Greta Christina on Atheism & Sexuality

Jason and I started watching this wonderful lecture last night, and I tweeted about it then but I wanted to make sure everyone saw it.

The sexual morality of traditional religion tends to be based, not on solid ethical principles, but on a set of taboos about what kinds of sex God does and doesn’t want people to have. And while the sex-positive community offers a more thoughtful view of sexual morality, it still often frames sexuality as positive by seeing it as a spiritual experience. What are some atheist alternatives to these views? How can atheists view sexual ethics without a belief in God? And how can atheists view sexual transcendence without a belief in the supernatural?

I am definitely not the most educated person in the world but this is the rational, honest, calm kind of thinking I try to use every day of my life. I was so glad to see some of my own thoughts and sentiments mirrored in her lecture. Go watch! Learn something about your own and other’s sexuality.

Hat tip to @Carr2D2 for tweeting and Jennifer McCreight (Blag Hag) for uploading it.

Sounds bizarre, jt, searching for transcendent referent, which one would assume would be of ultimate-like importance, and divorce it from what traditions for millenia refer to as related to deities.

Being uncomfortable with X-ianities is ok, but don’t generalize from negative experience with a narrow band of traditionalist approaches to sexuality, monsieur le newlywed…

I’m not going to bother with the video, and only really stopped by to say the ball’s in orac’s court for some time already. I threw down the gauntlet, a couple of commenters haplessly fought on his side. I do not expect you to follow up, nor to reverse your opinion, orac regardless, until bodies pile up in the streets, as it was put in that important gq article i must have referred you all to. But i’m open to further discussion, and certainly would go at orac were he brave or attentive enough to engage.

So i take my leave of you, and repeat my regret at seeing yet another young person of some aptitude pointing it in the wrong direction. Don’t know if i’ll bother checking back as i’ve done since posting several times at orac’s site, i can’t spend time on all misleaders of youth.

Feel free to prod me to comment (doubt it, eh?), though, I can churn it out fast enough, maybe you will relent and influence others to do so, too, on the grave and growing dangers of wireless.

You’re addressing Madame le Newlywed, jerk. You obviously neither watched the video nor read the additional text Jodi wrote.

As far as you “throwing down the gauntlet”, I shouldn’t have to tell you your business of trolling, but posting a single comment on a very old thread (that one I directed you to is from 2008, duh) is not going to get Orac’s attention.

Go ahead and leave. We won’t miss you.

shouldn’t’ve clicked that email notification box…

jerk thibeault, i told you i was not going to bother with the video, your redundant remarks are in line with what you’ve already put out in exchange with myself, worthless and worse

i also said i was merely touching base & waving bye, so extra comments, who cares — you can erase all this, i care little, unless Jodi is bothered, then surely erase it, but make sure she understands about the dangers you yourself won’t own up to!

this “troll” (ok if that’s what i am by your definition, we went through this already, mr. scientist) elicited comments already on that older blog piece, so orac must be aware, unless he’s a surgeon too busy making a bundle off opening skulls to remove psychosomatic tumours…

gevalt (did i use that exclamation already?)

what would your site be minus a “troll”?

what a find finding you on my way to news about Levine

if i am cautiously pessimistic about many things in the world, your behaviour thus far ups the pessimistic part
