Today in embarrassing moments for Mitt Romney

I admit I’ve had a few good laughs at poor Mitt Romney’s expense these last few weeks — killing Big Bird, binders of women, bayonets and battleships, but today came something that must sting coming from the Mormonest place on earth.

JT pointed me the direction of the Salt Lake Tribune which just endorsed… Barack Obama.  Now, to be fair, the paper endorsed Obama four years ago and was formed as the Mormon Tribune in order to criticize the LDS church.  That said, Mitt Romney helped organize the 2002 Olympics and is a Mormon. He should have gotten at least a nod or a thank you in such ostensibly friendly territory.

That is not what happened.

If this portrait of a Romney willing to say anything to get elected seems harsh, we need only revisit his branding of 47 percent of Americans as freeloaders who pay no taxes, yet feel victimized and entitled to government assistance. His job, he told a group of wealthy donors, “is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

Where, we ask, is the pragmatic, inclusive Romney, the Massachusetts governor who left the state with a model health care plan in place, the Romney who led Utah to Olympic glory? That Romney skedaddled and is nowhere to be found.

Perhaps Jon Huntsman will have the opportunity to run more successfully in 4 years time.  He is a man that Utah and Mormons and even the Salt Lake Tribune can be proud of, even if he is a Republican.

I don’t know much about Huntsman, but the little I do know about him I mostly like.

I was sad to see him lose out.

Oddly enough, I’ve encountered Democrats who were glad he got knocked out of the primaries (or whatever they are—I’m Canadian, so American politic processes make little sense to me: when does the Queen come in to knight the next Premiere Magistrate du Nord, for instance?), because Huntsman might have been difficult to beat.

Voltaire’s Prayer is a dangerous gamble for Americans.

Perhaps they are Democrats who are more concerned with toeing the party line or believe Democrats can do no wrong, etc. I myself considered changing my party registration* just to vote for Huntsman in the primaries because I wanted Obama to have a challenge, hoping it would force him to pander more for my vote, instead of targeting the know-nothing “undecided” voters.

      * Registered Democrats cannot vote for Republicans in the primaries in my state — and please note (just to make things more confusing) that not every state has this rule.

Well, at least in one case they were a politically savvy individual who felt that the best opponent Obama could have would be a wingnut like Santorum.

Clearly, having an increasingly unhinged GOP is not any kind of long term strategy. Eventually, the Democrats will lose, and then what? We’re all fucked.

As an Ex-Mormon, Democrat, Atheist Utahan (Oxymoron if you ever heard one). Huntsman is perhaps the most moderate Republican in this State and Country where only the extremists have a chance at glory. In fact, I know some people who has mistaken him for a Blue Dog Democrat. He was well liked by almost all of Utah both Democrat and Republican (He left with about a 90% approval rating). He did embrace both sides of the political spectrum and he is perhaps the only Republican that actually believes in both evolution and global warming. He is also perhaps the only Republican who doesn’t want to destroy China, Iran, and half the world. But enough of me sucking up to Huntsman.

Honestly, the Tribune supporting Obama is surprising even if it is a more “liberal” newspaper than its competitor the Deseret News (A Mormon owned paper). The Tribune has no problem supporting more conservative candidates like Orin Hatch or Governor Gary Herbert. If you want a real liberal paper, read the City Weekly.
