Ophelia Benson Being Impersonated

Some misogynist, anti-feminist asshole has been creating fake Twitter accounts impersonating Ophelia Benson (Butterflies and Wheels), and tweeting under her name.

Ophelia is taking steps via Twitter to stop this… but that takes time. In the meantime, you can help. If you’re on Twitter, please report the following accounts for spam:

And if anyone is still in any doubt about the campaign of harassment against feminist women on the Internet in general and in the atheosphere in particular…

I have reported the accounts and made it clear that impersonation (as opposed to parody) is wrong.

But, do you not think you are jumping the gun by assuming the people doing this are misogynists and anti-feminists? They could just be trolls looking for a cheap thrill.

“How much truth is contained in something can be best determined by making it thoroughly laughable and then watching to see how much joking around it can take. For truth is a matter that can withstand mockery, that is freshened by any ironic gesture directed at it. Whatever cannot withstand satire is false.”
    — Peter Sloterdijk

Same old nonsense. Why exactly would “trolls looking for a cheap thrill” find it by impersonating someone who is a well-known feminist, and the target of misogynist abuse and harassment, but hardly a household name in the world at large?

    “skeptixx”*,
Argument by quotation is unimpressive. Moreover, impersonating someone is not joking, irony or satire; it’s just dishonest and nasty.

*It’s an almost invariable rule that anyone who puts “skeptic”, “rational”, “logic”, etc., or any variation thereon in their nym, is neither skeptical, rational, nor logical. Attempting to make a point by quoting Peter Sloterdijk, who was a disciple of Osho, as well as the originator of bizarre eugenicist and “libertarian” proposals, raises suspicions that you are no exception to the rule.

    Sorry, blockquote fail.

A troll who opts to use misogynistic tactics and acts like an anti-feminist is a misogynist, even if they help themselves go to sleep at night by saying they were ‘just kidding’.

If I drop an n-bomb in the middle of an argument with a black man, or call a woman a bitch or a whore*, because these are hurtful words meant to inflict pain, even if I otherwise support equal rights between genders and races, I’m still at that moment being a fucking racist and misogynist. Get it?

*: I found it… disconcerting as I re-read my comment to realize that I’d auto-censored the racist slur, but didn’t pause typing out the misogynistic ones.

freemage, being anti-feminist does not make you a misogynist. Being anti-women makes you a misogynist (since 2002 when the OED changed the definition after decades of feminists mis-using the word). Before 2002 being anti-women didn’t even qualify for misogyny.

freemage, being anti-feminist does not make you a misogynist.

I’ve yet to come across a self-identified anti-feminist who is not a misogynist; and since feminism is simply the position that women deserve equal treatment and status with men, I’d say that being anti-feminist is being anti-women, and therefore, misogynist.
