Atheist Meme of the Day: Atheists Believe In Things

Scarlet letter
Today’s Atheist Meme of the Day, from my Facebook page. Pass this on; or don’t; or edit it as you see fit; or make up your own. Enjoy!

“People who believe in nothing will believe in anything” is a terrible argument against atheism. Atheists believe in things: kindness, fairness, honesty, truth, love, etc. We just don’t believe in supernatural entities that affect the physical world. And we don’t need that particular belief to be good people with strong ethics. Pass it on: if we say it enough times to enough people, it may get across.

I doubt that it was ever intended to be an “argument” against atheism — just an insulting soundbite against it. In terms of any kind of actual meaning, this catchphrase is completely contradictory; so as an argument, it just immediately self-implodes. However, the self-righteous nitwits who employ it would never realize or admit that.

I believe in the power of expectations. I believe that there’s no substitute for simply being a good person. Also, I believe that women’s sweaters should have big, fabulous bell sleeves even if they get in the way.
What? Beliefs don’t always have to be serious!

It isn’t that atheists believe in nothing. It is that atheists lack a belief in gods. Honestly when theists do come up with the gem that we believe in nothing you just know that you can’t appeal to their reason. They are simply making excuses as to why they don’t like the idea of unbelievers. It is my queue to ridicule them and their silly assumptions.

I just found out that a few years ago a catholic cardinal in my country said that people are only worried about climate change because they’re atheists or pagan, compared emmissions reduction to human sacrifice, and said that Christians don’t believe in climate change because a benign god wouldn’t let things get that bad so it must all be nonsense.

We give oursleves too much credit as a species. We’re just biological organisms responsing to our surroundings, like every other species. Altruism as well as self interest are evolutionary necessities. The notion of ethics or morality is a human contrivence. All is explained Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene.

Sounds like that guy has the Problem of Evil all figured out. I’d love to hear his solution.
