Atheist Meme of the Day: Atheists Aren't Angry at God

Scarlet letter
Today’s Atheist Meme of the Day, from my Facebook page. Pass this on; or don’t; or edit it as you see fit; or make up your own. Enjoy!

Atheists are not angry at God. Many atheists are angry about religion and the effect it often has on people — but we’re not angry at God, any more than we’re angry at Zeus, Santa Claus, unicorns, or any other supernatural beings we don’t believe in. Pass it on: if we say it enough times to enough people, it may get across.

Another aspect always bugs me about this particular canard. If religion has given cause to be angry at, isn’t that not an endorsement of religion?
No, I’m not angry at the gods, but I am quite angry about my Catholic schooling, which very nearly succeeded in training me as a homophobe. (I got better.)
If your belief system is causing the people subjected to it moral outrage, that’s not an argument for it.

My counter-argument, when faced with “you’re just angry at God”, is: anarchists.
There are all kinds of anarchists, from thoughtful political scientists to people who just want to blow things up, just as there are all kinds of atheists from philosophers to rebellious teenagers. And what all these anarchists have in common is that they don’t like the government and think it’s a bad idea and don’t want to have to follow its rules (massive oversimplification, I know, but it’s close enough to right to be getting on with). However, a person who goes around claiming that the government does not exist is not an anarchist, they’re deluded. Anarchists clearly do bear a grudge against the government, but they don’t respond by acting like it’s not there, like atheists do with God.

My point was that people who are mad at or have disagreements with an entity don’t declare the entity doesn’t exist; they say “we have issues with this entity” or “this entity sucks”.

I think I kind of know what you mean, but it’s still rather unclear… *scratches head*

I mean this seems to say that Atheist acts like god is not there, but that god of course is there, we are just deluded – Just like Anarchists would be, if they claimed the government wasn’t there… ???

It is a common theist trap, to try to get an atheist to temporary affirm the the existence of a god just so that they can deny that they don’t hate it. An atheist falling victim would reply something to the effect of, “I don’t hate god!” (as though one existed to hate.) Theists sometimes also do this in an attempt to misdirect away from an argument.
