I’ve been really disgusted with the Kalley Yanta’s Minnesota Marriage Minute videos. Mostly because they make bigotry, fear and hate look so damn good, professional and reasonable. I’ve been meaning to post about them, but it’s been a chore to watch her maple syrup-sweet, disingenuous arguments. This morning I was going to do it. I even made it through the first three (of 10, now) videos and had started deconstructing the calmly-delivered fallacious vitriol (damn this woman brings to mind the saccharine evil of Delores Umbridge), but then YouTube helpfully directed me to this and my head exploded:

In this video Yanta’s professionalism slips a couple of notches from her MN Marriage Minute videos. Her sugar-coated sarcasm is the epitome of the tongue-in-cheek “Minnesota Nice”, which, for those who haven’t heard the term, is often used to describe passive-agressiveness. She also confirms that her social conservatism is based in religious ideology, which she doesn’t do in MN Marriage Minute.

The “I Have A Say” Campaign is a project of the Coalition to Protect Women’s Health Care, and a response to the birth control hearings held by Darrel Issa during which no women were allowed to speak. It encourages women to make a video about “Why you should have access to birth control, no matter who your employer is” and “why birth control matters to you.”

But Yanta instead spends over five minutes yammering about (I was super close to calling this post “Yanta Yammers”. Hands off – I’m totally TMing that) how birth control prolonged her promiscuous lifestyle, and how it caused the end of her first marriage. She presents the common anti-choice lies that birth control is abortion (under the assumption that a fertilized egg has a soul and is a baby), that abortion is paying someone to rip apart your child, that Planned Parenthood is an organization that sells lies and murder. She implies that when birth control fails (“as it often does”) that a selfish woman who would rather keep her house and car rather than take city buses around town (!!!!) heads down to Planned Parenthood to have an abortion, only to regret that decision for decades. She talks about how if she gets to Heaven she will have to meet all of the dead children that she aborted via her use of birth control. And of course, throughout the video she praises her rediscovery of the Catholic Church and God and his willingness to “take her back” as her salvation and why she is now speaking out against all of us selfish women.

The fact is that one of the reasons that Yanta got to where she’s at is because she had access to birth control. She is a media presence, had a career as a TV anchor on KSTP-TV, and she now – at the time of her choosing – has a family of six children that she can afford to support because she was able to forgo early motherhood. This kind of appeal drives me batshit crazy. “Hey – it worked for me, but now I feel really, really guilty about my success and happiness.” Mark Yanta up as another win for the Catholic Church.

    And what does she think they will look like, fully grown adults, adolescent children, adorable toddlers or the giant superbaby from 2001 A Space Odyssey?

    That’s odd, because birth control is good for my marriage, because my wife and I can have sex without worrying about another pregnancy. We already have two kids and can barely handle that with our work schedules.

    The problem with the Kalley Yantas of the world is that they always project their personal hangups onto everyone else.

    Will she also have to meet all the children she failed to conceive by not making sure she became pregnant every single time she ovulated, as well?

    Abstinence kills (potential) babies!

    Ugh. I don’t know what’s more irritating, the ignorance or the sanctimony.

      Think of her poor husband, not only will he be greeted by every egg he left unfertilized in his wife’s baby oven, but by every egg in every woman’s baby oven that he has ever left unfertilized. I am sure today, that he had contact with a woman who had a egg ready to go, that he did not fertilize.

      And he’ll be greeted by every sperm that he has wasted. Even in the act where he put another baby cupcake in his wife’s oven, he wasted probably over a hundred thousand other half cupcakes. Think of the punishment he must deserve. What would the punishment be for a baker who for every baby cupcake made, threw away the ingredients to make a million more cupcakes?

      So in conclusion, the people who really deserve to go to hell are any guys with testicles, as they wasted the seeds of life far more that even the most pro-abortion liberal woman.

      (Heaven’s has to be pretty nasty if every aborted fetus, unfertilized egg and wasted sperm is going to be there.)

    Never mind the fact that birth control pills and other hormonal contraceptives tend to have the effect of actually decreasing sexual drive in women making the claim that birth control pills cause promiscuity a demonstrably false claim. Yanta, if you cheated on your husband, it wasn’t the fault of the birth control.

    For her to argue against birth control because it helped her continue her ‘promiscuous lifestyle’ for a while (which I put in quotes since I consider promiscuous a meaningless word that can be attached to anyone having sex you don’t think they should be having or in a way you disagree with) as if that’s some argument about birth control is about as meaningful as someone arguing that television should go off the air since it provided a distraction to them getting things done.

    Also folks, on the point commonly made by these people that contraception = abortion because a fertilized egg might not implant. Last I checked, I wasn’t even sure if fertilization necessarily takes place instantaneously, but seriously, fertilized eggs don’t implant and end up going down the toilet all the time even without the intervention of hormonal contraception.

    In fact, I think it’s true that a reason why women are more likely to have children with chromosomal abnormalities like Down’s Syndrome when they are older is that the body tends to reject fertilized eggs with chromosomal abnormalities, but that it’s less efficient at doing this as women age. Could someone check if this is true? I’m trying to remember biology stuff from a few years back..

    This sort of reminds me of that Super Bowl commercial Tim Tebow did with his mom, Pam, about her pregancy with him. Ultimately the message there was that since Pam had the opportunity to exercise her right to choose everyone else should be forced to make the exact same decision.
