Recurring Dreams

I put absolutely no stock in interpreting dreams to mean something.  Except I can’t help but try to interpret them anyway.  It’s like Christopher Hitchen’s — he doesn’t believe in horoscopes but he can’t help but feel a jolt of excitement when he reads one that says he’ll meet a girl.

I have a recurring dream that I am trying to find a parking spot in a heavily wooded area beside a dock.  I’m picking someone up, maybe from school.  Normally I’m driving a black volvo and can’t find a legal space.  Or simply can’t park in the spaces I find due to some apparent lack of driving skill in the dream.  Not that I’m the best parallel parker anyway, but I hold my own in the waking world.

Last night I was driving an 18 wheeler that I was trying to park and I kept thinking I had parked it and then I was essentially blocking the road and had to decide whether to just leave it and risk a ticket or not.

Dreaming about parking.  Only in LA right?

To see a truck in your dream, suggests that you are overworked. You are taking on too many tasks and are weighed down by all the responsibilities. To dream that you cannot find a parking space, indicates your inability to find your place in life. You may still be on your quest to find your talent or niche where you belong. Alternatively, it may reflect your busy life and the lack of time you have.http://www.dreammoods.com/

Jack Finlay: Obituary, note from the Film School, and his sister

From the FSU Mailing list:

Am so sorry to have to share with you news about the death of Jack Finlay, who has acted in many, many student films, always ready to help out as an extra or in a major role. His contributions to our films and his happy smile will be missed.

Following is an email I received from his sister, Leslie, with a bit of information beyond the obituary which was run in the Tallahassee Democrat. As you will note in the obituary (url listed below), his family has recommended that memorial donations be made to the Film School. Addresses are also listed if you want to contact his family by mail or email, and there is a guest book on the obituary site.

Subject: Death of Jack Finlay

Hi Meryl,
Scott Holstein has suggested that I send to you a copy of Jack’s obituary in case you think it appropriate to include something about his sudden death last Sunday Sep 20th in the film school newsletter.

The medical examiner has declared that Jack died of hypertensive cardiovascular disease. Apparently he had a heart attack, stroke or aneurysm. He had brought his good friend and our cousin, George Wurster, to the film school to audition when he was stricken. Campus police used the resuscitator paddles on him and brought him back. The emts and ambulance took him to the hospital, but Jack didn’t make it. He died at 4:13pm.

Here is the link to the obit in today’s Tallahassee Democrat.

The funeral is Saturday, Oct 3, 2009 at 11am, at Culleys Meadowwood Funeral Home on Riggins Road in Tallahassee.

Thank you!

Leslie Ruth Finlay

Jack Finlay: Obituary, note from the Film School, and his sister

RIP Jack Finlay; I am a horrible person

Jack Finlay, a talented actor local to Tallahassee and a big supporter of the FSU Film School passed away yesterday.  More specifically, he collapsed during the Film School’s auditions and was pronounced DOA when he got to the hospital.  That’s all the information I can find.

My first thought was oh God how horrible.  I know that he’s struggled with health issues, but I think he only just turned fifty.  This is his “About Me” on Facebook:

Been through a lot; maybe more than my share. Got through all the “old man” diseases before I turned 50. I plan to live forever … so far, so good….

My second thought was thank God I wasn’t running auditions this year because I would have freaked out.  I am a horrible person.  Can you imagine that happening while you were running casting?  What if you thought it was part of the scene?  *shudder*  If it was in fact in the middle of the audition, it’s definitely on tape somewhere.  Horrifying.

Rest in Peace

Because When People Steal it Pisses Me Off

I’m re-posting this here because I think it deserves a wide circulation.  I’m really anti-stealing, but to steal a piece of art that someone has spent hours and hours creating is maybe the worst thing you can do.

Artist brute_force; had the following steampunk monocle stolen from him at Dragon*Con. It’s a one of a kind piece, so if you see it, that’s the one. There’s not another one like it.

He is offering a $200 reward for its safe return, no questions asked. He’s offering a $500 reward if it leads to the arrest of the person who stole it.

And, the kicker: if you get the thief arrested, he will make you one of these pieces. Value: a cool $1500.

Please crosspost and repost this, especially if you know lots of SCA, renfaire, gamer, anime, goth, costuming, and steampunk fans. Someone suggested covering furry and filk, too. Not a bad idea. Art theft like this really, really pisses me off. If the bastard won’t send it back, he should at least be afraid to wear it in public.

Excuse my sentimentality

When I was young, my mother was really in to needlepoint, but she wasn’t very good.  Or rather, she wasn’t professional, she took on projects that were of her size.  But, I was obsessed with this needlepoint design that was, in her opinion, well out of her strength.  It was almost but not entirely unlike this:

CaringWings_MED

It took her two years.  Two years working on this little 12″ x 12″ piece of fabric.  And in the end, I had a little pink angel pillow that I loved third best, after Bear Blankie and Big Bear, of course.

For her birthday (Aug 31) I decided, back in the late winter/early spring, to make her a pillow too.  Now, I have no interest in needlepoint or cross stitch but my boyfriend-at-the-time’s mother was really into quilting.  I have an interest in sewing, so I thought, I’ll do like a little quilt-like pillow.  That shouldn’t take to long.  It’ll be done in time for 4th of July and I’ll give it to her when I go home then.

Ha!

Tonight, I have completed the epic quest of sewing.  All by hand, an imperfect little 18″x18″ pillow.  Inside of which is another pillow, or the remains of it, the last thing I bought in Tallahassee before driving to LA, a hideous orange Florida pillow for my little brother to sleep on while I drove.
