Why are atheists angry?
Is it because they’re selfish, joyless, lacking in meaning, and alienated from God?
Or is it because they have legitimate reasons to be angry — and are ready to do something about it?
Armed with passionate outrage, absurdist humor, and calm intelligence, popular blogger Greta Christina makes a powerful case for outspoken atheist activism, and explains the empathy and justice that drive it.
This accessible, personal, down-to-earth book speaks not only to atheists, but to believers who want to understand the so-called “new atheism.” “Why Are You Atheists So Angry?” drops a bombshell on the destructive force of religious faith — and gives a voice to millions of angry atheists.
“Greta Christina’s analysis of religion is acute and witty, and at the same time fair and compassionate. And I’m jealous: I sure wish I could write as well as she does.”
-Alan Sokal, Professor of Physics, New York University
“Greta has done something truly impressive with this book: She explains in a calm, reasonable, and thoughtful way exactly why she’s a pissed-off, angry atheist. She’s not alone, though, and it’s not only other atheists who will agree with her. In fact, I *dare* religious people to read this book and not come away furious at the often awful impact faith has had on the world, even if they don’t believe they’re responsible for it. I may be a “friendly atheist” online, but Greta definitely speaks for me in this book.”
-Hemant Mehta, Friendly Atheist, author of I Sold My Soul on eBay
“If only more people could channel their anger into something so inspiring! Greta Christina has written the perfect book for anyone who wonders about the true impact of religious dogma on women’s health, gay rights, science education, and the daily lives of those who have no faith. Her concluding chapter, which contains solid advice for how to make a positive change in the world, will ensure that you’ll have an outlet for all that rage you’ll build up by the end of the book. Trust me – you’ll need it.”
-Rebecca Watson, Skepchick.org
“I found this book informative and enraging! Leave it to Greta to inform and elucidate like no other. I highly recommend this book to everyone, everywhere. And I hope never to get Greta angry at me. :)”
-David Silverman, President, American Atheists
“Greta Christina’s book offers a passionately lucid explanation of the reasons for atheist anger and its connection to the energy behind all movements for social justice. It is both informative and inspiring.”
-Ophelia Benson, Butterflies and Wheels
“They say if you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention. Well, Greta Christina is definitely paying attention — and in this book, she delivers a clean, bracing blast of atheist anger, like a refreshing cool breeze in a stifling hothouse of faith, that offers compelling reasons why all rational people of conscience should oppose religion and the harm it does.”
-Adam Lee, Daylight Atheism
“Greta Christina is one of the best writers on religion out there, period. I’ve been waiting for this book for a long time.”
-Chris Hallquist, The Uncredible Hallq
“This just became my number-one book to recommend to all believers and new atheists alike. I thought the field of atheist literature was all just rehashing the same stuff by now. But this is an original, visceral, and ultimately complete defense of not just atheist outrage, but atheism itself. Greta sticks to the undeniable facts-on-the-ground and articulates it all correctly and well, heading off every possible rebuttal with brilliant economy. She never gets bogged down in abstract philosophy, yet still hits every key abstract point, leaving you by the end with no rational reason not to agree, and finally kick to the curb that useless old religion, or get off your bum and really do something for the cause.”
-Dr. Richard Carrier, author of Sense and Goodness without God

If you read the book and like it — please spread the word! Tell your friends, Tweet it, Facebook it, write nice reviews on Amazon about it, make upo excuses to mention it at cocktail parties.
And thanks so much to all of you for your patience and support. I know my blogging hasn’t been as regular in the past few weeks, and y’all have been very patient about that. I’ll probably still be crazed until after the Reason Rally and the American Atheists convention, and a fair amount of my blogging focus for the next few weeks will probably be very book-focused. But I should be able to return to something resembling normal in something resembling soon. I hope you think it was worth it! Enjoy!
Thanks, Greta. Whispernet’d as soon as I login.
Yay! I’ll start reading it right away.
Bought. Also, Teen DaughterSpawn was just hammering nails to hang up some pictures in her room when the framed Skepticon photo of you fell on her head. Is that due to atheist anger?
Bought. Can’t wait to dig into it. 🙂
Thanks. Reading now!
I like my books made of trees, so I will wait for that. Congrats on getting it out though!
Bought it!
Now can we tone down the kitten stuff?
^^^Haha. I seriously love your sarcasm wagner
Very nice blurbs indeed!
Tried to buy but amazon says “not currently available”. 🙁
OK…just bought it and am eager for a little bedtime reading. I’ll post a short review on Amazon when I finish.
Anybody know if there’s gonna be an audiobook version?
Confirmed. Not available in Latin America and Caribbean.
Now there are 100 reasons for atheists been angry!
eneraldocarneiro @ #13: I’m looking into it. I thought I set the settings to make it available everywhere. It’ll definitely be available in other formats soon, if for some reason I can’t make this better — but hang tight, I’ll see what I can do.
YAY! Downloading……
.
If it says NOT AVAILABLE, change your country settings to United States. That’s what I do here in Canada. And I will most certainly be mentioning your book at the Northwest Free-thought Alliance Conference next weekend, right after I mention mine.
I bought my copy. Most of the way through Chapter One, and I’m beginning to notice a distinct lack of peanut butter in my immediate surroundings. God, if you’re there, could you make me a PB&J? Kthx.
How soon will it be in ePub format? Us iPad users want to inow.
You can get a kindle app for ipad, you know. Or use Calibre to convert to epub.
Alethea,
I have Calibre, but I tried the kindle app and didn’t like it. I think I’ll wait, so I know there won’t be conversion issues (at least I won’t be the one to have to deal with conversion issues. 8-). ). But I’ll definitely get it.
Thanks for the advice. Appreciate it.
Fareeking awesome. I can’t tell you how much I have been waiting for this. I will review after reading, But I’m sure it will not disappoint. As I’ve heard enough Greta to be super excited.
I am buying it now…
I am searching for it…
I am tapping on the book link…
I am tapping on the price…
I have purchased it…
It has been downloaded.
Yay!
I have a nook when will that be available? Hurry I need to read soon!
[…] Christina’s new book is out. Woot! Share this:ShareEmailPrintFacebookPress ThisDiggStumbleUponReddit Posted in Atheism […]
I want to get the physical book when it comes out. I was just wondering, since the List of Rage chapter seems to have a lot of links, how will the physical version look? Will there be footnotes or something?
Bought and downloaded in the UK. Looking forward to reading it.
Bought it.
Now you have $$ to buy the kittehs treats!
Smashmouth? Did you mean Smashwords? If so, I’ll wait for that. I’d much rather give them the business than Amazon (unless you are fixated on your Amazon ranking and would rather everyone bought from there).
I don’t have a Kindle, but I will get a copy as soon as one I can access is out. I am anticipating this!
[…] can read Greta’s blog about her new book, and you can order it for Kindle from Amazon. Why Are You Atheists So Angry should also be up for […]
Purchased and downloaded!! Will you sign my Kindle at ReasonRally? 😉
[…] And Greta herself! […]
Okay, so I am like old school and don’t have a kindle. So when is this coming out in old school book version? I would really like to get a copy.

I bought it!!
I love reading your writing.
As soon as I get home to my Kindle and turn it on whispernet will bring it to me 🙂
[…] you know that Greta Christina has a book, Why Are You Atheists So Angry?, available on the Kindle store? You should read it, […]
SRSLY. You decide to write a book and a few weeks later it’s published? It’s offocial – I am much too lazy to accomplish anything significant in life.
Congrats, and I can’t wait to buy my paper copy!
Purchased! Glad to have another way to support the cause! Keep it going, Greta!
I’ll be more that willing to translate your book in italian. If you ever plan to have it published in Italy, please contact me.
Amazing – congratulations! I just bought my copy and will read it ASAP. I’m amazed at the speed with which you went from concept to publication – kudos!
Do you know if this version has DRM enabled or not? If it’s turned off, I’ll get happily buy it now and convert to a format that a little more usable for me. Otherwise I’m happy to wait for the Smashwords or Nook versions.
Also, I love the name of your publisher. Is Dirty Heathen Publishing something you just created?
Sadly, I do not like Amazon, so will have to wait for another format 🙁
Woohoo!
Bought it. Probably the first proper book I’ve actually bought for my Kindle in over a year of having it.
Looking forward to reading 🙂
[…] She has (finally) released her first book on the subject. […]
Reading your book right now. One question: why do you (and others) continue to spell “god” with an initial capital G particularly since a key goal is to remove the “specialness” associated with the concept?
I’m halfway there. PZ Myers provided a link to the Kindle App for PC and since then I’ve downloaded the sample, so I know everything is working OK. Tomorrow I shall buy the book from Amazon. [I hope you make a fortune].
Any word on whether or not it will be available as a hardcover? I imagine just a paperback is more likely.
Please include KOBO – I think there might be some cross publishing between them and smashwords.
Can’t wait to read it.
Yeowch! $7.99 is steep, but I bought it anyway. Can’t WAIT to read it 😀
Well, $7.99 is steep, because I’m cheap (hey, that rhymes, too :P). Am finding out that owning a pet is EXPENSIVE, especially when he goes through chew toys like candy *sigh*
OK, this was what finally pushed me over the edge to download Kindle for my Android. It. Better. Be. Worth. It.
(gives Clint Eastwood squint)
All your book are belong to us. You have no chance to survive make your time. For great justice.
I would love to buy this book, but DRM makes it a no-go for me. Sorry.
Congrats! I’ll be waiting for the dead tree version because I’m backwards like that.
Kobo for those of us who won’t buy from Amazon would be awesome.
BOUGHT IT!
Thanks Greta.
Love you!
🙂
Yay!
I think I’ll wait to get a dead-tree copy, though, just because I want Greta’s name on my bookshelf.
Ahhh, the joy of one click purchasing!
@Lou Doench, #58:
The terror of one click purchasing, you mean. The barrier between “want” and “buy” is too low for someone with my impulse control.
BRB buying moar boox.
I downloaded it, and found I’m in it! Sort of. As a resource at the end. So cool, thanks Greta.
In case those who mentioned that they didn’t like the iPad Kindle app, Amazon revised the app recently, the other day, in fact, and I find it’s not bad. A lot similar to iBooks, in many ways.
By my count you pulled in $207.74 just from this page alone.
Less Amazon fees, of course…..
I just posted a review. I wanted to say
RAH RAH SISS BOOM BAH! but I decided to make mroe than sound effects. This is a great book, and it’s been the cumulation of decades of thought and writing on your part. I am so proud of you, so admiring.
Note to those uninitiated to Kindle titles: you can read them on anything. Your phone, your computer, your iPad, etc. Kindle makes “apps” for anything that moves.
PS
As a 12 year-vet ebook author, I can tell you, I always make my book available on multiple formats: the Nook, PDF, all the little ereaders, Apple, non DRM, all of it. It philosophically suits my agenda, and I’m sure it does for Greta too, and all the other authors who go nuts to provide all these different formats. We all wish for the virtual “vinyl LP” that you could just enjoy to on any record player.
Yet for all the “hue and cry” you hear about the need and desire for these diverse formats, only 2% of the audience I see actually goes out and takes advantage of the alternatives.
I would in fact, predict, that the people who are the quickest to protest lack of variety are the least likely pursue their stated objective. It reminds me of porn and how everyone SAID they wanted one sort of thing, when in fact they purchased quite the opposite. Maybe Greta can write a book about THAT someday!
PZ Myers introduced me to the Kindle app available on the iPad, so I bought your book. You go “girl”!
…and I look forward to the hardback edition, if it ever becomes available.
Greta, it is also out for the Nook! I just purchased it and have downloaded it to my iPad. I know what i’ll be doing after work today!
Thanks for this post! Just bought for my Nook & it appeared immediately in my library. Formatting & typesetting look flawless.
Guess what I bought…
Depends whether it’s being used as a proper name for e.g. the Abrahamic deity, or as a general species descriptor. So, “God appeared as a burning bush – the eco-vandal!” but “I could worship one god a day for the rest of my life and still not run out”.
Just bought a copy and I think it looks fantastic on my Kindle: http://imgur.com/lAgwU 🙂
Reading now. And just so you understand what you have done here: my heart may not survive this book.
Re especially:
Very much so.
I am not full of hate.
I am full of grief.
Anger tends to go with that, too.

An impressive share, I simply given this onto a colleague who was doing a bit evaluation on this. And he in actual fact purchased me breakfast because I discovered it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I really feel strongly about it and love studying more on this topic. If attainable, as you become experience, would you mind updating your blog with extra details? It is extremely useful for me. Large thumb up for this weblog post!
