Secular Student Alliance Blogathon — and Kitten Photos!

I’m holding my kitten photos hostage.

But it’s for a good cause, I promise. It’s the Secular Student Alliance Blogathon Week!

I write a lot about how wildly awesome the Secular Student Alliance is. And I mean it. In my opinion, they are one of the most effective, efficient, powerful organizations in the secular movement. They seriously get shit done. They have gone from 42 affiliates in 2002 to 365 affiliates in 2012… and 2012 isn’t even half over yet.

Which is a good thing. Because, as SSA Director of Campus Organizing Lyz Liddell says, students aren’t just the future of this movement. Students are the present of this movement. Rates of religious non-belief are skyrocketing in the United States… and that trend is overwhelmingly being led by people 25 and under. Student groups are the ones on the ground, making atheism visible to young people who are questioning their faith… and creating community for these folks when they do leave.

The SSA is awesome. If you want to find out in more more about how awesome they are, read The Unstoppable Secular Students by Lyz Liddell, or My work with the SSA by JT Eberhard.

So Jen McCreight is doing her annual blogging marathon at BlagHag, in which she deprives herself of sleep for charity: making a new post every 30 minutes for 24 hours, with no pre-writing or autoposting allowed. And this time, she’s stepping up the game — and pulling other bloggers into the act. Today officially kicks off SSA Week — which will be so awesome, it has to be ten days long! Bloggers including Ellen Lundgren, Dale McGowan, Ophelia Benson, Natalie Reed, Ian Cromwell, Hank Fox, Leah Libresco and more will be passing the blogathon baton throughout the coming days. Our goal: Raise $100,000 for the Secular Student Alliance by Sunday, June 17. (Todd Stiefel has already kicked in $50,000 — so we’re halfway there!)

Jeff Hawkins and Janet Strauss have a $250,000 matching offer in place for the SSA, so any contribution you make will automatically be doubled. If you have $50, give that. If you have $5, give that. If you don’t have any money, but you’re on Facebook or Twitter, help spread the word. (Twitter hashtag: #SSAWeek .) If you have a blog and want to participate in the blogathon, go to BlagHag and let Jen know.

So what does all this have to do with kitten photos?

I was going to make June a “kitten a day” month on my blog. But now, I’m holding the kitten photos hostage. For every $1,000 that the Secular Student Alliance Blogathon raises, I will post another kitten photo to my blog.

And on the day of my my own shift with the blogathon, I’m going to dial it up. On Tuesday, June 12, from 9am until midnight Pacific time, I will post a new kitten photo for every $100 that the blogathon raises.

And yes, I realize Todd Stiefel just donated $50,000. And no, I’m not going to post fifty kitten pictures. I can’t imagine even the most dedicated kitten fan wanting that. We do, however, have about eleventy billion photos of all three kittens… so if you add all the kittens in these photos up, they add up to fifty kittens. If you want more — donate to the Secular Student Alliance now!

I would just like to point out that in that last one, they are playing with a crocheted Flying Spaghetti Monster.
