Kim Davis is like a rock

Kentucky clerk Kim Davis has been all over the news recently for her repeated refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Last week, Federal Judge David Bunning ruled that Davis was in contempt of court and ordered federal marshals to take her into custody. While she was in custody, five of the six deputy clerks who work under Davis agreed to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples (with the exception of, surprise surprise, Davis’ son). She remained in jail until Tuesday, when Judge Bunning ordered her conditional release:

An order from U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning said on Tuesday that Davis would be released after serving six days in jail on the condition that she “shall not interfere in any way, directly or indirectly, with the efforts of her deputy clerks to issue marriage licenses to all legally eligible couples.”

Unfortunately, if her attorneys are correct, Davis has not changed her mind, and continues to claim that it is a violation of her conscience and religious beliefs to have her name appear on marriage licenses for same-sex couples. Which means it is likely that Davis will prevent her deputy clerks from issuing any licenses with her name on them. One of her deputy clerks, Brian Davis, has said he will continue to issue licenses to same-sex couples even if she orders him not to. How this will play out remains to be seen, as Davis won’t return to work until Friday at the earliest (and more than likely on Monday). Since it looks like this ridiculous roller-coaster of anti-gay prejudice will continue to plague Rowan County LGB folks for a while longer, I have a present for Mrs. Davis-a modified version of Bob Seger’s ‘Like A Rock‘.  Tweaked in her honor, this tune will be the perfect lullaby for her to sing when she finds herself in jail again:

Stood there defiantly
Sweatin’, but still devoted
Felt like a hero to the fundies
Felt like God’s number one
The height of summer
I’d never felt that strong
Like a rock

I was on my 4th marriage
Didn’t have a care
Working for 80 grand
But not a drop of love to spare
But I was lean and
Solid everywhere
Like a rock

My hands were steady
My eyes were clear and bright
My bigotry had purpose
My steps were quick and light
And I held firmly to my hate
To what I felt was right
Like a rock

Like a rock, I was strong as I could be
Like a rock, fuckin’ queers never got to me
Like a rock, my hate shined for all to see
Like a rock

And I stood arrow straight
Unencumbered by the weight
Of all these gay people and their lovers
I stood proud, I stood tall
For my lord Jesus, I’ll take the fall
I still believed in my dreams

Twenty years later
Don’t they yet know?
Twenty years later
I still say NO HOMO
I sit and I wonder sometimes
Why they ain’t gone

And this one time, late at night
When I’m bathed in god’s great light
Judge Bunning came a callin’, gave me a fright
And I recall
I recall

Like a rock, I’ll go away for eternity
Like a rock, chargin’ away from modernity
Like a rock, an imaginary god is all I need
Like a rock

Like a rock, I know zombie Jesus has my back
Like a rock, hard against the Constitution
Like a rock, I see myself leadin’ a revolution
Like a rock

One of her deputies is her son? How entirely unsurprising that she’s not only a bigot, but also a corrupt nepotist – those two things seem to go hand in hand.

I can’t even hate on her boy. He’s got to live with her, and if he defies her he’s got some serious Hell to pay from that woman. So rather than fight with her stubborn ass, he’s just going along to get along.

Unless he’s as much of a true believer as her, in which case,
    f* him.
