C'mon kids! Let's go to the Creation Museum!

As of yesterday, the Creation Museum was winning in internet votes for Budget Travel’s Top 15 Places Kids Should See Before 15 contest. Happily, it’s been pushed down the list to second place as of 0725 CST.

BUT IT’S STILL LISTED AS #2!!!

Want to vote that sucker right off the list? Go here to place your vote.

Note that people can vote once a day for as many locations as they want each day, not just one location each day. Several commenters on FA seemed to be confused about this. If we want to get it as far down the list as possible, we need to be upvoting all the other locations that have decent numbers of votes.

The good news is that if we don’t manage to get it all the way out of the top 15, the editors said they aren’t committing to just using whatever ends up on the list – they potentially could heed the many comments warning against the Creation ‘Museum’ and decide to omit it.

    STRATEGY

    (1) One can vote for multiple destinations.
    (2) Therefore, you should cast a vote for the destination ranked just below the Creation Museum, along with votes for as many destinations as you wish that rank above the CM, and a few more of theose ranked below it.
    (3) The Creation Museum is currently ranked #5:

    rank   vote   data
        1   3846   U    S    Space and Rocket Center, AL
2   2010   Smithsonian Museum of American History, DC
3   1775   Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, DC
4   1540   Kennedy Space Center, FL
        5   1460   Creation Museum, KY
6   1345   Yosemite National Park, CA
7   865   American Museum of Natural History, NY
8   843   The Statue of Liberty, NY

    (4) Hence, I cast 7 votes, for 1,2,3,4 (to preserve their rank above #5) and 6,7,8 (to help move them ahead of #5).

I just voted for the Smithsonian Museum of American History. The Creation Museum is at #5 currently. It’s sad that Budget Travel included the Creation Museum, given their guidelines for determining travel sites. What education can a child receive from the Creation Museum?

I just went to vote – they still have the Creation Museum showing as #6 w/o a #3.

I was just poking around and saw that someone named Andy Breeden nominated Kent Hovind’s prison “To remind them of how crazy Kent Hovind is.”

The Creationists are in the game! Remember, to sink the Museum, we need to vote for sites both above and below the Creation Museum. (You can vote for more than one site at a time; and you can cast another set of votes after 24 hours.)

    Current box score:
    rank  vote  site
1  6008  Smithsonian Museum of American History, DC
2  4345  U.S. Space and Rocket Center, AL
3  2102  Yosemite National Park, CA
4  2092  Kennedy Space Center, FL
       5  2049  Creation Museum, KY
6  1666  American Museum of Natural History, NY
7  1221  Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, IL
8  1216  The Statue of Liberty, NY
9  1005  Boston (Freedom Trail, etc.), MA
      10   816  Niagra falls, NY
11   779  USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, AL
      12   757  Mount Rushmore, SD
13   726  NASA - Johnson Space Center - Houston, TX
14   709  Gettysburg Civil War Battlefield, PA
15   676  The Mall and monuments in DC, DC
16   629  Carlsbad Caverns National Park, NM
      17   625  White house, DC

Or you could just let it be. And maybe the families who decide to plan their vacation destinations off this list, and who think the Creation Museum is a really good idea, will actually drag their kids to said “museum”.

I can just see the annoyed and disappointed kids now. Let the parents sow the seeds of irritation with religion in their children.

Those already fully owned by religion (have you seen those child preachers?) aren’t going to be swayed by seeing reality-based vacation destinations further up the list.

“Those already fully owned by religion (have you seen those child preachers?) aren’t going to be swayed by seeing reality-based vacation destinations further up the list.”

Respectfully, I disagree. I think that seeing reality-based vacation destinations may be one thing that could help religion-immersed kids notice that there is conflicting data coming from reality and what they’re being told by religion.

Well, luckily the ballot-stuffing from both sides can be ignored by Budget Travel when they choose their final list.

Hopefully the voting patterns will help BT realize that this is a contentious destination location (but more importantly that it’s devoid of any evidence-based science or educational opportunities) and they’ll boot it off the list as hard and swiftly as I would.

        1. I’ve never heard of viewpoint discrimination before. A quick google search isn’t doing much to clear it up for me. It sounds like this is a technical aspect of constitutional law that requires public organizations and institutions to apply policies and procedures in way that doesn’t give preference over one group over another, or that limits the speech of one group over another. Can you explain it better to me?

I object to the Creation Museum’s inclusion on the 15 places before 15 list because I do not believe that it is a place that children should visit. The purpose of the Creation Museum is to teach visitors that one interpretation of the Christian bible (of which there are many) is literally true and historically accurate. It puts forth information that is in direct conflict with confirmed observations of the physical world. It makes assertions and implies conclusions that are easily disprovable. The kind of things that the Creation Museum teaches makes it harder for children to explore and understand the world we live in.

          1. You don’t understand the term “viewpoint discrimination,” but you illustrate it so well with these few words:

“I object to the Creation Museum’s inclusion on the 15 places before 15 list because I do not believe that it is a place that children should visit.”

            The irony is palpable.

          2. Here’s what I have learned about the term “viewpoint discrimination”:

It is technical aspect of constitutional law that is concerned with the application of policies and procedures by public institutions. It does not mean that I am discriminating against your viewpoint. Also, disagreeing with your viewpoint is not discrimination.

I cannot make an argument based on viewpoint discrimination in the way that you have stated. You have improperly applied the term in this case.
