But zippers are shiny!

When I was little I played pranks with my friends – little things to make each other giggle or groan or make us pay attention to each other. One of our classics was unzipping each others jackets when the other wasn’t paying attention. It would usually elicit a mock indignant yelp, some laughs and a promise of “payback” in the form of the instigator’s jacket being unzipped next time.

I was in grade school, maybe eight years old. It has been decades since that game stopped being amusing.

Christmas in Maryland

Catch-up travel blogging from Christmas week.

After work on Tuesday night, the Hubby and I boarded a flight from Minneapolis to Baltimore, Maryland. My mom picked us up at BWI at 11:00pm (My mom is pretty awesome) and drove us to Hagerstown through some seriously thick fog; I kept my eyes shut for quite a few parts of the the hour-long trip. We made it home without incident and hit the sack almost before the front door was locked.

Home in Minneapolis

I had an unexpected emotional reaction yesterday. I had just left a meeting with a friend in what I’m calling “my old neighborhood” – the part of south Minneapolis called Lyndale. I was driving up 35W North to get around the city and over to 394, which would take me to my current apartment in Saint Louis Park. I got to a stretch of the highway where the tall buildings of downtown Minneapolis are laid out in front of you: The IDS building, Foshay Tower, Wells Fargo, Campbell Mithun, Capella Tower, and the newer Grant Park apartments. My first thought was – as it often is – it’s such a small downtown. I grew up playing in Chicago and I’ve stood before the magnificent sprawl of New York City, and after those Minneapolis is a wee thing. But then a nearly overwhelming rush of love and admiration flowed through me and I realized that this city is my home.

Cross-Country Connections: Rock

Cross-Country Connections is a Biodork weekly blog entry dedicated to telling stories in pictures of three family members – me, my sister and Mom – living in different locations across the country. Every week we choose a different theme and then take or contribute a personal photo that fits the theme. This week’s theme is Rock.

From Erin in Rockville, Maryland:

A cavern, light by sun coming in from the left side of the photo, filled with stalactites reflects off of a pool of water

Luray Caverns, Virginia. I spent New Years Day astounded by geology.

From Mom in Hagerstown, Maryland:

Mom standing in front of a rock pillar twice as tall as her. The word "England" is carved in capital letters at the top of the rock. In the background is a paved road, green grass and further off, blue mountains.

How’s this for the world’s best rock? The border between England and Scotland – a rock with England on the other side of this!

From me in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota:

A rock face - four climbers are shown. One is on the rock, nearly at the top, his spotter down below. A second climber an spotter wait below. All are wearing gear and rope is coiled in a pile to the left of the photo.

From a wonderful day trip this past fall: Climbers prepare to ascend a rock face at Interstate Park on the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Cross-Country Connections: Fresh

From me in Saint Louis Park, Minnesota:

A pile of grated white cheese on a white plate with gray, blue and green trim. A black cheese grater sits behind the plate and various kitchen bric-a-brac are in the background: a dish towel, a skillet handle a ginger root, a small green plant.

Freshly-grated Parmesan cheese

From Erin in Rockville, Maryland:

A LEGO dinosaur appears to be mounting a LEGO snail. You know...in the sexy times way.

Not now LegoDino! We’re in public!

From Mom in Hagerstown, Maryland:

A brown soup with onions, carrots, beans and meat.

Tex Mex Beef Soup with fresh peppers and other yummy ingredients.

Atheism: It's Not All About Atheism

This morning I was up early to do the live radio show, Atheists Talk. My guest was Keith Lowell Jensen, a stand-up comedian who incorporates atheism into much of his work. We spent a portion of the first section (about seven minutes) discussing his religious upbringing, when he started including atheism into his material, and the purpose of doing so. Then we moved on to talk other things like his new album, Atheist Christmas, Keith’s work with Stand Up! Records, his comedic style and influences, etc.

This did not sit well with Roger from Saint Louis Park.
