I don’t know if you remember that Weezer music video that went massively viral a while back (understandably so — they made extensive use of the stars of other viral videos). Well, a friend showed me today a “remix” version — one with fully twice the internet memes, without somehow coming off like they just took the original, threw a bunch of extra stuff into it, then put it in a blender to see if it would blend.
It’s pretty awesome in its own right. The sheer meme density rivals XKCD.
I really ought to do a piece on internet memes sometime soon. Like, a true scientific paper on them, their provenance, their history, how they spread, how fickle their medium is for what is meme-worthy and what isn’t, etc. Though that sounds like a shitload of work.
Or you could just admit you liek mudkips and call it a night
The sad thing is, I already know that 90% of the memes I’m “in on” trace their origins back to /b/ but I can’t bring myself to hang out there, between all the trolling, sexism and gore. And I suspect writing any sort of paper on internet memes would by necessity involve hanging out at 4chan.
Sigh.
