Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) has taken the bold step of being the most prominent asshole to try to use the tragedy in Colorado to further a political agenda. That political agenda is talk about how atheists are destroying the country. From HuffPo:
“People say … where was God in all of this?” Gohmert said. “We’ve threatened high school graduation participations, if they use God’s name, they’re going to be jailed … I mean that kind of stuff. Where was God? What have we done with God? We don’t want him around. I kind of like his protective hand being present.”
That’s right. Someone like Max Nielson challenging his high school graduation prayer are the reason some cruel, heartless man shot dozens of people at a movie. And Gohmert apparently lives in a strange alternate universe where people trying to get others not to force them to pray is exactly like sending someone to prison for saying the word “God”.
The tragedy is horrific enough, using it to score political points is despicable.

The theatre where the shooting took place is only something like 12 miles from Littleton, where the Columbine shooting took place.

A San Diego woman who identified herself as James Holmes’ mother told ABC News she had awoken unaware of the shooting and had not yet been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.
“You have the right person,” she said, apparently speaking on gut instinct. “I need to call the police… I need to fly out to Colorado.”
I don’t know what to make of that, but I am sure we will hear more. Rare to have the first quote not be something like he was quiet and a nice guy. Rarer still for the negative quote to come from mom. Wonder what she knew.

UPDATE: People think that the shooter knew the movie because he waited to start shooting until a particular scene. It seems more likely to me that he simply waited for a big action scene, knowing that there would be one.
UPDATE2: Suspect’s mother’s name is Arlene.
UPDATE3: Suspect was driving a car with Tennessee plates, so probably was not from Denver and hadn’t been living there for a long time. Mother was in San Diego. He was from everywhere.

I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday. I saw the terror on bystanders’ faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change. It seems the group believes children who follow the adventures of Hogwarts’ young witches and wizards will grow up to become spell-casting Satan-worshippers themselves… You know, in the same way that watching Dexter turns people into serial killers or CSI turns them into crime-solvers.
Asking supporters to call and email Lexington County Council members demanding they put an end to the Witch-a-thon and decrease the library’s funding, Columbia Christians for Life indicated that any council member who disagrees should be voted out of office. The group backed up their demands and proved God’s apparent dislike for the Potter series by including several Bible verses from Deuteronomy and other Old Testament books.
Can I just start with the fact that Harry Potter is over? Like, that was so five years ago! Or last summer. I mean, I still care because I grew up in the Harry Potter fandom and some absurd portion of my brain has, as the Christians fear, been taken over by Harry Potter. But, come on! Find something new to be pissed off about guys!
