Hi! I'm a tech guy, skeptic, feminist, gamer and atheist, and love OSS and science of all stripes. I enjoy a good bit of whargarbl now and again, and will occasionally even seek it out. I am also apparently responsible for the death of common sense on the internet. My bad.
I have opinions. So do you. You want to share them with me. I would like to do likewise. Please don't expect a platform for proselytizing that will go unchecked and unchallenged, though. Contact me via the clicky thingies under my banner.

Ketchup? On Mac and Cheese? 0.o That’s… Ai. Wow.
Mmmm, ketchup and sliced hot-dogs in KD, that’s good eats. Coincidentally, I am also from Ontario. I will, however, occasionally substitute hot sauce, depends on my mood. Not sure if Kraft Dinner is appropriate for the holidays, but it sure as hell got me through college.
On the other hand, my friend’s mom makes a homemade mac ‘n’ cheese for Christmas that has brought me back to their house every year. It is truly magnificent. So no, its definitely not a “black thing”.
Ketchup?! On macaroni and cheese.
Come on. Really? You’re not kidding, are you?
Ketchup on Kraft Dinner (aka Kraft Mac & Cheese) is not a unique phenomenon. Mustard too, in some cases. So, no, nobody here is kidding.
But I much prefer homemade mac and cheese and no adulterating cheapo condiments.
I make an awesome homemade mac & chz with bacon; it’s basically butter, cheese, heavy cream, pound of bacon and noodles, but oh so delicious. Sometime I use swiss and add carmalized onions. For add ins to Kraft Dinner I use hot dogs, ground beef & onions with BBQ sauce, or peas and/or corn for a veggie dish. And now I’m hungry…
Wow, this was a bad thread to find when I can’t duck out for lunch. And Jen, that sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen, can I have some? Pleeeeease.
I was going to ick at the ketchup and hot dogs but realized that’s not much different from preparing macaroni with tomato sauce and meat balls.
Except for the whole tasting good thing, of course.
I suppose mac and cheese is okay if you can’t get poutine.
I’ve been having constant arguments on FB over Kraft Dinner – namely, the role of ketchup. I feel it’s essential, though sliced hot-dogs are up to you.
Apparently this makes me nuts, or from Ontario.
Am I wrong to prefer Velveeta shells and cheese? o.O (Salmon cakes and Velveeta shells and cheese is the best combo ever.)
We *did* have mac and cheese at our Thanksgiving table. And as much as I would like to say it was in defiance of Robertson, it wasn’t. It was because we ALWAYS have mac and cheese at our urban “family” gatherings. Heck, growing up white in the South, we always had it at real family gatherings.
This year, because we’ve renamed our Thanksgiving gathering “Hogsgiving” we added bacon. Yum.
If I were any less black I’d be clear, and I loooooooooooove me some mac and cheese. Especially when it’s a mix of fontina and cheddar with bacon and caramelized onions. Oh, and fuck Pat Robertson.
I was taught to look down on people who put ketchup on anything other than french fries, hamburgers, and hotdogs (and very, very similar products).
But Jason is right – homemade macaroni and cheese is the best. With a little breaded crust on top that you mix in. And diced red onions. Three types of cheese.
Ohhh, I know what I’m making for supper.
Damn, Pat, your racism isn’t just showing, it’s parading in the streets.
Come on guys, Mac and cheese is super simple. One pound pasta cooked. One pound cheese, shredded (food processor) combine and add enough milk to suit. Then take another half pound of cheese for the topping, mixed with melba toast crumbs. Stuff in the oven until you cannot leave it alone.
Which cheese?
I use the old ripe bits of cheddar left in the frig, mixed with a bit of gouda, some medium cheddar, maybe brick or – well, its not quite the same each time.
By the way, I mean cheese – not prepackaged sliced cheesy food product.
It also passes for a protein/meat on the plate – only add vegetables. And its darn good cold.
I use a bechamel-based cheese sauce when I make macaroni cheese. Dorothy, doesn’t the milk and cheese separate? Do you have to stir it a lot to get a smooth sauce?
Also, cauliflower is an awesome addition. You can even just do plain cauliflower cheese without any macaroni. Best served with bacon and mushrooms.
I completely fail to understand the racist point. If it had been fried chicken and watermelon I would understand the cultural referent. But macaroni cheese? Huh? It reads to me like saying “You black people with your breathing air and eating food, what is it with you weirdos?” Is there something I’m missing, or is this just a huge WTF to everyone else, too?
Anyone else still annnoyed that Kraft dropped the egg noodles from the Kraft Dinner line?
My Italian-American mom made the best mac and cheese from scratch. I never even associated it with African American culture until I attended a “soul food” dinner at age 40. That was also the day that I discovered my love for collard greens; they immediately reminded me of the mustard greens that Mom also cooked regularly.
Never liked mac and cheese, even as a child. Mom had to resort to various threats to make me eat it. Bland and slimy stuff.
I suppose it can be made edible if you add meat, veggies and spices.
I’m guessing some culinary snobbism here.
Like people from my place being called ‘poutine eaters’. Or baloney being ‘welfare meat’.
For us Kraft Dinner / mac and cheese has always been considered ‘student chow’.
Is this recent? There was something from him a few years back (I think it was him, anyway,) about having gone to a restaurant in Harlem and being impressed that they had silverware and napkins and tablecloths and all.
Racist pond scum would be ashamed to be compared to Robertson.
Yeah, that’s from this past Thanksgiving, Kate.
If the mac and cheese is black, it’s over-cooked. If it’s black and fuzzy, it’s time to throw it out.
/experience
Mac and cheese may not be a black thing but it sure is and American thing. KD is a Canadian thing.
I think it’s Robertson trying to be racist, but instead just being too plain stupid to realize that everyone eats mac and cheese.
As a southerner, I have always made a distinction between mac and cheese and baked macaroni. Baked macaroni I have always considered a “black thing” as that was the families I saw serving it rather than the orange stuff.
Pat is part of a long list of people smacking their lips on God’s behalf, claiming the know the future, and repeatedly contradicting themselves. He claims to quote God directly and relays God’s message that the country will go through a large economic collapse. Is God Captain obvious now or what?
Also, what happened to the 2007 nuclear genocide God told him about below?
