“A magnetism that will not let go”: The Drooling Homophobe Series, Part 764

Do these people listen to what they say?

Don’t they know how obvious this “lady doth protest too much” thing is starting to get?

Pass_the_salt
Pandagon has the story of right-wing Christian extremist Dave Daubenmire of Pass the Salt Ministries, who, with his flock, has been on a crusade to disrupt the church services of gay-friendly churches. But that’s not even the best part of the story. As is so often the case, the best part of the story is in an almost offhand remark.

In a Bible-spewing homophobic rant earlier this year about a visit to the Gay Pride Parade, Daubenmire had this to say:

“The ‘meat’ on display will forever change the way you view homosexuality. Sin has no boundaries, no clutch, and no emergency brake. Once you dip your toe into the pool of sin, especially sexual sin, there is a magnetism that will not let go.” (emphasis mine)

Ummmm…

Let me put it this way. The straight guys I know who visit the Gay Pride Parade do not describe the event as having “a magnetism that will not let go.” Their reaction is more along the lines of, “Nice dress, dude.” They describe it as interesting, entertaining, touching, hilarious, kind of tedious when the “polo-shirted employees of boring corporations” contingents go by, etc. But they do not describe it as a pool of sin with a magnetism that will not let go. The straight guys I know are not forever changed by the sight of gay male “meat on display,” and they are quite capable of resisting the magnetism of homosexuality. They find the magnetic pull of homosexuality pretty gosh-darned unmagnetic. That’s kind of what makes them, you know — straight.

So I just have to ask: Do Dave Daubenmire, and Ted Haggard, and all the rest of the right-wing Christian leering brigade, really not know what they sound like? Do they really not see that frothing at the mouth closely resembles drooling?

Funny how this story sort of dovetails with Dan Savage’s column this week, featuring straight boys who worry that their failure to get laid might mean they are gay. Seems like someone ought to be able to condense the two into a useful guide to determining whether or not you are a big ol’ homo.

i was surprised how many people who identify as straight (at least verbally) went to the parade this year! it was my first time and most of the people i went with were straight.. quite an interesting experience.

Typical of these homophobes, Dave Daubenmire is busy focusing on homosexuality to draw attention away from the problems within his own family. Take note:
NEWARK, Ohio -February 2007 – The 24-year-old son of conservative religious activist David Daubenmire will spend the next five years on probation after a Licking County judge convicted him on a child-pornography charge.
At a hearing this morning, Zachary Daubenmire pleaded no contest to a felony charge of pandering obscenity involving a minor. Common Pleas Court Judge Thomas Marcelain convicted him on the charge and immediately sentenced him.
Daubenmire, whose father has fought pornography as the founder of Pass the Salt Ministries and Minutemen United, also was fined $1,000 and must spend two years in prison if he violates terms of his probation.

Ingrid: No. I know someone from “Licking, Missouri”.
The magnetic attraction of gays is legendary. After going to the pride parade (great party!), I visited some gay friends for dinner. And we discussed the _theatre_.
Can’t you just feel the corruption sinking its insidious claws in? I mean, we weren’t discussing _musicals_ at the time, but that was obviously the next step in the progression.
I should obviously try to replenish my withered testosterone supplies with a stiff dose of football, beer, and NASCAR.

Fucking fundies vote with their stomachs. They can’t handle gay marriage because “ew, gross, man sex,” and they can’t handle being pro-choice because, oh noes, “blood ‘n’ such.” The argument never goes deeper than “ew, gross” that’s all they have to persuade.

I think the men who worry so much about others drowning in pools of sin are the ones who actually are gay and rather than come to grips with the fact, they enter a cycle. They think they’re being deviant whenever they think about another man, feel guilty, and act out against the gay community as a way of punishing themselves. Then they feel another urge, rinse and repeat…
I really wish they’d just get over themselves and quit punishing the rest of us with their attempts at self-flagellation.
