I’m speaking in Houston at Rice University on Thursday, October 20! The topic: Atheism and Sexuality. It’s free and open to the public. If you’re in the area, I hope to see you soon!

CITY: Houston, TX
DATE: Thursday, October 20
TIME: 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM
TOPIC: Atheism and Sexuality
SUMMARY: The sexual morality of traditional religion tends to be based, not on solid ethical principles, but on a set of taboos about what kinds of sex God does and doesn’t want people to have. And while the sex-positive community offers a more thoughtful view of sexual morality, it still often frames sexuality as positive by seeing it as a spiritual experience. What are some atheist alternatives to these views? How can atheists view sexual ethics without a belief in God? And how can atheists view sexual transcendence without a belief in the supernatural?
LOCATION: 119 Humanities Building, Rice University, 6100 Main St, Houston, TX
HOST: Rice University
COST: Free, and open to the public

The entire condemnation of sex began with Augustine of Hippo in the year circa 300 AD. More recently the Roman Catholic Church made Augustine a saint. This destructive philosophy had its origin in the book of Genesis of the bible. Now it is widespread throughout the Christianized part of the world. The whole reason for the condemnation of sex is for control of human behavior. This control is cloaked in a clever shroud of piety to make people feel guilty about their own sexuality. We must not be deceived by some argument that the Christian churches want to get us to some delusionary heaven, it simply about control. Control, control, control. The Roman Catholic Church does not women to use contraceptives because that means that women will be having sex purely for pleasure and the RCC will lose their “moral authority.”

I understand that for other animals sex is solely for reproduction. But we are not merely rats or rabbits. For humans sex is first and foremost for pleasure as well as bonding two or more people in close personal relationships. Someday we will rid ourselves of the tyrannical abuse of power by religious organizations and have the life we truly deserve.
