…and pickpockets and scam artists and people cutting the bottom out of my backback and crowded trains and…woah, woah, woah.

Ah, the internet!  The leader in unsubstantiated claims, dramatic horror stories, and one-sided viewpoints!

The Hubby and I spent waaaaay too much time last night browsing the interwebs and getting worked up about being American tourists in Italy.  We learned that we wear grubby, unattractive clothing in our day-to-day dress, that we’re going to be pickpocketed by children, mothers with babies and sleazy men, that the Hubby  is going to get drugged and dragged off to a den of prostituzione where he’ll be forced to buy high-priced drinks for women and get conned into sleeping with them, and that I’m going to get groped by every man on the street (Damn, I’m good!). 

So we’ll be on guard for pickpockets and scam artists.  We’ve got our tiny over-the-shoulder bags for the camera and other small semi-valuables, under-the-clothes hidey spots for our passports, credit cards and the bulk of our cash and we’re only packing one backpack each for our clothing.  In Rome we’ll try to avoid highly-packed trains and obvious distractions by potential theives.

All good.

But I really do need to go shopping!

I had planned to bring a couple pairs of jean shorts, several t-shirts and Teva sandals for daily wear, and one simple black dress with cheap but cute strappy black sandals for a nice evening dinner.  The Hubby had planned two pairs of cargo shorts, several t-shirts, Teva sandals and his favorite baseball cap for daily wear, as well as a pair of black slacks, a short sleeve dress shirt and leather dress shoes for dinner. 

No, no, no – what were we thinking!?  All the websites are saying that if we dress like this we’ll be pickpocketed, scammed, and beggars will trail us like rats after the pied piper.  Oh, and the nice, non-scamming Italians will scorn us, sell us crap products at higher prices, or just ignore us.  Le sigh.

I have business casual clothing that could pass, but they’re a little on the business side and are all made of heavier materials appropriate for Minnesota’s four seasons of fall, winter, spring and air-conditioning.  I only own one cute sundress that might qualify as Italian “casual wear”.

I hate spending money on clothing.  Some of my favorite dress pants are from garage sales and second-hand shops.  I just don’t see the point in spending $50 (and higher) on a pair of jeans that I could get at the Salvation Army for $6!  Target’s 30-75% clearance racks rock, and even boutiques and higher-end department stores have kick-ass sales now and then.  I don’t buy used-looking clothing, I just don’t buy this season’s $100 shirts because I can always find something similar for $20. 

It’s not that the Hubby and I dress like slobs – far from it!  Some of our clothing are just American phenomena, I guess.  Like day-to-day donning of baseball caps, tennis shoes, t-shirts with logos/designs and jean shorts.  I also learned that tight pony tails are looked down upon as sloppy and the last resort of someone who slept through her alarm clock.  Makeup isn’t just for special occasions in Italy (but colored fingernail polish is), and almost every website we visited said that I need to have a large scarf that can serve as a shawl – not only for cooler evenings, but because many churches in Italy require covered shoulders for men and women. 

So, our “fancy” outfits still alright for dinners, but we need to rethink our daytime attire.  Aside from my one summer dress, I have a pair of light black pants and a pair of dressy, flowing capri pants which should be fine for most days, but I need one or two lightweight, summery blouses, and a pair of black and/or brown comfy walking shoes that will match all of my outfits.  The Hubby needs a pair of stylish light-weight pants and/or tailored khaki shorts and a pair of loafers.  I guess we’re going with what I would consider preppy/yuppie style for most days. 

But I’m still packing a pair of jean shorts and a t-shirt, just in case everyone is wrong 🙂  We’re Americans, people are going to be able to guess that we’re Americans and we won’t be ashamed to be known as Americans.  But as one site suggested, to lessen our chances of being ripped off, and to avoid unwanted, unflattering attention, maybe we don’t be those Americans – loud, rude, sloppy, expecting the world to conform to our needs and desires.  I bet that a smile and kind voice can go a long way in the fashion capitol of the world.  

Even if I’m dressed like an American.

    Don’t stress about it too much.
    Here’s the thing. They’re going to know you’re a tourist no matter how much you try to hide it. The con artists know the signs for “American trying not to look American” as well as they do “clueless American.” But at the end of the day, they are no worse than con artists and pickpockets in the US. Wait…I take that back…the one time Alex and I were the target of a pickpocketing, the guy was so bad at it that we ended up shaming him on a train.
    Behave like you would in any big city, be aware of your valuables and where you are. Assume that everyone is trying to sell you something, even if they claim they aren’t. Take pictures, be a tourist, have fun. Be as polite to people as they are to you, and ssume that any jerks are individuals, and not part of a cultural jerk-dom.
    As for the groping in Italy….Ok…at least in Florence, that was totally true. I was with my host father (who for all intents and purposes appeared to be my father there), and some guy pinched my butt. Right as I was standing next to my former Hitler Youth host father. I couldn’t help but be more amused by the audacity than offended.

    I agree with Madleine. Be yourself and enjoy the trip. The more one tries “not to look like a tourist,” the less fooled everyone around is. How many times does life really present the opportunity to be a tourist? Savour it. It feels good to be clueless (and totally open about it).

    While Italy is famous for its temperamental (i.e. crazy) drivers, loose morals and streets filled with pickpockets, those are stereotypes just like the ones you read about the “loud, rude, sloppy” Americans.

    I know you are a bit worried (I will admit here, it amuses me a bit) – but don’t be. You’ll love it, no matter what you will end up wearing. No. 1 rule of foreign travel – be comfortable! Who gives a rat’s ass about looking fashionable if you have planned to walk 37.8 miles in a day? You know what those Italian bombshells in 4-inch heels would do? They’d take a taxi!

    But being ready to cover ones shoulders and knees (and preferably toes) is priceless. Because the apron the churches lend to ignorant Americans are NASTY.

    Oi, despite the obvious jitters, I’d trade with you in a second! Make sure to take a million pictures, like a proper tourist! I can’t wait to read your stories.

    Многие любители «домашней» аквакультуры, планируя пруд на своем участке, стараются сделать его поглубже, наверное, следуя известной пословице, что, дескать, рыба ищет где глубже, а человек где лучше. Но, к сожалению, народная мудрость и биология не всегда идут рука об руку и приверженцы прудов с «конкретной» глубиной совершая, вроде бы одну ошибку, получают сразу несколько неприятных последствий, которых можно было бы избежать, если знать некоторые законы взаимодействия среды и организмов ее населяющих.
    Разберемся по порядку. В глубоких прудах (глубже 3 м) выход товарной рыбы будет ниже ожидаемого, даже если кормить, удобрять и увеличить плотность посадки. И вот почему. Дело в том, что планктон, как растительный, так и животный, составляющий большую часть кормовой базы пруда, обитает далеко не во всей водной толще, а только в относительно узком приповерхностном слое, который в среднем составляет около 1,5 метра (об этом будет отдельная заметка). Так что для аквакультуры важен не столько объем пруда, сколько его площадь. Зная эту продуктивную глубину, следует также понимать, что ее возможности по обеспечению рыбы кормом ограничены. Поэтому, если, желая вырастить больше рыбы, вы зарыбите больше потенциальных возможностей вашего пруда, то рыба будет голодать и плохо расти. К тому же в плотно посаженном ослабленном стаде начнут активно развиваться различные инфекционные и паразитарные заболевания. Отход (гибель рыбы) увеличится.
    Если для увеличения продуктивности фито и зоопланктона вы решите вносить в водоем удобрения, то здесь большая глубина, сделает это мероприятие менее эффективным, поскольку концентрация биогенов в продуктивной зоне будет ниже, т.к. значительная их часть будет распределена вне этой зоны и планктоном усвоена не будет, а значит и понесенные затраты заметно не увеличат прирост рыбной продукции.
    Кроме этого, в глубоком водоеме кормление увеличит накопление ненужной органики и гнилостные процессы, поскольку, чем глубже водоем, тем меньше интенсивность перемешивания придонных слоев воды с верхними насыщенными кислородом. А в бескислородной стоячей воде запускаются механизмы разложения органики с выделением метана, сероводорода и прочих неполезных для обитателей пруда веществ. Рыба начинает задыхаться и болеть. Если при этом кормление не прекратить, то процессы гниения будут нарастать и в итоге может отравится весь водоем, что повлечет массовую гибель рыбы (замор). Конечно, в такой ситуации, ни о каких донных организмах, которыми бы питались карп, лещ, осетровые и т.п. речь не идет.
    Не лишним будет также напомнить, что выкапывая пруд 5 м и более мы вторгаемся в недра матушки Земли, а это наказуемое деяние без разрешения уполномоченных органов власти. А получив такое разрешение мы становимся не рыбоводами, или, например, пермакультуристами, а пользователями недр со всеми вытекающими последствиями (не дешевыми).
    Таким образом, даже если вы не желаете на своем будущем водоеме заниматься товарной аквакультурой, а склонны к естественности и водоем вам нужен все больше для созерцания и поиска смысла (определяйтесь сами чего), все же не стоит делать его глубже необходимого минимума для безопасной зимовки ваших питомцев. И исходить надо из того, что глубина непромерзающего слоя должна быть не меньше 1,2 м, а какая глубина промерзания зависит от вашей климатической зоны. Могу сказать, что в условиях ЮФО достаточная глубина пруда составляет 2 м.

    “A heartbreak isn’t always as loud as a bomb exploding. Sometimes, it could be as quiet as a feather falling and nobody hears it except you.” Anyone who knows Terri knows how much heartbreak she has faced in her life. She has spoken so openly to all of us sharing her vulnerability, as she knows being alone with your pain isn’t a nice place to be. In turn she has helped so many…now it’s our turn to help her. Terri and I have known each other for many years, she is best friends with one of my cousins, but we became much closer when in March 2017, I had just lost my first precious angel baby and posted about my grief and pain; Terri reached out to say she had also just miscarried. Through our shared grief we formed a strong bond and from that a real friendship grew. We would talk daily and we helped guide each other towards the light on some of the darkest days of our lives. Terri and I both went on to miscarry two more babies each. All of our miscarriages were around a similar time to each other, and we both still say that we are so thankful we had each other to get through our heartbreak. In May 2019 I finally welcomed my beautiful daughter Harriet-Terri into the world. My precious baby has healed my broken heart, I have never known a love like it, she brings light into every single day, and that’s what I want for Terri. Terri has been under fertility hospitals since 2013, she firstly had 6 months of a fertility drug to help produce more eggs, sadly this didn’t work. She was then accepted for IVF, but heartbreakingly her beautiful baby sister passed away. For obvious reasons having a baby was the last thing on Terri’s mind, she needed to grieve. In 2016 Terri and Wayne got married and felt ready to continue on their IVF journey. The first round produced 4 embryos, sadly one didn’t take and three resulted in miscarriages. After Terri’s third miscarriage the hospital ran more tests and discovered she had a balanced translocation; an abnormality between two chromosomes which means if Terri releases an egg containing the abnormal chromosomes her body miscarries. Following on from this, the next step was to have pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD IVF), this is where they collect and check eggs to check for any abnormalities. Unfortunately, the Liverpool Women’s hospital don’t specialise in this treatment and so Terri and Wayne were then transferred to Guys and St. Thomas hospital in London. Terri has had two more rounds of PGD IVF which have both heartbreakingly failed to produce any “good eggs”. Since the discovery of the BT, Terri has also been told she has low Anti-Mullerian Hormone or AMH and low follicle count which means her egg reserve is low and the eggs in which she does produce are of poor quality. Initially Terri was told she had a 1in8 chance of getting a good egg, but because of the three things stacked against her, the odds are now very low. Terri and Wayne have been trying now for 7 years and it has really created a sadness that they don’t deserve, despite this Terri never lets go of the hope and belief that she will be a mum! They have both now come to the conclusion that donor eggs are their best option of ever having a baby considering everything that is against them, and having exhausted all possible avenues for using Terri’s own eggs. The process to have a donor egg is so expensive and this is why I am trying to raise what they need which is ?20,000. It took a lot of persuasion to eventually get Terri to agree to me doing this for them. They didn’t want to feel like they were asking for handouts and were determined to save the money they need themselves however, this would take them years to save that kind of money. They have been through so much and experienced more heartache than most go through in their entire lives, let alone a few years as they have! Terri is one of the nicest, kindest and most authentic souls you’ll ever meet. She would do anything for anyone and is so supportive to others even when she is going through her own struggles, I have experienced this love for others first hand. So, this is my payback to Terri for being there for me and helping me through my darkest days. She doesn’t believe that we’ll raise the ?20,000 but I want to prove her wrong. I really want Terri to realise how loved she is by so many and how many people want this baby for her. Устройство и принцип работы станции Насосная станция «АКВАРОБОТ М» состоит из следующих основных узлов: Погружного вибрационного электронасоса «БАВЛЕНЕЦ». Гидроаккумулятора. Устройства «PM/5-3W» (объединяющего реле давления, манометр, штуцер). Обратного клапана. Погружной вибрационный электронасос состоит из 3-х основных узлов: ярма, вибратора и основания. Подача воды осуществляется из напорной камеры, ограниченной резиновым клапаном и поршнем. Монтаж и ввод в эксплуатацию Для ввода в эксплуатацию насосных станций «АКВАРОБОТ М» необходимо: Подсоединить станцию к водопроводной сети потребителя. Для этого присоединить выход устройства «PM/5-3W» (внутренняя резьба 1″) к основной трубе системы водоснабжения потребителя, объединяющей все точки водоразбора. Соединить выходной патрубок насоса с обратным клапаном, установленным на устройстве «PM/5-3W». Для этого предпочтительно использовать гибкие пластиковые шланги диаметром 20 мм. Для облегчения надевания конец шланга можно размягчить в горячей воде. Концы шланга затяните хомутами. Для обеспечения плотной затяжки рекомендуем подложить полоску, вырезанную из шланга. Присоединять насос к жестким трубам следует только через гибкий шланг длиной не менее 2 метров. Опустить насос в источник воды. Руководствуйтесь Схемой установки насоса в водоем. Глубина погружения насоса не должна превышать 3 метров. Расстояние от гидроаккумулятора до зеркала воды в водоеме по вертикали не должно превышать 30 метров. Расстояние от дна водоема должно быть не меньше 30 см. Для крепления насоса в водоеме привяжите подвеску (3) (входит в комплект станции) к проушине насоса. Другой конец подвески закрепите на перекладине (7), как показано на схеме установки насоса в водоем. При погружении насоса в скважину, наденьте на насос защитное кольцо (9). Скрепите кабель (5), шланг (6) и подвеску связками (2) через промежутки 1 – 2 метра; Подключите станцию к источнику электропитания с напряжением 220 В. Станция готова к работе.
