6 O'Clock BS – Camping

This morning I woke up bright and early, threw a bunch of camping gear in the car and road tripped up north with some friends. I’m supposed to be off doing non-technology things right now, but then I discovered that MN DNR has wifi in this area.

!!!!!!!

Okay, okay. I’m taking serious flack for being online right now. It’ll probably be pretty quiet around the blog until Monday, but I may be able to sneak away and throw up a few photos or a quick thought here and there. Maybe I’ll have to hide in my sleeping bag with a flashlight…oh wait, I’m working on a laptop – scratch the flashlight.

Firepit! Stories and cigars tonight, I think.

God and Cigarettes

I don’t believe that God exists, but I did for a while. We weren’t overly religious when I was growing up, but I knew then that God existed. Leaving behind all supreme beings was a conscious decision, the rational end result of intellectual consideration of the matter. God does not exist.

But sometimes I forget that I don’t believe in God, and I’ll catch myself starting to ask a question or throwing a request up to the omnipresent, kindly, guiding, father figure of my youth*. Then I stop and remember…oh yeah. And for a moment it makes me sad that the God I once looked up to isn’t there.

But then I remember all of the bad shit that the idea of God is responsible for and I’m relieved that there isn’t one. Because as atheists like to say: s/he would have some serious explaining to do.

I remember God the way I remember cigarettes. They were enjoyable and a comfort for a while, they were hard to put down**, and even though both are a blight on this earth, every so often I find myself craving one or the other.

God isn’t welcome at my deathbed, but I sure hope I get a few last puffs off of a cigarette before I go.

*I blame fucking C.S. Lewis’s Aslan for my mental image of God. His fictional character helped solidify the way I thought of the imaginary character I was raised to believe in. Jerk.

**Smoking was a lot harder to quit than God. Quitting smoking affected me physically, emotionally, behaviorally, and socially. For me, quitting God was only a matter of quitting a thought pattern.

6 O'Clock BS – Protests

I am constantly doing photo clean-up. I snap a couple to hundreds of photos every day, and so I’m always sorting, editing, filing and archiving. Which means every once in a while I run across some neat photos that have fallen through the cracks.

When the Hubby and I were in Washington D.C. for the Reason Rally we took a few extra days to sight-see. During our meandering we ran across a number of protests. Here are some photos of those protests:

Occupy D.C.

Occupy D.C. had two different encampments that we found: One was in Freedom Square, the other was in McPherson Square. This is the website for the Occupy D.C. movement (note – it only lists McPherson as their location – I’m not sure if the Freedom Square group is affiliated with the Occupy DC group).

Unholy Night Trailer

Now this is a messed up (fabulously so) book trailer!

From the official website:

In Grahame-Smith’s [author of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies] telling, the so-called “Three Wise Men” are infamous thieves, led by the dark, murderous Balthazar. After a daring escape from Herod’s prison, they stumble upon the famous manger and its newborn king. The last thing Balthazar needs is to be slowed down by young Joseph, Mary and their infant. But when Herod’s men begin to slaughter the first born in Judea, he has no choice but to help them escape to Egypt.

It’s the beginning of an adventure that will see them fight the last magical creatures of the Old Testament; cross paths with biblical figures like Pontius Pilate and John the Baptist; and finally deliver them to Egypt. It may just be the greatest story never told.

It’s done. I’m in. It’s officially on the Kindle list of books to read.

6 O'Clock BS – Joining Groups

Look at that – it’s six o’clock! Today let’s talk about how to choose a cause. If you believe that getting involved in groups, issues, debates, community building, et cetera is a good way to spend your time, then it’s not an issue of finding an issue, it’s a matter of choosing one (or several). Thanks to the internet you can find or get involved with almost any issue from almost any location, and there is no end of groups that are looking for people to help spread their message, fight for their cause or to just hang out and be social. In many cases, the only limiting factors to your involvement are your time, your attention or interest, and your sanity.
