one of those super-literate 4-year-olds). I hope the games are still available.

Oh sure … start them off early, the first taste is always free. Once they are addicted, and Jonesing for a geology fix they will have to pay. Then you have them. Soon enough they are doing unspeakable things to fondle the lovely and terrible rocks.

Okay, geodes are wanted. Extra cache coming from actual geologists. Ian’s idea is a fantastic one. Anyone got a geode or two they can send? If Sci can’t pay for shipping, I can.

Thank you all for the responses! If you’ve got any more resources for awesome geology gifties, post ’em, and I’ll put together a one-stop shopping post.

Thanks so much guys!!! I just saw a budding interest in science and had to pounce! She’s in to sparkly, and I think geodes that she can watch her Mom smash open would go over REALLY well. I can pay for shipping no problem.
