Learning from Lockwood

Pacific Northwest geobloggers and other folk interested in geology have a tremendous resource in Lockwood. He gives his knowledge freely, he’s always up for an adventure, and he knows all the awesome spots in Oregon. One of the best days of my life was the day he became my friend.

I talk about him a lot. You’ve seen his picture, you’ve gotten a taste of what it’s like to go field tripping with him, but images and text can only convey so much. So I recorded a snippet on our last outing, whilst we were up on Marys Peak. This will give you a sense of the firehose of geological information you’ll be drinking from if you ever get out in the field with him.

I plan to do a lot more of these next trip. Not only because I think some people will find them informative and fun, but because I want to capture these moments forever. Also, so I can go back and study later! When I’m with him, I wish I had a better memory.

I love every minute of it. I think this video is a good example of why, but it’s only the smallest part. If you ever get the chance to go out and explore with Lockwood, don’t hesitate. Do it.

    I would so do it.
Next time, could you please also show more of his face? I do love the beard, but even more, I like watching people’s faces when they’re talking about things they are passionate about and know very well. It’s usually pretty awe-inspiring. Then again, juggling between Lockwood’s face and the rock he’s talking about… Probably it’s own kind of challenge. :)

I have spent many an afternoon and evening in conversations with Lockwood about astronomy, politics, and teaching and learning. Lockwood has always been the informed and thoughtful person that I want to grow up to be. Here in New York, I am thousands of miles away from a source that I always found entertainng and entrancing. Enjoy every minute with hima dn know I am jealous

Oh, Dana you don’t know what a joy it is to hear and see him again like that. Its been 32 years since I’ve last heard his voice, and I’ve missed it -a lot. I used to love listening to him talk about something he was interested in – he would always get so involvrd with the subject, you couldn’t help but get interested in it too. I could listen to him for hours & hours and did. When I knew him, he hadn’t taken any geology courses so his interest were in different areas. Now I can’t wait to hear what he has to say about the geology of the pacific northwest territory, so please do post more of these videos. I miss my friend and wish I could go on these trips with you. Since I can’t be there these videos are the next best thing. Thank you for sharing this little bit.
