Godless Bitches Do Harassment

Due to some technical issues, there was a longer than usual delay between episodes of the Godless Bitches podcast. That meant, however, that they posted two episodes last week. Not surprisingly, Beth, Jen, and Tracie spend a good bit of time in both episodes on the topic du mois, harassment policies.

What they’re talking about isn’t what you’re going to find on the topic here, either. A lot of this is a nuts-and-bolts discussion of what is and what isn’t harassment and what should or shouldn’t be done about harassment. In other words, it directly addresses the concerns that many commenters in the atheist/skeptic blogosphere have said they have with the adoption of this sort of policy.

So, if those are concerns of yours, or if you just like some solid discussion with the occasional rant, go listen to the last couple of Godless Bitches episodes. The harassment talk is about the first hour of this show* and starts at about minute 50 on this one. Enjoy.

*I should disclose that I’m mentioned in the first show, though only in passing. Also, I’m heartily amused by Beth’s(?) pause of “I know I’m going to get this wrong” before mispronouncing my name. I’ve so been there.

I believe it’s recognition of the fact that they’re pissing off the right people. Here’s their About:

The Godless Bitches podcast was created by Beth Presswood to focus on feminist issues from a secular perspective and to help increase the presence of women’s voices in the secular community. It is sponsored by the Atheist Community of Austin and feature regular contributions from Jen Peeples, Tracie Harris, Lynnea Glasser and others.

I know they are trying to use it in a reclamatory fashion. I’m just not sure that we’re ‘reclaiming’ so much as giving misogynists permission to use it by association.

I haven’t had a chance to hear the podcasts in question yet (for some reason my podcatcher is marking them as “listened to” before I actually hear them)… but how does someone mispronounce “Stephanie”? 🙂

Although I have to say that I felt that there was still significant blocks against introducing professional standards to skeptic events. Maybe it was just saying, well people are going to SAY this, but I feel that with a lot of the content of the two podcasts talking somewhat approvingly of non-professional conduct, that there was quite a bit of doubt on that regard.

Stephanie, I’ve been hearing “ZEE-vuhn” in my head, and based on that pronunciation also imagining you as an evil red-skinned alien piloting a giant robot.

As for the podcasts, I’ve listened to the first one and I once again am reminded that Tracie is my favorite of the Atheist Experience co-hosts. I wasn’t sure that her admonishment to be direct with people wouldn’t be used as an excuse for men to walk up to women and demand sex, but otherwise good stuff.

I’m a big fan of the ACA’s work. GB is not necessarily life-changing enlightenment, but it is very solid programming. Of the many, many co-hosts on the ACA’s three podcasts/broadcasts (all of whom I find interesting and enjoyable), GB has two of the top 4 (in my opinion).

If anyone has read the heicart Wolowitz post, you need to listen to these episodes. Tracie has an epic rant that, it seems, was recorded prior to writing the Wolowitz post. Very much worth the time to download if you aren’t a subscriber of the podcast already.
