This was, of course, no exception. With a hashtag that has the Skepchick name in it? Of course it’s no exception. So here, for the sake of documentation, are the folks who decided that getting their message out–whatever that might be–is more important than people being able to follow panel tweets on science and skepticism. Also, snark from me, because this stuff is tedious.
I asked PZ whether he was doing a debate again this year. He said he wasn’t. I’m not sure how anyone was supposed to know which of PZ’s panels to leave–assuming they were interested.
Because the best place to talk about people who run one blog network is on the hashtag of a conference run by two other networks.
Best I can tell, there were no #braveheroes at that panel. Maybe they were watching fireworks instead?
As for why Greg was on that panel, I suggest people wait for the video before flaunting their ignorance in public.
Fascinating how someone who hasn’t seen the panel knows that no “real discourse” has happened. As for why there were no evolutionary psychologists on the panel, do please let me know if you know of one who wants to take part of their long Independence Day weekend to talk to an F&SF crowd on a panel that is quite critical of the practices of their field. If they’re willing to give up part of their holiday to go through the process of getting a pass to get through a locked-down hotel, I’m sure we can set something up with them for next year. The process takes some work, but it’s doable. Shawn Otto has been exceptionally generous to us in that respect for the last two years in order to talk about climate science.
Yes, Anne Sauer used cocktail demonstrations to talk about the history of patent medicines and “tonics”. Is that a problem?
ElevatorGATE: Trigger warning for truth http://storify.com/ElevatorGATE/conversation-with-saramayhew-and-notungschwert …
More pronouncements (in the Storify) from people who don’t know what’s happening at the conference. Terribly skeptical that.
schrostherapist: Evo-psych: “how can you spot the BS? Panelists: Greg Laden, Stephanie Zvan (mod), Amanda Marcotte, Indre Viskontas, PZ Myers” What, no RW?
No. No Rebecca. That would be because the panel focused on evolutionary psychology as a scientific practice, not as fed to us in the media. As you may remember, the media was the focus of Rebecca’s talk at Skepticon, no matter how turned around Ed Clint got on that fact.
A bit, yeah, in the exaggerated form that certainly doesn’t follow any function. But Connie’s shape doesn’t make her just a fembot. She’s a geek through and through. There’s also ongoing talk about depictions of Connie, because while some people want to see her sexualized, lots of us don’t.
I wouldn’t miss those table banners if they went away, for example.
Oh, “tits-robot”. Silly me. I thought you might be serious for a moment.
See, now this is (yet another reason) why it’s silly to make public pronouncements about events you’re not attending. You take a picture of the mostly undecorated hallway people use to get to party rooms that are second-floor cabanas overlooking a courtyard and pool and assume that’s what the whole thing looks like. Instead of like this or this or this. (Oh, hey, that’s us in the blurry background.)
Um, you also heard that people had walked out. And you thought it was a debate. It wasn’t. It was a panel discussion between three scientists and a journalist who covers the topic and is asked to do debates on it. For the record, given that the 4-1/2-hour registration line still snaked back past the door to our room (which wasn’t even on the same floor as registration), it was incredibly well-attended. There were very few empty seats.
Actually, TAM’s a conference. It also doesn’t have much of a role for atheists as atheists. CONvergence does, even beyond the SkepchickCon programming. Geeks Without God recorded there. There was a panel we didn’t organize about atheist F&SF authors. It’s a very atheist-friendly place.
Weirdly enough, not everyone views alcohol solely as a means to rape. Maybe it’s just you?
This is domestic violence?
The nonexistent walkout you keep insisting happened? Yes, seeing that kind of denialism is a bit disturbing. But no, us wondering how delusional you are is not a sign of being owned.
Science fiction has a racism problem, yes. You might have already known about this if you read Pharyngula, where PZ has been pointing it out and supporting people working to fix the problem.
In the meantime, that means we’d damned well better not leave spreading science and skepticism solely to F&SF cons. Who are you supporting who are doing the work?

Someone seems to have forgotten where he is on the internet.
Us talking about science, skepticism, religion, and internet culture for an hour is exactly like limiting all your sources to fundamentalist creationists. Because reasons.
Okay, this Storify you should probably read.

Actually, it’s a critique of “I can’t really hear what’s going on, but I’m going to assume this is what these people said and make some contrary assertions”, but read it if it floats your boat. Or save it for being able to compare it to the video and transcript when they’re released.

Hey, look. Now it’s the wrong blogging network and the wrong conference. So very lost.

Okay, so I do know why it’s happening, but I’ll still look terribly clever if I act as though I’m being ironic. This is irony, right? Not that Alanis Morrisey shit?”
“I’m sure I left breadcrumbs around here somewhere.”
Uh, okay. Thanks for sharing.
“It’s starting to get dark now.”
What Rebecca was quoted as saying was, “Every time I speak out about the treatment I get, the treatment I get gets worse.” So, to Steve, suggesting that a person should be treated better (in this case, better than being deluged with rape threats and sexist bullshit) is an invitation to hurt them.
Also, gay stereotypes in response to Debbie’s proton joke, because why not.
No tears shed for anyone, though we did agree that Bill Maher was a sexist ass in how he went after Sarah Palin.

Actually, some of them were hilarious, but the reactions of the audience were funnier. It turns out that a lot of people normally associate looking at penis pictures and videos with their own sex lives, so the really uncomfortable-looking penises made plenty of people personally uncomfortable. Joking does tend to relieve the discomfort.
Aw, ElevatorGATE, you’re no longer alone in the woods.

Harassment? Someday I’m sure you’ll learn what consent is all about. Unfortunately, it probably won’t happen until after you learn that Melanie coordinated SkepchickCon this year and, thus, was collecting the pictures used in the penis panel from participants, including PZ. They were already joking about PZ sending a penis pic for the first time in his life well before the panel started.

(Psst. Just a hint: If a blogger tells you they haven’t listened to the audio for a panel but want to see it criticized anyway, you might want to wait to crow about it. You really might not want to promote as a commentary on the panel.)
No, actually, you probably should be paying attention to whether the critiques put forward are valid. Making up reasons that people who have been talking about the problems in evo psych for years are talking about them now isn’t just piss-poor skepticism, it’s also waving a big, red ad hominem flag. That Pinker has enough of a reputation to get away with expounding on what he thought our arguments were without seeing more than a brief summary shouldn’t make you happy to be trying the same thing. Also, if you’re going to whine about the political understanding of the people on that panel, maybe you should know that some of us have already addressed this sort of thing.
