6 O’Clock BS – Viewing Venus

According to timeanddate.com I should be able to “see” Venus in front of the sun now (given that I’m converting UTC to CST correctly!). I tried the pinhole camera trick, but I’m not getting anything for it that I can see.

One of my twitter pals posted this. I wish I had more time to try it.

Is anyone getting any good projections?

    Yes! Using a camera tripod and a $12 telescope kit, I’m seeing a great image, projected on a piece of cardboard. Some sunspots, too. Science-on-a-budget RULES!

    Huh, I thought about doing a pinhole camera too, but I wasn’t sure it would come to anything. My parents made them for us when…I wanna say it was the annular eclipse, in ’94. It was really cool, but small. Venus is so much smaller-looking-from-here than the moon, though. I’m watching it live on Ustream, which is pretty neat. Yay, technology!

    Good on you, mikeym, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of doing it that way!

    It’s a little late now, but, for personal veiwing, some co-workers and I passed around a welder’s mask with #14 glass that we borrowed from the campus workshop. It worked wonderfully! I saw the transit very clearly, though shrouded in a dark blue-green tint.

    Seeing this rare sight was well worth the effort!

    I used a 4′ box with a pinhole in the front and I still wasn’t able to see the transit…the image was still too small. I thought I saw something, but I think it was just wishful thinking. I ended up watching a bit of Cosmos Quests live hangout instead.

    My friend borrowed his neighbors #13 welding glasses (you’re supposed to use #14) and said he was able to see it clearly before he burned out his retinas…:>P No seriously, he said they were OK and did see the transit. I wish I would have had the foresight to grab some welding goggles or eclipse glasses.
