CUP Contest Update

Sorry gang, I’m swamped beyond all swampiness and can’t do the CUP post today. I’ll pick it up tomorrow at the normal noon time.

I appreciate you stopping by, so everyone who leaves me a comment below will automatically get 40 points towards the CUP rankings. BUT – it can’t be just any comment! Tell me at least one word that makes you giggle, or a word that you love to read or say, and if possible, why you love it or it makes you giggle.

Thanks for your patience and understanding! See you tomorrow at noon!

One word that makes me giggle is “poop”. I love it when grown-ups use “poop” as an expletive.

CUP #21 Answer and CUP #22

Sorry gang, yesterday and this morning were crazy and I haven’t had a chance to update the rankings yet. I’m betting I’ll have time to do that this evening.

But, onto the winner of yesterday’s CUP!

The winner was the first and only person to guess correctly: LANCE FINNEY with his guess “a waterwheel”!

This is Lance’s second recent win – congratulations! Lance gets 100 points.

Everyone else gets 20 points for playing, but no other points for guesses. (sorry to be brief – I have to catch a bus!)

And here’s CUP #22!

What is this?

CUP #21 Answer and CUP #22

CUP #20 Answer and CUP #21

I liked this last CUP and all of the different guesses that everyone gave. I’m giving the big Kahuna Burger prize to Jeremy. He was the first with a somewhat vague but absolutely accurate comment about “some kind of boat fin”. Jeremy gets 100 points. Plus an extra 5 points for throwing a Sarkozy joke in at my implied request from contest #19. However, I’m also giving 50 points to newcomer Steve P. for his later, but dead on accurate answer “keel of a poly kayak”.

Steve P. also gets 25 points for being a newcomer. Welcome Steve P.!

Noelle, Carly, Jude, Vicki and Erin all get 15 points for playing, but no points for their guesses.

Ellie, Whitney and Michelle  all get 30 points for various acceptable answers (upside down canoe, kayak).

I’ll have new rankings tallied up later today.

Thanks for playing, everyone! Who’s ready to start a fresh week of CUPs?

Jury Duty

So, I pulled jury duty for Hennepin Country, and today I’m starting a two-week term of service. I was originally on the call-in list, but I guess Hennepin County is feeling a might criminally and civil complainty this month because our group was called in on Day 1. Now we’re no longer on the call-in list; we’re in the active pool. This means I have to show up to the Government Center in downtown Minneapolis and report to the Jury Assembly room (or a courtroom) every. day. for the next 10 business days.

But – there is no court on Thanksgiving or the day after Thanksgiving (thank FSM that my Black Friday consumerism won’t be hindered by a sense of court-ordered social obligation!), and being on jury duty is a pretty easy gig.

I show up, check in, and then lounge around in a comfy room with comfy chairs. There are lots of tables, electrical outlets and pretty decent WiFi, which means that I can use the internet and charge my phone and laptop throughout the day. There is *nothing* to do if I’m not actively on a jury panel – and I mean that in the best way possible. I can read, play online (maybe catch up on some of my 2,626 twitter favorites that I’ve got racked up), play games on my phone or iPod, listen to music, watch movies or TV on my laptop, talk on the phone, and I can eat or drink in here. They also have a TV room and office. I could even pull up work email and documents if I run out of other amusements!

Missing work is the only part that is frustrating. I’m in the middle of a couple of big projects, and while work is understanding, there are still things that I need to get done in the next two weeks. Which means I’ll end up doing work at home and possibly have to go in on the weekend to play catch-up. Ah well, it’s a good job; I enjoy…hrm…perhaps that’s too strong… I *appreciate* what we’re doing and it’s worth it.

So, I may be around the interwebs a bit more than usual in the next two weeks. Say hi! And if you’re downtown (I’m looking at you Heidi and Alicia!) and want to catch lunch, I do get noon-1:30pm free if I’m not assigned to a panel.

Let the court-imposed sort-of vacation begin!

Cross-Country Connections: From My Car

Cross-Country Connections is a Biodork weekly blog entry dedicated to telling stories in pictures of three family members – me, my sister and Mom – living in very different locations across the country. Every week we choose a different theme and then take or contribute a personal photo that fits the theme. This week’s theme is From My Car.

From me in Minneapolis, Minnesota:

Late night temptation on the way home from dinner.

From Erin in Bellingham, Washington:

This is the view down my street, taken as I was pulling out of my drive way. The hill is a good 20% grade headed into a beautiful trail system. If the sky were clear, we’d be seeing the mountains in Canada….. but since its the Pacific Northwest, we don’t see those too often.

From Mom in Carbondale, Illinois:

Taken in the Middle of Utah last summer.  I had half-a tank of gas but knew I couldn’t take the chance.  I really was reminded of those movies where you see the sign “Last gas for 400 miles.” Think Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter  Desolate place – but at least they had alpacas outside.

Upcoming Show: Atheists Talk with David Silverman

Imma be on the radio again tomorrow! I’m actually pretty excited to sit in on this interview; we’re speaking with David Silverman, the current president of American Atheists. He’s going to talk about the upcoming Reason Rally in Washington D.C., which is an event that the Hubby and I are considering attending next March. From the Reason Rally website:

The intent is to unify, energize, and embolden secular people nationwide, while dispelling the negative opinions held by so much of American society… and having a damn good time doing it! It will be the largest secular event in world history. There will be music, comedy, great speakers, and lots of fun… and it’s free!

The three main goals of the rally are:

  • To encourage attendees (and those who can’t make it) to come out of the closet as an atheist, or at least a supporter of secular values.
  • To dispel stereotypes – there is no one “True Atheist” no matter what your pastor or parent may tell you. We will have non-theists from all political persuasions, ethnicities, genders, and backgrounds. We will show that there are atheists in every American demographic.
  • Legislative equality. We want to show the country that atheists can run for office and adequately represent theists, just as theists in office can represent atheists proudly and openly. We deserve a seat at the table just like theists, and we hope this rally can put our values in the radar of American voters, who may one day elect an atheist to public office.

The 2008 American Religious Identification Survey estimates that 12% of Americans identify as atheist or agnostic. According to google.com/publicdata there are 307,006,550 people in the United States. 12% of that is 36.8 million people who identify as atheist/agnostic.

That number sounds large, but it still seems pretty lonely being a non-believer when I’m outside of the internet or my close circle of friends. I feel a bit sad when I hear coworkers talking so freely about going to church on Sunday or going to a Bible study this or that evening, while I hesitate to share the exciting news that I’m a radio show host! because the next comment is “Really? For what?” And then there’s that sinking feeling when I realize that I’ve just shared a secular viewpoint that is not appreciated by the majority of people in the conversation. Also, there are the often innocently asked but ultimately silly or annoying or frustrating or laughable or offensive questions revolving around my atheism. Like the question I received from someone at work when I told them that I had visited Asissi, Italy. They looked confused and asked “But why? You’re an atheist. What did you do there?”

I know a handful of people who think that they don’t know any atheists (hah!). Heck, I spoken to atheists who think they’re the only atheist they know!

If we can get a large enough number of people to the Reason Rally, not only do we have a fun time at a secular event with other non-theists, but we show the world that there are more of us around than they may think. We show them that people they know are atheists. We show them that we’re happy, healthy and not afraid or ashamed to tell the world that we don’t need a god to make us good, moral, upstanding human beings. We show them that we can know joy, exhilaration, peace and love without any sort of supernatural presence or interference. We show them that there is an entire group of us who are willing to fight to keep religion out of our government. And I imagine we’ll suprise the heck out of ourselves when we look around the mall that day and think…oh wow – there really are a lot of us!

So yeah.

Reason Rally. David Silverman. This Sunday, 9am on 950AM KTNF. You can listen to the show live or find us on iTunes under “Atheists Talk”.

CUP #19 Answer and CUP #20

Let’s find out who’s still playing on the weekend, shall we?

The winner of yesterday’s CUP is CARLY, with her answer of “pepsi sign on abeverage cooler!”

I thought I had taken a picture of the entire vending machine, but apparently I just zoomed in on the logo. This is one of those 6-7′ high machines that you can find in many cafeterias.

I very specifically was looking for a Pepsi logo on a vending machine. The dots in the close-up image are specific to that type of printing and surface. But I’m giving it to everyone who guessed anything to do with the pepsi logo/soda can.

Carly gets 100 points for posting the first completely correct answer, plus 5 points for being fricking adorable in her commentary on her typing error.

Steve (from Facebook), Vicki, Jeremy, GroundlessPossibilities, Noelle, Ellie, Michelle, Whitney and Erin all get 25 points for correctly identifying the pepsi logo.

GroundlessPossibilities and Michelle get an extra 10 points for siding with the beverage dispenser/vending machine crowd.

Jeremy gets +5 points for being silly. Jeremy you would have gotten more points if you had made a joke about Sarkozy’s height and something about how this is what a regular pepsi can looks like to him. 😀

Well done, all!

Visit the CUP Winners Page for complete scoring and player rankings.

There will be NO CUP on Sunday! The answer for CUP #20 will be posted on Monday.

CUP #20 – What is this crazy thing?

CUP #19 Answer and CUP #20

CUP #18 Answer and CUP #19

The winner of yesterday’s CUP is Lance Finney with his very speedy answer of Scissors!

Lance wins 100 points. Congratulations, Lance!

Here’s the rest of the points:

Erin gets 30 points for also guessing scissors.

Carly, Vicki, Jeremy, Judi, GroundlessPossibilities and Ellie all get 15 points for playing, but no points for their guesses.

Jude gets 20 points for making me have to google “The top of a Mr. Potato Head mask”.

And I’ve tabulated all of the results from the past two CUPs (not counting today’s points for scissors; I’ll put those in tonight). You can always visit the CUP Winners page for full rankings and all-time points. Below are our current Top 5 Ranking Players:

And now for CUP #19!

What are we looking at here?

CUP #18 Answer and CUP #19

CUP #17 Answer and CUP #18

Okay guys, I had computer issues last night, so I didn’t get the scores tabulated from yesterday. Hopefully I’m going to get my RAM installed correctly this evening and I’ll have access to my scoresheets at that point.

But, you don’t care about that – you want to see the answer to yesterday’s Close-Up Photo!

And the answer is….

I would have accepted “top of a coffee carafe”, “the depressor on the top of a coffee pot” or something similar. I am not selecting one 100-point winner today because I thought Erin had it, but upon closer inspection it wasn’t quite right, but she was the first to move away from the popular “Stapler” answer. Then Whitney was close, but the wording was a little wonky, then I believe Christopher’s answer was spot on, but posted many hours later than Erin and Whitney.

SO…

I am awarding 50 points to Erin, and 75 points to Whitney and Christopher. Congratulations, you guys. Also, you all drink too much coffee. 😉

Also, Erin gets an extra 10 points for refering someone new to my blog who commented and referenced her.

Everyone else (Steve from Facebook, and Carly, Vicki, Doug, Noelle, GroundlessPossibilities, and Ellie) gets 25 points for playing.

And now for CUP #18!

What is this?

Happy guessing!

CUP #17 Answer and CUP #18

CUP #16 Answer and CUP #17

In the final hours of the contest, Ben Zvan, first time player nails the answer to yesterday’s CUP:

The back of a waverunner/personal watercraft/jet ski, specifically the steering nozzle. It’s what makes the jet ski “go”. From e-how.com (bolding is mine):

When the engine begins to run, it turns what is called an impeller, located inside and to the rear of the jet ski. The impeller is composed of curved blades, much like a propeller, only they take water into the jet ski rather than push it out. The blades of the impeller turn at a rapid speed and suck in water through a whole in the bottom of the jet ski. This water is then propelled out of the rear of the craft through a movable steering nozzle. The water comes out with such force that it puts pressure on the water outside the craft. Equal pressure is then exerted on the water craft, and it is pushed forward. In most jet skis, the impeller can be reversed in order to slowly move the jet ski in a backwards direction.

Okay, here’s how the points are going to work out:

Ben gets 100 points for his correct answer plus 50 points for being a new player. Welcome, Ben!

Everyone else (Judi, Vicki, Ellie, Doug and Erin) gets 25 points for playing and additional points go out to:

Noelle – 5 points for noting that the “motor part” seemed awfully clean. I thought that was a heck of a clue!

Carly5 points for randomly saying “jet” in her answer.

I will update the CUP Winners page with the new points later tonight and post the rankings tomorrow.

And now for CUP #17!
