Cosplay: We Made A Thing Today!

One of my favorite things about CONvergence -and of which there are many – is all of the cosplay. The Hubby and I love to people-watch, and we like to dress up when it’s creative and convenient. This year we decided that we had the time and energy to put together a few costumes. We spent yesterday planning specifics and shopping, and we made some amazing finds. I’m not going to put up photos of the complete costumes until CONvergence weekend, but here are the descriptions:

The Belcher Family
Tina and Louise Belcher from Bob’s Burgers – Aaron is repurposing a wig from a previous V for Vendetta costume for Tina, and he has a pair black thick-framed glasses that will serve.  We found a simple blue skirt, blue t-shirt, and yellow barrette for the him at Target. Black high-top Converses came from Famous Footwear. The retro tube socks will be picked up from Sox Appeal tomorrow. We had a bit more of a challenge finding a green dress for my Louise. There was nothing at Target, Savers or TJ Maxx, but then we lucked out at the Dress Barn: Kelly green with sleeves on the clearance rack, only one left AND in my size, 35% off. SCORE! Pink bunny ears hat ordered from Etsy. Black flats with strap from Famous Footwear.

The Kindly Man (Faceless Men of Braavos, Game of Thrones) – The TV show hasn’t yet shown the Kindly Man, so I have a lot of leeway for this costume. The photo to the right is fan art that I found on A Wiki of Ice and Fire. I decided to tear apart an old polyester skeleton/ghoul robe that I have from a previous costume. We cut the black robe and cowl in half and we’re sewing in the other half with white polyester, which we picked up yesterday at Hancock Fabrics. This will be the most challenging costume for me because I haven’t used a sewing machine since I made that pillow in sixth grade Home Economics. But the Hubby has some rudimentary sewing skills and promised to help make it happen. I’m probably going to order a skeleton mask from Amazon, but masks get hot and sticky pretty quickly at CONvergence, so I haven’t quite decided what to do with my face for this costume. Hmmm…maybe a half red/half white shoulder-length wig…

Lwaxana and Mr Homn
Lwaxana Troi and Mr. Homn – I borrowed a man’s korta from a coworker for the Hubby’s Mr. Homn outfit and we’re picking up Manic Panic white face foundation and powder to give him Mr. Homn’s pale skin. AND we’re going to cut his hair, which means he’s getting his head shaved. Ah well, CONVergence comes but once a year! We found a gown for Lwaxana at Macy’s, which was completely unexpected because Macy’s would normally be out of our price range for a costume piece. Clearance racks are a wonderful thing. And today…today I made a thing. I needed a big, bold…oh let’s be honest – gaudy – hair piece for Lwaxana. She didn’t always wear crazy shit in her hair, but when she did…whew!

I met my friend Jodi this morning and we went to Michael’s to pick up arts and crafts supplies. It was one of those trips where you wander around the store, planning the project as you walk up and down the aisles exploring and comparing the options. We wandered for about an hour and I left feeling a bit of trepidation because I had spent more money than I was quite comfortable with spending (turns out feathers and ribbon aren’t cheap!) and I still didn’t have a clear idea of how the final product would look, or if it would be sturdy enough to survive Con. But several hours and a few hot glue gun burns later – and thanks to all of Jodi’s help and ideas! –  we managed to create something that I’m super-dooper excited about. And y’all get pictures of this one, although as Jodi said, this is really too much hair piece for any one photo:

Modeled on Biodork's head: Giant hair piece made of purple and blue ribbon, blue flowers, beads and peacock feathers.
Close-up of the right side of the hair piece - small blue and purple flowers
Close-up of the left side of the hair piece - purple crystally beads wired together in strings and draping down the frame of the hair piece.

Aggggggghhhhh! I KNOW, right!? Gaudiness that would make Lwaxana proud. And enough ribbon to decorate a British royal wedding party!

The Hubby also has a steampunk costume and a Star Trek science officer’s costume that he’ll wear, so we’re pretty much wrapped up with costumes and we still have three weeks until CON. Hmmmm…guess I can get to work on some of those panels I’m scheduled to sit on…
