I share a lot of links on Twitter and Facebook that I don’t blog about because I don’t have much to add. The reading list is a periodic feature where I share those links with my blog audience too. Of course, you’re still welcome to follow me on Twitter.
Around FtB
- Online Bullying and Trauma: What’s At Stake?–“All the same, would I have written it differently if I’d expected them to read it? Absolutely.”
- PTSD and Me(lody)–“People are cruel. I often use the example of people throwing fireworks or popping balloons to trigger PTSD as an example of dickery because it was how children behaved towards me.”
- Atheist Highway Cleanups, and Some Further Thoughts On “Mission Drift”–“But that actually leads me back to my original question: What do clean highways and blood banks have to do with atheism?”
The Wider Web
- No, the Hugo nominations were not rigged.–“You may see this as a cynical, contemptuous of the awards and the people who vote for them, and just a real dick move. But even if it were, eh.”
- Your Words are Not Victimless: Rape Culture and David Choe’s “Bad Storytelling”–“I think one of the things that bothers me most deeply about this incident is that as a researcher, I think it is vitally important to hear perpetrator narratives.”
- A Few Thoughts On The “Online Harassment Can’t Cause PTSD” Crowd–“One could be forgiven for thinking that some of you would respond to the idea that two plus two equals four and one plus three also equals four by screaming “BUT HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT ONE, TWO, AND THREE ARE ALL THE EXACT SAME NUMBER?!”.”
- Skepticon 7 Date Announcement!–“We’re moving this year to a super secret NEW location!”
- Female Journalist Gets Rape Threats Over Comic Book Criticism–“You’ve seen this scenario before, and you’ll see it again (until more of us do something).”
- It’s Complicated.–“When she cracked a vase over his head during an argument, when he joined the army and kept volunteering for tours, when she kissed him goodbye at the door, the rape was there – it flavored every drink she ever poured him.”
- The 2014 Hugo Award Nominations, The Good and the Complicated–“The ballot seems perfectly indicative to me of this moment in time, this moment in culture.”
- On Writing the Good Fight: Hugo Roundup–“Many folks on the ballot are folks who’ve learned how to move the internet – myself among them – and I find it disingenuous to say that it’s OK for me to move the internet but not OK for others.”
- The Importance of Pre-orders–“What most people don’t know, and what I certainly didn’t know before getting into the industry, is that even with all other things being equal some sales are more important than others.”
- That Game of Thrones Scene Wasn’t a ‘Turn-On,’ It Was Rape–“It’s one thing to present horrific acts in fictional media; it’s another to present a horrific act and deny that it is horrific, particularly when it happens to be disturbingly commonplace in real life and frequently denied its significance and legitimacy in that precise way.”
- A Type of Public Harassment We Need to Talk About More–“For men whose identity development isn’t as far along — they’re either not out to themselves, or not out to others — this form of harassment can be particularly harmful.”
- We, the Extorted–“But fundamentally we need to ask the question: does anyone think that 1912 was the high-water mark for American society and the welfare and happiness of its citizens, one that we should strive to recreate?”
- A Necessary Conversation Between the G and the T–“Excuse me, Gay Community? It’s us, the Trans Community. Have you got a few minutes? We really need to talk.”
- How NOT To Build Our Community–“I sat down and contemplated how selfish a person must be to have thousands, literally thousands, of secular groups available that focus on them and to object in such a manner to the one group they could find that doesn’t specifically focus on them.”
- How Melody Hensley is putting the bullies to shame–“Happily, that’s not the whole story. What really seems to infuriate Hensley’s enemies is that she’s not acting like they think a victim should.”
- Jersey City Man Shot in the Face and Blinded by Police Faces 30 Years in Prison–“Even more damning is that McVicar did not immediately report the shooting. Instead, he reported that shots were fired in a different location, where there had been no shooting.”
- Help Secular Woman Sponsor a Keynote Speaker at the Foundation Beyond Belief Conference–“Caroline Fiennes is executive director of Giving Evidence, a UK-based company that consults on evidence-based giving, past CEO of climate change charity Global Cool, and author of It Ain’t What You Give, It’s the Way That You Give It.”
- A thought on playing at the lowest possible difficulty level, and telling other people what’s easy–“Yeah, that’s when we point out, Mr. Scalzi, that by your own logic you are fucking up.” [As a side note, I saw this post because John Scalzi tweeted it.]
- Victim of NYPD Rapist Comes Forward to Change New York’s Rape Laws–“On Tuesday, Cuomo (who isn’t related to the governor) is going to Albany to push other lawmakers to support the broader definition, which is already the law in eight other states.”
- Speculative Fiction 2014: Announcement and Call for Submissions!–“Speculative Fiction: The Best Online Reviews, Essays and Commentary is an anthology that celebrates online science fiction and fantasy non-fiction and its influence on the community.”
- Drawing Eyebrows on Babies Will Not Disappoint You–“FINALLY, a reason to have children.”
- Research Recruitment Request: Asexual Activism–“My ethics approval has gone through. Actually I’m pretty chuffed as the ethics committee passed me first time without a single amendment.”
- Dear SFWA, the Second–“I’ve written to you before — I am sure you will remember, because it’s been an interesting and active eleven months. And surprisingly, I don’t mean that in a snarky way.”
My love of the “Drawing Eyebrows on Babies” post is part of the reason my sister is hesitant to let me babysit.
I think the super-villain cackling put her off the idea.
But…but if you draw them on with eyeliner, they wash right off afterward! 😉
I really liked the Scalzi link within a link about lowest difficulty setting, although I get Narayan’s point.
Stephanie, I have been meaning to thank you for some time now for your consistently awesome reading lists. I love that you include FtB and the wider web. I can never get through all of your links, but I try every time.
