CITY: Minneapolis, MN
DATE: April 5-7 (I’m speaking April 6, and doing panel discussions April 5 and 6)
LOCATION: Wiley Hall, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Minneapolis, MN
EVENT/HOSTS: SkepTech, hosted by CASH (Campus Atheists Skeptics and Humanists)
TOPIC: Arguing Effectively on the Web
SUMMARY: Many atheists think that trying to persuade people out of religion never works, and simply alienates people. But debating believers about their beliefs can be effective — in changing people’s minds about religion, as well as in achieving other goals of the atheist community. When does it makes sense to debate about religion? How should we go about it? What are some specific strategies for arguing on the Web as opposed in in person? And what should our expectations be for what these debates can accomplish?
OTHER SPEAKERS: Zach Weinersmith, PZ Myers, Stephanie Zvan, Hemant Mehta, JT Eberhard, Brianne Bilyeu, Jesse Galef, Maggie Koerth-Baker, Tim Farley, Ben Blanchard, Brendan Murphy, Scott Lohman, and Geeks Without God
COST: This conference is entirely free and open to the public.
