Report Reveals LGBT People of Color Are Most Disadvantaged Workers

Word to straight white cis delusional postracialists:

From the Feminist News:

LGBT people of color are the most disadvantaged workers in the US, according to a new report released last week by the Movement Advancement Project, Center for American Progress, Freedom to Work, Human Rights Campaign, and the National Black Justice Coalition.

The report, entitled A Broken Bargain for LGBT Workers of Color, details how LGBT people of color, who live at the intersections of various marginalized identities in the US, face unique barriers to employment and education. Inequality, lack of workplace protections, and violence and discrimination in schools all contribute to high rates of poverty and unemployment for many LGBT workers of color.

“Contrary to popular stereotypes, LGBT workers are more racially diverse than the general population, making it critical to address the unique obstacles they face,” said Sharon Lettman-Hicks, executive director and CEO of the National Black Justice Coalition. “Bias and prejudice based on race, sexual orientation, and gender identity/expression intersect to the detriment of LGBT workers of color.”

According to the report, LGBT youth of color often face multiple forms of harassment at school, have fewer support systems, and are at greater risk of entering the school-to-prison pipeline [see PDF]. At work, LGBT people of color experience higher rates of discrimination and are less likely to have adequate mentors. Discriminatory immigration and tax laws as well as unequal job benefits, including lack of appropriate forms of family leave, also disadvantage LGBT workers of color… More @http://www.americanprogress.org/press/release/2013/11/14/79395/release-lgbt-workers-of-color-are-among-the-most-disadvantaged-in-the-american-workforce/

source document. when you go through it you will find cute bar graphs that show that this report is hanging the LGB off the T – that the press release actually says “LGBT workers of colour are *among* the most disadvantaged workers in America.” What it actually should say is “are the most disadvantaged, but Trans workers of colour especially so.”

but you’ve got to dig and look at the report to see that, because it tries to hide that. there are personal stories from people in the report. only one of them is from a trans person, described as Gender Non-Conforming, pronouns used are he/his. the story is of him being severely harassed and expelled from school. the rest are

3 cis Gay men, all Latino. one of the personal stories is from a different site, nothing is said about the original writer giving permission to use it. it’s a story of a man who grew us severely harassed at school. the story is 10 years old.* The other two are from the Poet Laureate for President Barack Obama’s inauguration, and one undocumented student.
3 cis lesbian woman, two Latina, one Black. fired from their office clothes wearing jobs, except one Latina who navigated coming out with safety and support.
1 cis bisexual woman, who is black. harassed at her office clothes wearing jobs, fired from another office clothes wearing job, had to stay invisibly queer to keep working without discrimination or harassment.
1 cis straight ally woman, who is Latino. started a gay straight alliance at her school.

Note the distinct total absence of those who are trans women of colour? I sure did. Note the distinct total absence of stories from people with low status, exploitative, shitty jobs? I sure did. Note the erasure of lgbT people of colour who got tossed straight onto the street? yup.

It’s a very shiny, polished report, with the edges blunted for palatibility by the comfortable, and the poor street folk erased from the page.
