*This* is Christian Love?

Trigger Warning:  Homophobia

Remember that letter from a loving Christian father to his children where he says he will continue proudly loving his kids if they are gay?

Here is a story that is the polar opposite of that.

I’m in full on raging Hulk Smash mode after reading the story of Kelly, a mixed race lesbian whose body has been devastated by Lupus. When she came out of the closet, thinking she’d be accepted by her parents because she’s mixed race, her father said nothing and her mother kicked her out of the house.  Yeah, once again, a so-called “Christian” displays that love and compassion that’s supposedly associated with Christianity.  Fucking vile behavior that is. To bring such pain to another human being…you own damn child for fuck’s sake…all because you can’t deal with the fact they didn’t turn out the way you want?  All because their sexuality doesn’t match what is seen as normative?  It doesn’t hurt a fucking fly. It doesn’t affect anyone but her.  But no, such hatred is so intense, so unrelenting, so uncompassionate, it transforms formerly loving parents into vile, hateful, homophobes.

It gets worse. Kelly’s aunt was under the impression she was receiving money from her church, as a fundraiser had been created ostensibly in Kelly’s name.  Kelly pays half her income out to past medical debt. She’s been seeing none of this fundraising money.  To show her aunt this truth, Kelly taped a conversation she had with her mother.  Warning:  this will turn your stomach-

“You know Kelly, I tell you what.  If you die before me…you know what, when you get dead, we’re going to go through your house and we are going to strip it, and that girl won’t have a pot to piss in…you little hefer, you have put my life through hell.  Gay shit.  I hate gay shit. I am not going to live my life telling you that I believe in two women being married.  It is not in the Bible, it is a damned SIN!   And I am ashamed you live with a damn woman… You go straight to Hell!  Go to Hell, Bitch!”

I have no words.  This is just…it makes me cry.  I’m sorry Kelly.  I’m so sorry for you. You don’t deserve this. You are a good person. The problem is with your hateful mother, who ought to read the letter from a Christian father above.

What can be said? I weep for Kelly. In a way I weep for her mother, too.

So much hate and anger that her relationship with her daughter is completly (and probably irreversibly) ruined. By her own hand. As a father, I can’t but pity her. I certainly hope that Kelly has a storng support structure.

I completely understand the expression of sorrow for her mother. She may be displaying a horrible lack of compassion towards her daughter, but she also loses out on not being able to share in her daughters’ experiences. I’m not a parent, but I imagine many parents want to experiences the joys and sorrows of life with their kids. I don’t think it’s a one way street where only one party benefits from the relationship.

I don’t think the mom, in this situation, is remotely interested in “sharing” in the relationship. She has power and hate and thinks it makes her stong. Not to belittle what is happening, but in fiction sometimes there is truth. I’m thinking Sith Lord.
This mom is very real life Sith to me.

“You have put my life through hell.”
Uh… try the opposite? It’s amazing that these homophobes can’t muster up the slightest bit of empathy to see others’ perspectives, and it’s so devastating to those around them. Is there a genuine support fund for Kelly that one can donate to?
