Today’s 6 O’Clock BS is a question and some thoughts:

Did any of you participate in Everyone Draw Mohammed Day yesterday? If so what was your motivation for participating?

There is a time and place for controversial commentary. As a statement or campaign I think EDMD has value. Handing a picture of Mohammad to every person on the street who is wearing Muslim garments would be an asshole thing to do.

I am a proponent of community-building with people who don’t share my beliefs, but not everything I do has to be a community-building action, nor do I have to play nice all the time. We absolutely need to be who we are, and to say and do what we feel is important, even if some of our allies find it personally offensive or repugnant to their private beliefs. As Jamilla Bey mentioned this past weekend,  if we agreed on everything we wouldn’t be allies – we’d be in the same group!

I am not a believer of Islam and I don’t have to follow the rules in their hadiths. Makes sense, right? But some Islamic leaders try to tell me that I’m wrong, that I – that all of us – must respect their religion, that it is our responsibility to not offend them. And when we rightly scoff at these assertions, they think an appropriate response to our scoffing is to harrass, threaten, assault and murder us for not following their rules that we never agreed to play by.

To harrass, threaten, assault or murder someone because something they have drawn has offended you is despicable. Everybody Draw Mohammad Day reminds us that we have the right to free speech, and that we do not respect the use of violence and intimidation to restrict that right.

    I was a bit late in getting my picture drawn, as in 9 hours. But, I did participate and participated last year also, that was only close to late.

    The reason for my participating is to show solidarity with those who use images that other would try to censor to make statements, such as cartoonists (South Park or the Danish paper Jyllands-Posten that published comics back in 2005). I am a much stronger supporter of International Blasphemy Day, but, due to the amount of intimidation, threats and even deaths that have come from publishing depictions of Mohammad I think EDMD is needed.
