“If we care about reality”: Meme from The Way of the Heathen

Stories and imagination are essential parts of our human lives. But if we care about reality, we need to not fool ourselves into thinking our stories are true.

  1. 1

The christian bible was written over 2000 years ago by some charismatic older men with long beards who “believed” they had the absolute truth, at least by the gullible audience who listened to their tales. Now hundreds of millions of people have this “belief” that those men and the generations of interpreters of those biblical verses who followed, have the very truth of the universe, let the evidence be damned.

Too many people who dream up explanations for things, convince themselves that because they “believe” then of course whatever their “beliefs” may be, they are absolutely the truth. Never mind any evidence to the contrary. Greta Christina is correct when she says “….if we care about reality, we need to not fool ourselves into thinking our stories are true.” The term “stories” here could be easily replaced by the term “beliefs.”
